Can I create a link from a title of the widget?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yep there are two ways you can do that.

You can use a plugin like Widget Title links - here's the link to get that plugin. https://wordpress.org/plugins/widget-title-links/

Or you can do it by adding some PHP code to your site. I prefer this method simply because when I can I avoid using plugins.

But if coding is not your thing, use the widget.

Hope this helps

Andrew007 Premium
Yes, it did! Thanks a lot. I used the code.

Hi Leo....can you tell me what I can do with this situation...I had the aStore in a drop down menu and it all appeared good. As soon as I put it in as a main page, the Recent Post column got in the way, so I shifted the Amazon Side Bar Menu to the right and this happened.
Reply
Labman Premium
You should make your astore without a sidebar. Your theme should have a full sized template to use in this case. You can also add the display widgets plugin to suppress the sidebar widget on this page although it won't remove the sidebar itself it will hide the recent post widget.

Just a note: astores typically convert quite poorly. Why shop on your site when they can just go to amazon?

Leo, help please... in your example you have a set on the side that says April, May June etc. I am assuming that you are putting the post from that month under that particular header. Is that a menu? a widget? a category? I cannot figure out how to put my pages there. For instance... I want to organize my pages there by putting them under the proper heading like Product review or Recipes but I cannot figure out which one is which and how to add a page to it. Color me confused!
Reply
DianneBee Premium
Hi Stormie. The widget "Recent Stuff" can be labeled "Archives" or whatever you like. It will list previously published posts, which can be organized by Category when you publish the post. A Page is different. A page labeled "Recipes" could be some text and links to all your posts which are recipes. I hope that helps!
Reply
eileen2 Premium
How can I show a list of my articles in the side bar
Reply
kiliwia62 Premium
When you go to your dashboard and click on post, there you also can see besides all post, add new post, Categories.
there you can create a new category where you personal think your post will fit the best.

It also depends on the layout of a theme where you can find or put your categories.
Go to Appearance, widget, some have two options to put category into the footer, or and into the sidebar.
You can check out my website www.weightlossforwomenwithpremenopause.com

Hope this helps a bit

Hi Leo, thank you for the tutorial on widgets. Very insightful. I added a Contact Form plugin and activated it. "contact Form "with that gear symbol next to it now appears on my admin menu at the bottom under Settings (just like the Newsletter appearing in your video). How do I get it to appear in my Widgets so that I can add it to my Contact Us page?
Reply

If you want the contact form on your contact page you need to put the short code from your contact Form Plugin on that page, it has nothing to do with your widgets.

The widgets are handled the same way. Leo just has his widgets in the right sidebar on his layout. Your layout has them in the left sidebar.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Your sidebar placement is theme dependent. It was designed to have the sidebar on the left.

Unless your theme provides you the option of changing its position - you would need to use a different theme that has a sidebar on the right or a theme that allows different layouts, for example

Sidebar - content - sidebar
Content - sidebar

KarenDemers Premium
Thanks....I was afraid of that. :(

Could you please take a look at my website and tell me how I can straighten it up? I would be so appreciative. I feel overwhelmed and like my website is a mess!! As I said, your tutorials are very easy to understand and I can follow along with them. Here is my website: www.wendysessentialoils.com. Thank you so much, Leo!! Leo I'm still fuzzy on the positions marker in the widgets area. I had more ads posted in the widgets area and some of them are no longer showing. I thought Positions 1,2,3, etc were for the different categories like "Search" and Prevous Posts and archived and all that. Did I miss something again?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Positions are the order in which all your widgets are placed.

So you could have a search widget in the first position, a text widget in the second and previous post widget in the third position.

When you add a new widget it will ask you where you want to place it - you will notice it will add another option so if you currently have 3 widgets you will see an option for #4.

Of course you can choice whatever number you want any widget to be placed.
Reply
MartinWeeks Premium
That part I understand...to me it's like a catagory/file system. Archives go in a specific number order and so on. I'm talking about when I enter the href code for banner ads in for instance text. I've through trial and error figured out sort of how to line up the banner ads (see website for side by side ads.) What I'm sayihng is I think a couple of ads just ran out of space? Maybe I erased them unintentionally but is there an actual physical space for the code before it simply runs off the section?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Ok, the widget area only has so much room (width), and that is determined by the theme you are using.

If you can change the width of your side bar then you give your widget that much more width as well. If not then you need to get into the CSS and make your changes there.

