Hi Lebman I followed you video training thank you however there is one question i would like to ask what is the reason for creating a page or a post using your url address for that page i have always wondered about this because you can create you menu pages or posts without nominating a url is there a reason for this ....Liz

That is demonstrating a custom link. You can also use this to create a "Home" link in the menu.

I followed training on another video, but when editing a menu which I had submenus, the very top one will not change to submenu, can anyone help please? Thank you!
Reply
rusik77 Premium
Could you be more specific? What have you done? And what do you mean “the top one will not change to submenu”? Screenshots could help you as well
Reply
Labman Premium
Go to your menu editor, select the menu you wish to adjust.
Drag the submenus to the right of the main link above it and it will show as a submenu

If you want a top menu item that is not clickable, Create a custom link with the # as the link and whatever text you need for the menu item. Then place the submenu items below the custom link and indent them to the right. In the video, I call this a dead menu item.

I have done what you have explained in the video. What I observed was that when I created subitem and selected that menu display as "top menu", the subitem is not displayed under the main item (showing separately). It is displayed under main item only when I select the menu display to be "main menu". I have saved changes to the manage locations also. Still, I could see the same I explained above. Hope you understood what is my problem. Please resolve it for me if you find any solution.
Reply
Labman Premium
It sounds like that is working as designed. You don't see submenus until you click on the top menu item.
Reply
No. You did not get it sir. When I create a menu and set its structure, I need to select the "display location" of it, which are given as checkboxes at the bottom of the menu structure. They are topmenu, main menu and bottom menu. Top menu checking will display our menu on the top of the page, main menu selection displays our menu item in the middle and bottom one will get displayed at the bottom of the page.
Now, my problem is that when I check my current menu as the "top menu" and use the currently created menu as a menu to be displayed on the top of my page, the subitem is not getting listed under the main item instead is shown separately. But, when I check my current menu as "main menu", the subitem is listed under main item and is shown in the middle of the page.
My problem is why is the subitem not getting listed under the main item when the menu is made to display on the top of the page?
Hope I am clear about my question?

It sounds like your theme hasn't been updated recently and is giving you issues.

Change to the Twenty Seventeen theme and see if the problem persists.

I have a question I want to put one of my pages in the footer how can I do that?
Reply
Triblu Premium
Hey Jayaira,

You can create a footer menu. Here's a video tutorial to help you: https://youtu.be/LR66XANOs2o

Hope this helps you.

Perhaps some WA training would be useful

Although, I did briefly touch on how to create a footer menu. You probably want to create a footer widget with a menu as Jim-Bo does in this one. Some themes will support a separate footer menu so check to see if that is available with your theme. If not, use a footer widget with a menu in it.

Great video. The only problem I'm having is my site opens up to nothing. I can't figure out how to get it to open on my first page.
I have no home page but thought the site would automatically open to the first page. Every page on the menu has something on it but it opens to "nothing found" Any help would be appreciated.
Reply
Labman Premium
You need to create a custom link, name it home and enter the main URL for your site. Starts at minute 3:45 in the video.

What is the purpose of the dead mans post
Reply
Labman Premium
A dead link will allow you to have a top category and below have posts from the category in a list. The ones below open to a post, the top one doesn't respond if you click on it.

Thanks. That helped me out.

Thanks, Labman. Great video. Can I change my existing menus, to "dead menu links" where I already have sub-menus below it? Will it matter if the sub-menus have the page attributes set as the parent being the menu that I want to change to a "dead menu link"? The current URL's for the sub-menus, do have the parent menu name included in it. Will any of that change? Thanks for your help.
Reply
Labman Premium
The Dead menu link will just become a header. The original page will still exist, it just won't be on the menu any longer.
