People don’t seem to have a problem talking, so why do we have such a problem with writing? Are we afraid to put our thoughts on paper? Afraid people will not like it or disagree with it?
Have you ever read a post or blog that looked like it was written by a Philadelphia lawyer? Full of big words that even they, probably didn’t understand. Long, boring sentences and paragraphs that stream off into the wild blue yonder.
If you want to reach the average reader, you must write for the average reader. Your blog or post should contain small, easy to understand words. Sentences should flow like a comfortable, bubbling brook. Your writing should be written for the reader, not for you.
Write with conviction. Write with authority. Know what you’re talking about. Use the product or service you are trying to sell. Many years ago, I was a pilot and an airplane mechanic. One of the requirements was that when we worked on a plane, we had to test fly it.
Not, that’s different than an automobile mechanic. If the car breaks down on the test drive, pull over to the side of the road and call the wrecker to pick you up. In the airplane, you can’t pull over on the side of the road!
In writing, you must believe in yourself…have confidence in what you are saying. To have that confidence, you must have the experience or the training to be an authority. Again, don’t try to be something you are not!
Shakespeare said it well in Hamlet:
“This above all: to thine own self be true
And it must follow, as the night the day
Thou canst not then be false to any man/Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!”
I wrote a post that involved me having to reword a few words so an audience can have an easier time reading it.
I do sometimes get carried away with some of my posts.
But yea this just shows that in order to get the best out of your content. You have to take a step back and sometimes reword it to make sense to everyone.
