Ok this is the third video in this 3 part video series about the Appearance area in your WordPress dashboard which is Themes, Widgets and Menus.

This video is about Menus

Here are the links to the 2 previous appearance tutorials:

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/wordpress-dashboard-tutorial-themes

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/wordpress-dashboard-tutorial-widgets

Hope you enjoyed these videos - I have more tutorials about the dashboard to come.

Also as I think of it here is a link to a video that Nathaniel did about Custom menus. This video shows you how to create a custom menu if your theme does not support one. - great video.

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/customize-wordpress-menus-in-themes-that-don-t-support-custom-menus

And of course if you have questions fire away.

I believe in you!

Great video but WA Menu page now includes a Menu Settings section ( a newer version I'm sure). It took me a minute but I finally figured it out. Thanks for the tutorial!
Reply

You're welcome, but I'm not sure what you mean when you say the WA Menu - this is for wordpress and the menu area and setting options have not changed.
Reply
BMorr50 Premium
I logged into my website through WA to do the exact same steps you demonstratedid in your tutorial. Make sense if you were working from WordPress and I was working from WA.
Reply

I guess I should elaborate a lil more... the video didn't display, nor did you mention selecting the option to auto display page, or choose primary or secondary display. I didn't recall seeing these options in the tutorial. I apologize if I missed you going over this step.
Reply

Makes no difference how you log into your site - your site is a wordpress site, with a wordpress theme - the WA is just your host.

I am looking for a solution to improve the way my menu looks on mobile.
It's fine on desktop with the drop downs but on mobile its very confusing. There are too many options and it doesn't read well/ doesn't look visible. Its a bar that opens up and you have to scroll through the menus.
I would like to change this and make it simpler. Either a new menu entirely or I'm thinking of hiding the majority of my menu.
Thanks.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Your mobile view is theme related - you do ahve the option of using a wordpress plugin such as WP mobile and you can then set up your mobile view the way you would like
Reply
WealthyAsFCK Premium
I just looked at WP mobile as we speak.
I am using Songwriter currently. I think everything else looks fine on mobile.
What other options are there for configuring the menu without installing a plugin? I'm thinking because of load times.
Thank you.

Other than a plugin it's all theme dependent

I watched your video o menu creation a number of times. It's not the same version of WP as I am using, and I still cannot simply put my tabs at the top.

Any other ideas?
Reply
leoemery Premium
WP is the same, the tabs are created within the menu area as shown in the video - it depends on your theme not WP - most if not all themes have a top menu -
Reply
teddae Premium
I can only get it to place 1 tab... says its "Primary" and any other selections do not show after I've tried to add them to the top left menu tab area.

Is it easy to change to another template? If so, what is the easiest or recommended steps?
Reply
leoemery Premium
Primary is the main menu - to add other tabs to your menu you need to first select pages or post from the left where it lists your current pages and posts. And yes it's easy to change themes
Reply
Labman Premium
Some themes have a place to select the location of the menu. Look at the top of the menu page and see if there is a tab that says Manage Locations.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Thanks Craig, maybe I should do a basic training video about the whole menu area - what do you think?

Or you could send them to the one I did.

Isnt it possible to add individual posts to pages??
Thee post shows up in the drop down but there is nothing when you click on the actual page on the menu. Really confused could you please help me with it.
http://letusexploremusic.siterubix.com/learn-songs

What do i do for the post to show up in the page? as i would be adding more songs later.
Reply
TinyTot Premium
I had trouble with this too. The only way I was able to get it to work that way was to add categories to each page. For Example, Page -Recipes. Categories - On The Go Meals, Baby Food and Slow Cooker Meals. When I wrote a post, I selected the category I wanted for it. The categories were listed under the pages when you hover your mouse over them. Kind of like Sub Pages.
I still don't know the use of a page because nothing shows up on it.
Hope you get some answers.
Reply
MHainsworth Premium
If you made the page specifically as a heading (used the # under custom url setting) then you won't be able to click on it. These are designed to add posts manually in the menu section and to act as a drop down menu.

If for the Learn Guitar Chords you just used an ordinary blank page then you can write on this and put links to posts in the text, or you can write on it and also have posts attached (using the drop menu). But the posts won't be in the page they are still separate.

So I was on someone's question about adding a secondary menu and someone put a link to this training which is how I ended up here. When I first added the pages to my site, I did not add a dropdown menu to one of my pages. Later I decided I needed one. The dropdown menu works great! However, if I add anything to one of the dropdown pages, it does not show up or shows up on all the pages. So what did I do wrong? If you can help me figure this out that would be great! I need to add more content but can't right now because of what is happening.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Not sure what you mean when you say when you add anything to your dropdown page. A page itself cannot be a drop down nor can a page appear on all pages, each page is separate, however like in the video a page can be part of the drop down menu.

