Wordpress Clinic - Using widgets Effectively

Hello to you all, this is another training from me, I have decided to change the name of theses training tutorials from, HTML for beginners to Wordpress Clinic, because the mere mention of HTML seems to scare people off and I will be continuing to teach HTML but only in the context that you need to understand in-order to use WordPress more effectively

I have been here for six months now and it has come to my attention that a lot of people struggle with Wordpress and I know you all want to make your sites as good and as effective as possible, so I will be doing these WordPress clinics now to show you all about using WordPress and I will be mixing in some HTML training with it, so as to give you all the best possible training I can

So in this tutorial we will be learning all about widgets, as these can add some real benefits and functionality to our websites and marketing efforts, I will always teach these tutorial with no assumptions, in other words I will not assume you have any knowledge of this subject, so as not to miss anybody out and make sure you all understand WordPress from the core rather than the surface, so lets begin

An introduction to widgets in WordPress

Well what are widgets, put simply as I like to do, they are used to add content to your sidebars, it is important to understand that every theme is different and will come with a different set of widgets but their are a few generic ones that come will almost all themes and as we go through this training we will be disusing some of the generic widgets and how to use them to enhance your website.

How to access your widgets

Go to your dashboard and scroll down and click on appearance there you will see a drop down menu and you can clearly see the Widgets tab once you click on this you will be taken to your widgets area, you will notice that I have the Genesis theme so my widgets will not be exactly the same as yours but don't worry they all work in the same way in WordPress, which ever set of widgets you have.

Here is what my widgets in one of my sites look like

So lets talk about the text widget first as this is one of the most common widgets used and its very versatile, I will show you first what the side bar looks like on my ovulation site so you can see how the widgets are displayed live on the site

Here you can see I have a picture of me and some text as well as above an RSS feed which is also in a text widget

The text widget is used for text and HTML so you can write content in them as well as using them for things like RSS feeds and putting in images, you need to put the HTML code of the image in the text Box to display an image in the side bar and I will show you how to do this next.

I will do a separate tutorial on RSS feeds, lets get the basics right first, then I will explain RSS in another tutorial, as there is quite a bit to know about RSS feeds.

Does the image you add to the text widget show on all the pages? I need to have an affiliate link on the side bar for just one of my pages. How do I do that?
Reply

Yes, once you put a widget on the sidebar, it will show on all posts and pages.

Hi Barry This is really a great tutorial! I don't know if this is possible but I would like to use a text widget and make it into a footer menu. My primary menu is used for across the top and on the side it is divided into recent posts ant categories. I am using the Iconic One theme and it only comes with one menu but is it possible to make a footer menu out of a text widget even if my theme does not have any footer menus? I hope this makes sense.
Thanks very much,
Barbara

Hi There, you cant make a footer menu out of a text widget

Just add another text widget to the side bar and you can put what ever you want in the text widget

where can I find my page IDs ?
Reply
Juneyo Premium
Go to the page you want and click on Edit. Then, look at the URL bar and you’ll see numbers (image below). That number is the ID for that specific page.

You have to come back for the Widget and search a tutorial in WA on the theme.

Create custom sidebar menu and move your legal page to the custom sidebar you created. The link below will help

Hi Barry, thank you again for your tutorial, I have just installed 'display widgets', so that's very exciting, but I have created a widget for a product in amazon to put on my site, and for some reason this is not display at all. I have followed the instructions and tried it over and over but still won't appear on page once I save and check the site. Why would this be happening, my other widgets are fine, thank you :)

Do not follow this. 1. Why to put pages on sidebar widgets at all? I need this space for other purpose (banners, ads, post categorization etc), pages are already on the upper bar of my site.
2. I create Legal pages in footer area, and then exclude some to keep only those in legal category. This means that whenever I add new page or sub-page to my site I have to exclude it from the footer area. Is this the most elegant way?

Jovo, Many times Pages on Sidebar add more important info, plus it can be for quick access to information that may lead to more Affiliate Links that go with the Tittle of that Page. Just a Thought!

Hey Barry. It's me again. I want to thank you for the WA lessons with html. I was trying to implement lesson 2 of word press clinic, but I must be missing something. I didn't want to use the text to go to one of my own pages, but wanted to use it to send viewers to a different site. The url is http://search.ams.usda.gov/farmersmarkets/ What I wanted to do was to use a draft page as instructed, I assumed to change the first line of a href="http://healthyeatingforyourfamilyandyourpets.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/steldev3000003FarmersmMarketUSDA.jpg"><img src="http://healthyeatingforyourfamilyandyourpets.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/steldev3000003FarmersMarketUSDA-300x36.jpg" alt="steldev3000003FarmersMarketUSDA" width="300" height="36" class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-500" /> which I thought would give me a picture on my site, and wanted to provide a link to the url. What is it that I am missing? Thanks in advance, Rick.

Display Widgets sounds like a good plugin, but it hasn't been updated in 9 months and may not be compatible to the current version of Wordpress.

Lesson 2 question.

For the example you have with the linked image... will that page open in a new window? I believe I've tried this before, and there was no option to check...to ensure it didn't take the visitor away from the web page.

Great post! I currently only use widgets on my blog page for recent posts and a secondary menu. I use Headway themes which allows you to load standard page content into your sidebars, which is what I do on all of my other pages (no HTML needed).
