Improvements that come with 3.9

  1. Image editing
  2. Gallery Management
  3. Audio Playlist
  4. Various other little things

You can now drag and drop images into the post editor.

Remember the last update? We still had to get our images to media before we could use them.

You can now resize in the visual editor, circumventing the Media step again.

We can even preview live in gallery from the visual editor. Remember the place holder box? No need to use it anymore if you do not wish to.

Remastering has been done to the Post Editor and the Theme Browser UX

The WP team has redesigned TinyMCE adding both visual improvements and some functional improvements. A Microsoft Word Document can now be pasted to the editor without using a Copy from Word Button.

You can preview themes before installing them, when they are chosen from WP.Org and searching with more ease/

The Theme Customizer allows for widget management making it easier to see exactly what your website will look like before you save your widget arrangement

Audio and Video Playlists, Image cropping in the visual editor have been added.

All this to make our experience better. Have you noticed any of the improvements? Have you taken advantage of any?

What do you LIKE best about the changes?

If you have not, backup your site and upgrade!

Don't have a good backup program?

Then follow these instructions, and you will have an excellent one!

Will bookmark this for future use when I get to this level.

Great, you should be there soon. Won't take long, you will see! Have a great Easter weekend!

Yay for the media drop. Best part of the update. Agree Terea, but it sure didn't happen today for me. lol.

Once I get through the weekend will blog-share my Friday morning terror and a mell of a hess I found myself in.
Suggest-
Two main points before you upgrade - (I know Chris C, another list :))
1-back up manually (use export in tools) to your download file, send to a backup document file. (Thank you Labman).
2-if you already have UltimateTinyMCE it will autoupdate to advanced. The WP-edit is essentially the same thing. (Thank you Josh).

I love the mad rush to the new stuff and who gets on first and blogs.
We are such a great community. Have you and 6 others to thank for all the heads-up instructions.

Now if I can get my article posted before the weekend, and in time for holiday celebrations. ^_~

Ya got me curious and now you are going to make wait to hear your story. I really think you might consider the backup I suggested with 3.9. It is automated and so very easy to use! You set on auto backup and it just works!

Thanks for the extra suggestion love. Just a bit cautious leaving a plugin with all my written material and site customizations. Still working through the trial and error to find out which plugin(s) put me into duck soup. Once I have all the ingredients will post and PM you a notice? LOL.

Exactly Terea. For the moment just name your pictures after the name of the page or post, you can then at least search for them but it is time consuming.

If you are doing something like resizing it is also useful to note which ones you have done.

Thanks for you help Gary, not only today but the many times your advice has helped! I will definitely keep track as you say, until better comes along - hopefully soon!

Anytime! Maybe we should make the suggestion to Wordpress, I think I will go and do that. It would help if they showed the file sizes too.

I will ask too, the more the better. Where are you going to send it so I can let my friends know to request it too and we can all send it to the same exact email. And now off for a nap, since it is 8:30 am and I have not been to bed yet!

;

I'll find out. I'm off too, mid afternoon here, nice and sunny (for a change) and the beach is 10 minutes away!

Enjoy this sunny day, I know the skies are often grey!

Hi very good, every body ask about the update wordpress 3.9. I just
go back check on my wordpress save. going to write to put in the class
and you bit me to it very good

Well actually Andy beat me, but I did not realize it! You can post your opinions too, that is the beauty of different personalities! Happy Easter Happy, if that is something you celebrate!

You always seem to have a great blog post with all of the important information that I need, just when I realize that I need it...lol
Thanks Tria... You're the best!!
J P

What better comment could I even dream of? Thank you! Maybe you should be sending me notes on what to post, I would hate to break that streak! Happy Easter J P!!

With all the changes taking place, now is the time for backup. Thanks Tria!

Ade

For sure! If you do not have something easy in place, I have a really easy one to work with. You are welcome to it.

That's on my to-do list for today.

Great reminder Ade! That's high on my list for today!

Sounds interesting. I know I mentioned on Andy's thread that I wasn't over keen on the endless updates but I guess this will be useful to some. I have spent so much time now using the text editor and HTML that I don't think it is going to make a lot of difference to me personally.

I tend not to put a lot of pictures in my product reviews in between the text anyway, usually just breaking up the text with a full width video or two and using a bullet point feature list near the top below a picture gallery.