As for height you can really go a tall as you want, so ads on top of each other.

I hope this is the answer you were looking for?
Reply
MartinWeeks Premium
Helps immensely. However, now I need to find tutorials on CSS as I'm not sure exactly what that is and how it relates. Thanks again Leo, you are a prince among entrepreneurs

Marty.
Reply
leoemery Premium
I forgot to mention once you increase the sidebar width - you'll probably have to change the content area width to be smaller to accommodate for the larger sidebar.

Then you need to increase the size of the widget area to fit the size of the larger sidebar.

Sweet! I have been reading material for Google AdSense. I am waiting to be approved but have added a first link. Any way you can do a video on what exactly AdSense is and how to use it? It says they provide the content and I can not choose the ads I want. Where would I go for those?
Thanks in advance.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Sure pick the one thing I cannot make a video about - LOL - Sorry I don't use adsence.

And I don't know of anyone that has created any training or information about it here in the WA.

And yes it's true the ads that end up getting displayed on your site are their choosing. Here is a link that explains how the ads are chosen for your site:

https://support.google.com/adsense/answer/9713

Once you are approved you will have access to your adsence account. It's pretty simply from there.

You simple add the adsence code on your site where you want the ads to appear. When people click on the ads you get paid.
Reply
JJMac Premium
May I ask what you use for ads or do you not use them?
Reply
leoemery Premium
I don't use ads of any kind - my sites promote one thing - and any marketing is pointed towards that product.

Leo, thanks for your videos, they are clear and well done. My problem is, I'm on Course 2, following Kyle who uses Omega as his theme. Omega seems to be a bare bones with a lack of Widgets (Footer and Side bar... who knows what else).
I know you can customize Omega (or any theme) I just haven't attempted that yet, because I really don't know what I'm doing, or what I want to do. I'm hoping everything becomes clearer as I continue going through the lessons.
Reply
leoemery Premium
As you progress you're correct things will become more clear - also you can change the theme at anytime.
Reply
BrooklynPhil Premium
I'm going to wait a little bit, because to be honest with you, I'm afraid I'm going to muck something up. Now, back to my lessons. ;^)
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yeah that's a good idea - build a solid foundation and understanding then you can play with the design and look of your site when ever you like.

A website does not have to be a design master piece to be very, very successful - look at Kyle's sites - basic and they delivery what the visitors wants and are very successful.

Just figured out it was the ad blocker on my chrome causing all the fuss. Now can I add additional banners in the same side bar location? without having to replace the one that there? Sorry to be such a bother but time is running out for me as far as the upgrading is concerned. Just don't have the bucks to do it whether it's $19.00 or $47.00. So I need to find the answers as quickly as possible so I can move forward on content and SEO. I'm not showing up anywhere in Google right now unless I personally send my url to people. That's not going to work obviously. Thanks and again sorry to be such a "p.i.t.a."
Reply
leoemery Premium
Yes you can - simply add more widgets - but don't add to many you don't want your blog to look like a billboard - over advertising will just drive people away from your site.

Depending on which affiliate program you have sign up for will depend on where they have the banner codes - most affiliate programs have an affiliate login area.

As for here in the WA you'll find the banner codes under the WA Affiliate Program link to the left and once on that page the link for the banners is at the top right.

If you're talking about those widgets mentioned in the video tutorial, then you might need a theme that supports that function of having certain things pop up only in certain posts/pages. If there's a way around to do it with your own coding, then I have no idea.
Reply
AdamsOnLine Premium
Any text widget. I can put a single widget on a page but not on a post.

Widgets cannot be placed on specific page or post - a widget is part of your wordpress theme and will be show in the side bar of your theme at all times - however you can with most themes remove the side bar so none of your widgets show.

Always wondered about widgets Leo. I could never quite get how people have a theme set up and looking the way it does. Especially when I just see my "bare" theme. Very helpful. Thank you.

Themes & Widgets, WOW! That was fraking awesome. Being new to WA, that was really helpful, because I was doing lesson 5 "Setting up your website" just today.
Thanks Leo, can't wait for the next video. LIAM

Brilliant, thank you Leo. This is exactly the sort of thing I need to get into for building my 'authority' site.

Thanks again. Since the day I got here I have been kicking myself for hiring a (quite expensive) local website designer to rebuild my website because I didn't understand WP.

Given another couple of weeks I could have done it myself and saved myself a lot of money!
