Upgrading to WordPress 5? Don't Panic

One of my favourite books of all time is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It’s a book about a book which has the words “Don’t Panic” written on the cover in large, friendly letters.

So, in the immortal words of Douglas Adams, “don’t panic”.

WordPress 5 is now available for you to update your website.

But there are some things you need to do before you update.

You probably know most of this already, but please follow along. You may pick up a gold nugget or two.

What if I Hate the Block Editor?

Don't panic. Install the Classic Editor plugin then go to Settings > Writing and check the box for "Use the Classic Editor". Things will look exactly the same as they did before the upgrade.

You can try the block editor again when you're more relaxed.

Hello there, I'm wondering if anyone can help me with a very simple matter (for some, not for me!): How do I get the classic look back to my WP 5 upgrade? I'm okay with it, but for now I just want to keep working on my blogs without worrying about any new stuff.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks, Marion. We have now successfully updated to 5.0 and are having a blast playing with it. This is going to make life so much easier. Up to now, we have been using SiteContent to create our content and only used WordPress for minor edits. But no more.
Thanks again for all your help.

I get this message when trying to install UpdraftPlus:
Installation failed: Could not copy file. updraftplus/vendor/guzzle/guzzle/src/Guzzle/Service/Description/ValidatorInterface.php

also when using WP Clone I get "Error Message : possibly out of free disk space"

Anyone know whats wrong? Isn't a regular "Tools>Export" action enough as a backup?

Contact Site Support, Fredrik. This sounds like a technical issue. Tools > Export does not back up your themes, plugins and media library.

Excellent training Marion, and ideal for the newbies of non techy among us : )

Thanks for sharing a very useful training. It must also be said that for those who have been using other editors such as Elementor or Thrive, then this update won't be as fearful as it will be for others

I’m glad wp gave us the option of the classic editor plug in. I played with wp 5 a little bit today and I can see how someone will be able to make a post more appealing. But for now I am going to use the classic editor until I get used to wp 5.
I will have to admit I did panic until I installed the classic editor plugin.

I am just going through this now and it does make some changes to the fonts that I I have been using. I am just tired of going through it all again to edit the fonts that I am using. What shall I do? I am trying to use the old version again and couldn't figure that out. Any help would be great.

I can only publish one training video a day, Darusila. I'll have another video tomorrow.

Hi Marion...here's the blog stating problems with WP Clone. I just did my backup using it and it worked perfectly...but I guess the problem is in restoring. Can you please comment on this. I hope it still can be used...it was so easy.

Thanks,
Debbie

Check Trish's response under ElaineSmith1's comment.

It's still working except for the "Copy URL" function. I restored a website just this morning.

Hey Marion,
I just heard that WP Clone wasn't to be used from now on. Is this true. Please advise.

Nope... that was a heads up that the plugin appears to be deserted Elaine and nothing was said about never using it again. The WARNING is what WordPress put on their plugin page. If it continues being neglected then it will eventually no longer work at all.

I'm still using WP Clone as well as other backup methods.

Good to know, Marion. I recently updated to WP 5.0 and it caused my site editor to look a bit on the funky side.
