Changing to https Sounds Painful

Recently installed a new theme on my personal blog because the theme I’m using right now is not touch-device friendly ... and ... the author of the theme (sadly) is not available thus no updates have been offered since its creation.

Anyway ... the new theme is causing me so much grief to use that I’ve been force to join a forum just to get every day common support. Guess a Thrive theme should have been purchase here too ... bad on me!

While in this forum, I noticed several commenting about the SSL certificate changes that are being made by some webmasters ... AND the difficulties they are experiencing.

Wow... sounds sooo scary (like LOTS of work to our websites comin’ up), However one fella offered the following advice:

So, my question to Carson and Kyle is this ... will this apply to our sites here too?

... AND ...

Will we need to edit each and every image address changing http to read as https ... or ... will that step be automated by then?

Like Kyle and Carson are going to be doing ... offering SSL certificates included in paid for domains ... it appears from this same discussion online that MOST hosting servers (if they want to stay in business) will be including SSL certificate with their hosting services.

Apparently, the massive move to SSL certificates is not simply a money-grabbing conspiracy (as I thought it was), rather to STOP hackers from hijackers WiFi (mobile) connections, causing many security issues worldwide.

Ooooooh . . . THAT’S why Google started ranking SSL certified websites above others. Now I get it!

However, as one forum member stated, if you don’t make money from your website, you may as well wait for the free or “included with hosting” SSL certificates ... which they figure will be rolling out by the end of 2016!

My main concern is . . . <gulp> . . . the work that seems to be coming to EVERY website when changing over to https. YIKES!

UPDATE: There were stories shared in the forum of having to go into the cPanel (which I have access to in my Toronto hosted sites) and enter into each website's database to update all the addresses for all the images from http to https in order that the site would display correctly. Brand new sites apparently will NOT have to go through this.

Great info, thanks.

You're welcome Mike!

Another interesting and informative post Trish. Fingers crossed Kyle & Carson will have ironed out any issues before it goes live....you may just struggle on till then!

That's my hope too Michael ... but then I'm also thinkin' of my workload with the other sites ... YIKES!

Hi Trish, really enjoyed your post. Irv.

Thanks YOU Irv!

uhuuuuu! when I only see the text you posted with the instructions I get crazy! I have seen so many similar texts, lately, the sound easy, but then I never knew what to do because, obviously, I don't have the basic knowledge for messing with html.

Well Heidi, when it comes to that ... I'm sure Caron and Kyle are working on a LOT of issues we are not aware of ... yet. Boy, there is going to be a LOT of work initiating these certificates from what I've read ... but only on the older sites with lots of posts and pages .

We will see - keeping calm!
Have a nice weekend!

Thanks for sharing, Trish.

You're welcome Roger!

I'm looking forward to the transition. Hopefully, it will be more on the painless side.

That's my hope too Hal!

Ugh.

I know eh, Deb.

Hopefully those issues will be automated by the time I have to change all of the websites I have hosted as well as my customer's sites :'( ...oh BOY what a job that would be.

I think MKearns is right, to be honest, it could be quite painless if installed by the right hands and we may not get any issues at all.
Cheers, Tosh :)

Guessing I did not communicate very clearly in my post here.

There were horror stories of having to go into the cPanel (which I have access to in my Toronto hosted sites) and enter into each website database and update the image address from http to https in order that the site would display correctly.

Hi Triblu,
Yes I understand where you are coming from, I had a bad experience with a company I paid for private server service and I had to have CPanel access, it drove me mad, never again and it cost me a monthly fortune.
There are much easier options and to be honest WA suites me at the moment and great value for money.
No problem with your communication at all, I was just trying to reassure you :)
I'm sure Kyle and Carson will make it as smooth and as painless as possible, if you are hosted with WA when its rolled out.
Sit back and enjoy.
Cheers, Tosh :)

Agreed Tosh ... thank you for your reassurance. Being of an analytical nature, I just wanna know ;-)) lol!

Let's see what further definition come from K&C as the rollout progresses Trish!

Yes Michael ... which is why I asked the question that I did directed to Carson and Kyle.

When they roll out SSL, it will be automatic. You don't need to worry about changings URLs to HHTPS.

That is not what the discussion was saying in the forum Tennyson, which is why I wrote this post.

It's not a WA forum, so they won't have the same tools and features that we do. The team at WA always makes sure everything is streamlined and simple when it comes to stuff like this.

Not always. You have to use ftp files to upload a premium theme here at WA. Not everything is easy.

Wooooooh there ... I didn't mean for my post to start an argument here fellas ... just a question to Carson and Kyle ... and sharing what I learned with everyone.

Perhaps this is exactly why Carson and Kyle have had to delay releasing our using the SSL certificates ... because of all the background work that HAS to go into the servers in order to make things work best.
