Cold Hands, Warm Heart.

That's what they say, isn't it ? Cold hands, warm heart. Is it true ? As a fact, I'd have to say no.

Anyway, that's a digression and the only reason I mentioned it was because I have cold fingers. It makes typing awkward and leaves me with plenty of 'typo's' to deal with it.

If any of you follow snooker, you'll know who Ronnie O'Sullivan is. For those that don't, he's probably the most gifted snooker player to ever have played on the green baize. A number of years ago, he engaged to the help of Ray Reardon (Another player of mythical status) Maybe it was a 'mentoring' kind of relationship, he certainly didn't need help with honing his skills. You would see Ray, sat in the audience. I would imagine he was there as a 'calming' influence. Ronnie could be unpredictable, when it came to his 'attitude'. Some would say that you never knew who was going to turn up, the genius or the fool. It can sometimes be a fine line, as we know.

The reason I mention this, was because from the moment Ray Reardon appeared on the scene, Ronnie would start every session with a mug of something. He never drank from it. He would just sit there, as the introductions were being made and hold it with both hands. It dawned on me, after seeing this a few times, that the mug was probably full of hot water.

My guess is that he was doing this so that his hands were warm,

right from the start, which has to be a good thing when you're a snooker player. Everything they do on the table is coming from both their posture and more importantly, their hands.

I have no doubt that this little addition was a 'tip' from Ray. How clever and yet so simple. During the year or so that the two were connected, Ronnie displayed a much more clam and collected demeanour, he wasn't as rash in his shot selection, there was more deliberating. He was, if possible, a better player for it.

When I was sixteen, I broke my leg. Three pins and two weeks in the local hospital. One morning the consultant surgeon came for a wander round the ward, checking on his patients. He stopped by my bed and asked if everything was alright. Yes indeed it was, thank you. Although I did point out that the cast was causing some irritation and pain where my foot was hanging out of the end of it. He looked at me and then at my leg and then proceeded to pick up a book, that was on my bedside and place it under the end of the cast, this immediately took away my discomfort. Off he pootled, probably despairing at the 'youth of today'.

In our haste to resolve, what may seem complex issues, we overlook the obvious. Sometimes, the simple solution is the best one. Life can be complicated but it doesn't always have to be.

This all has nothing to do with my intended subject. I had even made some notes on my phone, while earlier waiting in traffic. They'll save for another day, nothing time sensitive.

Let us all have triumphant Tuesday.

As I sit on my computer down in the basement I reflect on the colds hands, and I turn on the small heater at my feet problem solved. cold hand reflect on cold feet. If my feet are cold so will be my hands. So just maybe that mug should be placed on a warming pad on the feet(O: Oh ya it does warm up the heart too because it makes for a much happier environment. But the saying still holds strong

I like your thinking Linda. I will put it to the test later. My little corner of a long room is the furthest point from a radiator and is right next to a draughty door. Normally I wear 'sliders' which have a thick foam sole (Insulation) and thus my feet are usually warm. Tonight, I will try without and see if my fingers get cold, or never warm up.

(O: always a better way

HEY Twack,
Very true I started saying keep it simple to myself a long time ago funny enough that was when I started to see and realise that those that didn't were doing so to obfuscate the truth which was they did not have a clue!.Definitely not the same grip that those who kept it simples did....;

By the way know both these unconditional champions well Reardon from my early teens in his pot black days when he dominated the game! Even then he was a cool customer...Ronnie is way too mercurial by comparison but that is what got him to where he is having Reardon in his corner certainly gave him a different dimension to his game and totally agree improved him and his game....amazing what a mentor can do!!

I concur with it all Rami. There are many areas that demand excellence in the basics, those that are too impatient and jump ahead, usually become unstuck.
I wish Ronnie had kept Ray in his corner longer, although his accolades are vast, I think he could have really dominated. I like that merciless streak that the true greats, in any arena, have.

Totally agree Twack it's the supremacy in their gait and and total dominance in the field they have chosen which as on so many occasions chimes with what we are all attempting to do here!

Great insight in this post Twack. We often overlook simple solutions and instead search for an unrealistic complicated one instead.
I still see Dracula every time I look at Ray Reardon!
And while Ronnie is a great player I still don't think there will ever be a more gifted player than the Hurricane - Alex Higgins. And yes I am biased about my fellow Northern Irishman!

Thank you Dave.
I used to love watching him as well. You knew that if he got in the 'zone' there would be nothing the other player could do, but sit there.

In another life we use to discuss back to the basics....in that life we all knew that no matter what happens or what new contraption someone was all fired up about. if we fall short on the basics we miss what we were in business for....
Just a thought I had while reading your post.
Thanks
TIM.

Basics, fundamentals, they are what the foundation of any good business is made from. Good thoughts Tim.
