Why You Deserve to Succeed

I was just reading Darlene's post - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/darlenejones/blog/i-feel-the-need - and my reaction was to share with a lesson I have just finished teaching to my 10th grade class. I figured I'd post it here so you can all enjoy it!

Aaron Fothingerham

I showed them a closeup shot of Aaron Fothingerham, 21 years old, (google him) and then asked them what their initial judgement of him is... (cool guy, strong, etc...) I then told them that he was a finalist in the Vegas AmJam competitions at age 14, had won a Guinness World Record at 16 years, and has been touring all over the world with the Nitro Circus.

After we discussed this for a few minutes, I showed them this videoclip: http://www.aish.com/sp/pg/Blessed.html Needless to say, my students were all shocked!

Your Personal Exercise

I then handed them each a nice piece of scrapbook paper and had them write about their own qualities and why they deserve the best life they could have! I know that a common activity is to have students write positive character traits of their peers but they are so not used to self-praise. A couple of the sweetest students in the class - whom all the girls in school respect - said they didn't know what to write... But this was not optional. I gave them time to think about it and they all covered their papers and began writing. When they were done, I suggested that they place their papers in a prominent place where they (but no one else :) will see and read it at least once a day. I think that this is one of the best exercises I have given them.

Without our acknowledging our positive aspects, there is no way we will believe that we are deserving of success!

May I suggest that each of you reading this take the time to do this exact exercise right now... Do not push it off! It's important for you to acknowledge your strengths and then to use them to not only help you succeed but to come to the realization that YOU DESERVE TO SUCCEED!

WOW you got to give it to that young man, succeed at any cost, real gusty.
Thanks for sharing your blog Shephanie, the concept is great, young people need to feel good about themselves.

Indeed! My pleasure, I hope this will positively effect those who see it...

Well done Stephanie - something I gleaned from the video, from Aaron, was that often when we begin any project, we start by putting limits on ourselves. Breaking free from these self imposed limits is a challenge we must all face to reach our full potential. An awareness of this is a good place to start! You're going to turn out some great kids from your class. Good on you! :) george

Thank you for the kind words! I sure hope so :-)
In fact, I'm thinking of starting a website with different lessons, workshop ideas, group discussions, like this one, that others can use... Any thoughts on this?

I like the concept because that removes self-doubt. Thank you.

I sure hope it's effective! But, yes, I agree, it's a great exercise :)

A great idea. Thank you.

:-)

Nice video. I'll try to give thanks for my blessings.
Remember though, if you can do a thing about some aspect of yourself/life that you dislike, then do it! Some people 'freeze' and let their potential pass them by because they want to be 'contended' or 'not too greedy'. There is a difference between depressing yourself regarding things that you cannot change at all (or for the time being) and just ignoring what you can be and taking action on being the best you.

I agree with you 100% !!

Excellent food for thought and reflection! Thanks.

Pat

My pleasure :)

Very few of us give our selves enough credit and feel we deserve the best. I will do the exercise and keep it on a board next to my desk. Thank you for sharing. Debbie

Yay! Good for you :-) Thanks for sharing this with me!

Very nice exercise. I think everyone could benefit from this experience. Thanks!

:-)

What an awesome post~and video! WOW! That kid rocks! And I thought skateboard work was scary stuff...when you take it to new heights and angles, well! Nothing is going to stop you.

I'll share this one with my daughter, she needs the message :)

Thanks!

Happy that you took the few minutes to watch! I know, totally incredible!
We are a really, really small girls only high school (total of 18 girls in 3 grades - we don't have a 12th grade yet) and we are unfortunately dealing with an epidemic of low self esteem. I hope that this will be the first step to bringing that up!
Glad you'll be passing this on to your daughter :-)

Great post and a great message,
Hudson

Thank you! I hope you took the few minutes to watch the clip...
