I saw some questions about using WordPress Categories and noticed that the resources were a bit sketchy on how to use them.

I put together this short tutorial for you to learn how to set-up Categories and get them into your menu.

As I was reviewing this, I noticed that in the Edit section I didn't update the page after I changed the categories. You must do this to save your changes.

I hope this makes life easier for you.

One more thing..Now I have my categories in my website's menu. But I would like to show in the Menu under each category the listing (titles) of the posts in that category. The idea is that the reader can choose which post in that category to read.Clicking on the title the reader should open the post that he wishes to read.
Reply
IrmaStretch Premium
Go into Appearance > menu. Usually it defaults to pages first, but your blog posts should be in there just underneath in the section titled Posts.

Add your posts by clicking each one to add the check mark and look for the button that says add to menu.

When you have added all of your posts you can then drag the posts up under the category and indent it.

Don't forget to save!

Hope that makes sense,
-Irma :)

Thanks! I had been noticing all my posts were un-catorigised. I thought this might be hurting my search rankings so I went to fix them. After 1 failed attempt I figured I should probly find out exactly what category's are in stead of just assuming they have something to do with search engine rankings:)
Thanks again your post definatly helped!

What do you use Categories for for my niche and website Demo does not explain what to name my categories
Reply

You can name them anything you need. The name is not important. I usually choose something descriptive to make things easy.

Thanks, Labman - I was looking for this information. I do have one question though.... I now have my Categories under my Main Menu titles, but now I cannot click on the original Main Menu Titles and access those Pages I created,
I did it another way before and added the Posts to my menu structure, but again, when inserted under the Main Menu titles(or Themes), I lost the ability to access that main menu page.

Not sure where I'm going wrong...any ideas?

Cheers,

Erica

Thank you - I can see in your video that it works. But for some reason, it's not working on my site. I do have to update WP, but I needed to work out how to do the backup first. In saying that, it didn't work for me before the latest update anyway.
Reply

Check the video above. I mention Categories at Minute 2:25 and the location selection at 4:45. I suspect that you are not selecting the location to be displayed.

Great video again. I was thinking of something, what's the difference actually between adding categories to a page (like you did on the video by indenting them), or indenting pages into pages (like in your menu video) and then put posts inside the pages.

Looks like almost the same?
Reply
Labman Premium
Categories are only for posts. The L'Oiseau site actually has categories on their sub menus. Like the Australia page. Australia is a category but on the menu it is on the sub-menu.
Reply
Sylvain34 Premium
Thanks for the answers. I came back on her website to see actually. You're right.
She has a menu, and sub-menu for different continent and then she categorize posts of each country inside a category.

I get it now. I'll continue right now the training.

so i cant make categories for the side bar?
Reply
Labman Premium
Yes, you can create a widget with categories. Go to appearance>>widgets select the categories widget in the left window and add it to the widget you wish to use (probably the sidebar location).

You can also create a custom menu containing just the category or categories you wish to display and select that for display in you sidebar widget.

Great tutorial! Exactly, what I was looking for. Can I mark - let's say - a "Home" - category as my first (landing) page?
Reply
Labman Premium
Yes, that is doable. Typically you would have a blogroll but you can set the default category to a list of Home blogs.
Reply
Merlster Premium
I accomplished it now by setting the home tab to an URL which directs to the base URL without any slashes behind. In the settings of my Theme I defined that landing page shall be the recent blogroll.

Good day, Labman. I hope this finds you well.

I was just wondering, in the drop-down menu should the sub-titles below the page title be marked "Catagory" or "Post" as in the attachment below? I hope this is legible.

As you can see, below the right side of the heading is either "Catagory" or "Post". Should they be one of the other or does it even matter?

Thanks, in advance, for your answer.....Wayne
Reply
Labman Premium
If you choose categories, the menu item will show a blog roll for that category. If you choose post it will display just the individual post.
Reply
Wayne66 Premium
So, I'm thinking that post would be better? Or does it just show that particular post when you use catagories?

Your Home or Getting Started Page should inform your visitors what can be found on your website...brief description.
Your CATEGORIES will include your CATEGORIES. You will classify certain topics. Decide what those topics are and continue. You should be using your Keywords. Your content includes your Keywords.

Take notice of the icon down the left edge of the list. That tells you whether it's a video, training, blog post or just another user question.

Also, down the right edge, is the name of the author. You'll soon get to know who's worth listening to and who to swerve.

And you can bookmark stuff for later.

If I've got two pages, let's say "diet" and "exercise" and I categorise posts under these two, if I wanted to put some static content on them later, would that be possible or would I have to make a new page with the categories as sub-menus? Hi Labman, Haven't yet watched the video above, but will get to it. I have pages set up for both my sites, because that's what we were instructed to do in the courses, which I'm following religiously. However, I have no posts, so when you visit my sites the first page is empty where a blog should be. Can you please explain the difference between the two, and when I use what.

I always thought pages were just about me, FAQs, privacy, contact and posts were all the articles you write.

