i am trying to get my recent post to show up my home page i am stuck
The home page by default is usually the most recent blog post, but it can be set as a static page. To check go to appearance settings reading then at the top you have two options a static page is one page which you set which will always be your home page or your latest post. Most recent post will always be the last published post .

If it's just the recent post and nothing more -
In Settings > Reading set your front page to display your blog and set the posts to 1 >> That should do it