So are you referring to a page that you are adding additional content too that is in the dropdown menu? - What is your URL so I can see.

Just a heads up I will be in and out of the WA for several days, so it may take time for me to get back to you again.

Go to menus and see which locations are standard in your theme.
Then design the menus you want via custom menu function. Name them. Save them.
The customise>menus> menu locations

Failing that aďd a custom menu widget or plugin

hmm i still don't get it. i have two burning questions i cant find the answer to, 1. how do i rearrange my pages appearance for example rearrange what pages are next to each other. 2. how do i associate a certain post with a certain page?
Reply
cspreiter Premium
1. To change the order of the pages on the menu, go to "Appearance", "Menus". Make sure to select the correct menu that you want to change (I've done that before, changing one menu when I meant to change another). The list on the left side of the screen is the order in which the pages will appear so you can just drag and drop them to change the order. If you click and drag a page beneath and to the right of another page, it will become a submenu. Lastly, make sure to save the menu after you have it the way you want it.

2. Not exactly sure what you are wanting here. If you want content from a post on a page, then I'd just put whatever content that you want on that page. You could also create links to posts that are related to whatever it is you have on a particular page. Sorry, I know that's not very helpful. If you can describe a little more what you are wanting to do, I might be able to help some more.

You see folks i see him as CHARLIE BEHIND THE ANGELS!
Reply
leoemery Premium
Places like Amazon, adsence and any other affiliate will provide you the code.

You can copy and paste using your mouse - or you can use your keyboard short cuts to copy and paste.

If you're not sure how to copy and paste - go to You Tube and do a search for "how to copy and paste" there are a ton of videos showing how to do so with your mouse and by using keyboard short cuts.
Reply
kilan Premium
no prob at all withcopy and pasting, itt is how to find thecode and where; i went in to two products i liked on Amazon and I couldnt see the code. Charlie!
Reply
leoemery Premium
Go into your amazon associate account - now type in the keyword or ASIN/ISBN - when the results come back - to the right of the product click Get Link - not the little arrow but the text Get Link.

This will bring you to a page where you can get all your links and code for them

I did a training video showing how to create an Amazon text link - this is the same area that you get all your different links for Amazon. As for other affiliates each place is different as how and where you find your affiliate link and or product code.

I can't do the menus because I can't seem to incorporate PAGES into my menu...all that shows up are the segments of my first page, which are titled, and so are the pages, but my issue isn't addressed. I'm not understanding how to work it out. Also who knows how to get rid of unwanted POP UP icons next to the headings on two of my three titled posts (from the main page). I was trying to learn through just clicking around, but now I have these icons and can't get rid of them and nobody even knows what I'm talking about...I have been reaching out for two days now....Also does "view profile" get anyone on to my actual page so they can see what my issues are?

Your website is set to Blog Roll. That means your latest Blog/Post will appear as the top article.
The other type is called a Static Page. The Home Page image and article STAYS THE SAME FOREVER...unless, of course, you change the image and article.
So do you want the same information everytime we open your website?
Or do you want the lastest Blog/Post to be seen first thing when we open the website?

You only have 2 Pages, the Research one and the Best Diet.
You have 3 Blogs. If you go to Posts, you should see 3 total. Those are the 3 on your Home Page. Make sense?
Also, I don't see and 36 or 14 as stated in another Comment.
Are you set for now?
Looks good...the icons are gone and we got the Blog Roll done.

The Home Page is a page (isn't it?) and now I see they have all shown up...but as I just wrote to you, I have numbers in place of the two iconed titles I erased, and I don't know how to get rid of them, as they (the numbers) are not on the edit page....so I'm still in trouble.

Also the "best diet" page was supposed to be a blog post, or at least it was originally and to me it still looks that way....So that one plus the "Why" post and the "Research shows" one are the 3 blog posts. The new PAGE (4 research abstracts) is there too as a separate page, but everything still looks screwed up in the edit page.

Again I'm sorry I'm so dense. Please forgive me.

I just looked at your site. Where are the numbers? You lost me. Right now, I see the 2 Pages plus your Home Page. I see 3 Blogs/Posts.
Let's try this...state exactly what you want done...be really specific. Leave your url, again. Perhaps others will chime in. We'll get this!

We fixed the numbers...they are gone! I promise! No, I won't let you quit. You fixed the issues. I will wait for your reply in my PM.
Breathe! We got this!

Leo,

Thank you so much for this tutorial! Kyle referred me to this lesson because I was battling with a theme that has only one menu and I could not figure out how to do the sub menus I wanted. This information is a God-send for me!