If you have a minute can you look at my site and tell me if it's okay so far? Tons of conflicting info in chat at the moment. Thanks, Hindy

I just looked quickly at your cratetrainingyourpuppy site. You have what Kyle taught you to do so you are off to a great start.

The purpose of the three (you actually have four) pages is to share basic information about several key areas of your niche topic. You've done that already on two of the pages and have initiated your FAQ page.

As you continue the training, Kyle will guide you into how to search for keywords and how to use them as you develop posts for your blog. Once you start writing posts they will show up on the blog roll on your home page (so don't worry about that at this point).

To be honest, you could take some of the information you have on your Training and Tips page and create several posts from that info. It appears right now that you have 5 separate topics all lumped into one very long page.

Each of those topics could become a separate post if you re-wrote your Training and Tips page to talk about the idea that there are many things that go into training a puppy and you will be discussing those things in your posts (obviously, add a little more content than this one sentence but the page does not have to be long - you aren't trying to rank your page necessarily).

Great info! I love puppies and I really miss having a dog but our older lifestyle no longer allows us that opportunity.

Hi Allyn, I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I clearly misunderstood something in the training, then didn't get great advice at one point. Grateful for your advice, that's exactly what I'm going to be doing today. It's tough when you're not able to have a pet when you want one - do you volunteer at a local shelter? Have you considered fostering short term?

My wife and I are now living with my son, daughter-in-law, and four grandchildren (youngest just turned two). There are three cats with us but no dogs at the moment. I think they will get one eventually but I think it would be too much overload on my daughter-in-law at this time.

I haven't volunteered at a shelter but that's an interesting idea. I'm working part-time right now so it's a possibility. Thanks for the idea.

This video does not do what I want categories to do. On my website I have 1 menu created. Not even sure how I did that. So, my 3 main pages are across the top. How do I get my categories on the right side of the page. and still be able to put an affiliate link over there ? Someone mentioned something about creating a static page. But I dont know what that is. Thanks !

Thank you, that was very helpful. I just made a post (my first one!). My niche is toys for toddler girls and I would like this post to appear on the home page but also on the page called riding toys. It's not that I want to créate a category or subcategory. Does that make sense? Should I just leave it on the home page. What eventually happens to old posts?
Reply
AllynBeekman Premium
Your post will display on the home page naturally. The default is that your home page is a rolling blog that contains a summary of a specified number of posts (a parameter that is in your settings). As you continue to create posts for your site and you pass that specified number of posts, this first post will roll off the home page.

This is a key reason to use categories. When you assign a category to each post, you have another index into your posts other than the rolling blog on your home page. You can add a categories widget on your sidebar that allows visitors to access posts based on these category keywords.

Also, if you want your post to display on the riding toys page, you should establish a category (call it "riding toys" or similar) and attach it to that page, as noted in this training. If you do that, all posts that have the category of riding toys will display and be accessible from your Riding Toys page.

Labman, you are losing audiences that cannot work with videos. I for one cannot afford to watch videos as it eats up my internet data second to none. Is there any way you can add the dialogue in text format? This would help greatly!

Labman, in one of the responses, below, you said back to them how important it is to be understood in your training.

Your training was very clearly presented and comprehensive. Just one thing was difficult to follow. It was the moving of the mouse while you were speaking. This is just a thought, if you spoke a tad bit slower so the mouse and what you are saying are at the same location and at the same time. Just a thought!

Whoa, if that bothers you then Kyle must drive you nuts. Whenever Kyle goes into "mild waffle mode" he randomly clicks on stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic or the waffle. Makes me want to scream.
Reply
Labman Premium
Often that is part of the editing process. This was one of my earlier videos and I was still learning the interface.

Sorry if it was distracting for you.
Reply
BrenSt Premium
Hey Labman, it happens to a lot of presentations. I have no idea how to do one so hurray for you that you make them for us. At least now I know what causes it. That's a bonus.

I don't want to complain, but at the same time I believe if I don't speak up I have no business whining....

Hi Craig
Great tutorial , as always. As we are discussing wordpress I have a big problem I would appreciate your advice on. I've been trying to get an answer about my 'Catch Evolution' theme header image, for quite some time now, and still I'm not sure how to cure the following problem.

My theme header images, were a bunch of orchids; and, what looks like, a Buddhist monk sitting at study in a monastery. The two images used to automatically 'slide' and change places with each other.

However, the header images have stopped 'sliding' and the the bunch of orchids, has disappeared. All I see now is a staic image of the monk! Any suggestions on how to put this right will be really, really, very much appreciated, as I haven't been able to get a solution from the community yet..
Reply
upsgirl Premium
Those images come loaded with that Theme. Install another Theme and then reinstall Catch Evolution.

Kingfisher Premium
Thanks Deidre, I know that you suggested this solution last week, but I hesitated as I have almost nine months of added content, articles, posts, etc', that i am scared of losing. I guess I'll have to take a chance on that though and follow your advice. Thanks for your input. (Don't you ever get to sleep ;-0)
Reply
Labman Premium
You don't need to worry about your content. The theme and the content live in WordPress separately. If you are concerned, back up your site before you proceed.