It sounds is if it will make life a lot easier for some people though. I do wonder if it is necessarily a good thing for us - the easier it gets, the more competition we are likely to have!

Leave it to you to make me think! Did it cross my mind about competition, upppsss nope. You are right though.
Plus it is unfair to those of us who have put so much time in on the war front. Boy will we have stories to tell our ..... who knows, at least we will have stories. Happy Easter Gary!

The main issue I have with images hasn't been addressed, and that is searching for them. If you only have a few it won't matter but if you have a large site and hundreds of images then you have to search for them by name, and if you haven't named them appropriately you're in real trouble!

Not only that, if you need to upload a new or similar image but of a smaller size there is little to identify which is the original and which is the new one. File size isn't shown, if you could reorder by file size you could easily tell which photos need resizing or replacing with smaller ones to help page load times for example.

Last but not least whinge, if you are creating an image gallery by using a shortcode you have to scroll over every individual image to get it's ID number. Same with pages and posts; all have their own unique ID number but you don't know what it is unless you scroll over it then it's displayed in the bottom left hand corner of your browser.

E.G. go into Media, run the mouse over the image or name from the list and the bottom corner of the screen will show something like this:

mywebsite/wp-admin/post.php?post=4321....

4321 would be the image (or post or page) number but as far as I know this is the ONLY way to find it, unless of course somebody knows differently. The only thing you can do to make it easier later is to add the file number to every photo but of course you can't do that until after you have uploaded it, because it won't have a number until you do, so you then have to edit every single one.

I know this doesn't sound like a big deal to most people but if you have to find, resize and replace a lot of images it is.

OK I'm done.

Actually I understand, with 3 different webpages and for getting names it is really a hassle to try and find the one I want. And there is that sizing thing. I guess I just got used to trying the one I found first.
You pose a quite valid complaint! Maybe in the next update. I wonder what really large websites do, they may have a file with each photo classified, so they can keep up. I actually do that sometimes, on the ones I tend to forget the names easily on. Notebook full of paper!

Yes that's my concern, what happens when the site is much bigger. I already have 700 photos and I intend the site to be ten times the size it is now. It's not really difficult to organise initially, just name photos after the product or post you will be adding them to, so if you have a post called "Acme review", just name the photos "Acme 01, Acme 02" and so on.

But to find them later you need to search for that file name, there's no A-Z list as WP lists them in order of most recently added. That's ideal if you add a new post and want to add new photos to it. The problem is there is no other way of sorting the list. It's searching for them later that is time consuming, such as for finding the numbers. I don't understand why they don't show the file numbers.

I use a spreadsheet and just mark what I have done with a column for each item, e.g. I list each item and mark them when I have done a review, added photos, added links, added price comparison charts for example, so I know what has been done and what hasn't. I could add the file number of each photo used but you would end up spending more time on the spreadsheet and not on the website.

I looked at my sites, I have notes about the days I have added things and I realize how important that is now because it gives me an idea of where the pic might me. But you are right, I was looking for a way, just days ago to sort them differently and could not find one. I spent a good half hour looking for one particular picture, mostly because it was over sized, making it difficult to see, among other photos of what seemed like a million dogs. It did cross my mind that I was sure I never wanted to have to redo all those pictures and that this particular time was an exception. How in the world do we keep growing our site and keep track? There has got to be a better way!
Sure hope they incorporate it into the next upgrade!

Ok Onto to it now thankyou

Hope it makes things easier for you!
Happy Easter, may your day be full of joy!

Really thank you. I will backup my website later and upgrade it. I will send you a feedback of course.

Thanks, you know I will appreciate it!

the thing about the word paste and insert process for me was "if they can do it in there why not make "in there" into "out there all the time" which they have done- that was responsible for so much hair-tearing out for me in my early days...LOL not.
The closeness of what we are drafting to what we see is coming closer and closer and that is the best thing, IMO. It allows visual modality people much more feedback. It also allows us to become better on-page designers as we can kind of "feel" what looks better.

Andy

wysiwyg is not wyg on WP. Has driven me crazy from the beginning! Thanks for your comments, you know I always enjoy them

nope, just getting closer...patience is a virtue, but not one I always make time for!