Now I wanna see all your lessons! :-)

Hey there Leo. I'm having trouble about the difference between a blog and a website? I've been working in this industry for many years, and always thought they were two separate entities? However I'm confused about Kyles answer to my issue. I interpreted his answer to mean that one is the same as the other! However, over the years I've had both...some separate and some linking to each other. But, What Kyle said (at least my interpretation) is that a blog is part of a website and vise verse. I do intend to link both together her in WA. I've already started on my Blog. But I don't believe that they are the same and that one must have the other. Can you please shed some light on this for me? Thanks. Sharon

The only difference between a static website and a blog is that the blog has a blogroll. Typically, a website doesn't change. Google likes to see fresh content and that is done easily by adding additional content to the blogroll.

Fresh content=higher rankings and more opportunities to have additional keywords that bring in traffic.
Reply
leoemery Premium
The real difference between the 2 is the way the information is presented.

With a traditional website the information is static and rarely updated and there is no real interaction with visitors.

With a blog content is published in reverse chronological order, with the most recent post published first – followed by older posts. And there is the ability to interact with your visitors through commenting.

And Kyle is correct in his explanation. With wordpress being the most popular platform for creating sites - they are websites with blogs integrated into them.

Hope this clears things up

I don't understand that either. In fact now I understand the difference between posts and pages but can't make my pages visible and at one point I was having trouble tweaking my posts and someone in the know referred to the posts as blog posts, so I for sure still don't know.

Leo, why would you make a custom link (linking to your affiliate program) to be added to the menu and doing so, you'll send people away from your page?
Reply
leoemery Premium
You don't have to send people away totally you can always have the link open up into a new browser window. The choice is your yours.

However there is a button to activate opening the link into a new browser window just below the navigational label field.
Reply
PabloMolina Premium
Leo is right; you should make it to open in a new window or tab; so you prevent the visitor from loosing your page, and also provide a way to visit the affiliate page...
Reply
MarciaAff Premium
Oh, I didn't know that, Leo. You didn't show it on the video. I wonder if the other newbies will just follow what you suggested on the video and lose their visitor... hopefully not.
Reply
leoemery Premium
People have just as much success using a link that opens in a new browser or not - myself included. It's all a personal choice.

But with that said as you pointed out I could have shown the optin of doing so - my bad

Just wanted to give you a shout out and mention how helpful the video has been to so many people. Very well done. Even though the WordPress admin area has changed slightly, the custom menu's area is nearly identical.

A thorough, easy to follow video tutorial!

Leo, I viewed your Video, but my problem is, I want my menu to be a Header Menu, I updated a few days ago, now it's a default Menu. How do I get it back as a Header Menu? Thank you.
Reply
tommydillard Premium
The best way to find this out is to Google your theme and look in there if there is a way to do it with the new update on your theme. All themes have different set ups so it is hard to figure out what your prob is with know which one you are using.
Reply
leoemery Premium
Without knowing what theme chances are you need to set the location of your menu. Go into Appearance - then Menu - you should have a Manage Locations tab on your menu page - click that - this is where you set the location of your menus

Not sure what you mean where your post go to which page. A Post and page are completely different things.

I don't have a training video about this- but I did do a post explaining the difference between a page an a post.

I hope this helps:

Ok, I think I need some help here. When I go to my dashboard and click appearance; at the top of the page I see themes-add new. On the video it shows manage themes and install themes. I am missing something because when I click on a theme I like I am only able to install it, not upload so am unable to locate the play around part and wind up changing my theme on website. Does this make sense? Help!
Reply
Labman Premium
WordPress has been updated since this video was released so the interface looks a bit different.
Go to Appearance>>Themes then add new. To Upload a theme you need to store the zip file for the theme on your computer then upload from the computer storage location.

If you scroll down past the feature filter box, you will see a box that says find themes, checking some filter boxes will focus on the themes with those features. Leave them unchecked and you will see all of the available options.

Hope this helps.
Reply
theholygrail Premium
It is difficult to communicate this problem. On the dashboard I click appearance>Themes>then add new. At the top of the screen is Install themes
search\upload\Featured\newest\recently updated. Now if I click on upload it asks me to store it in a file but I have not selected a theme yet. If I click (featured etc.) It will let me preview or install and does not give me the option to upload. Please advise if you can.
Also where would I store an uploaded file if I had to?
Reply
Labman Premium
Scroll down on the add new page and find the "Find Themes" box. Click this and choose a theme.
Reply
theholygrail Premium
I am not having trouble choosing a theme. It the uploading part I don't understand. When I click on a theme I can only preview it or install it. If I click on upload it asks me to store it in a file but I have not selected a theme yet.

You should be able to customize your menu on your menu , go to appearance and then widget area ..Hope that helps ...

It depends if your theme supports a second menu. You can find out by going into Appearance - then Menu.

If your theme supports more then one menu you will see where you can add a additional menu at the top of the menu page - depending on your theme you will see something like this: http://d.pr/i/4Mnf

Hope that helps
