Upgrading to WordPress 5? Don't Panic

One of my favourite books of all time is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. It’s a book about a book which has the words “Don’t Panic” written on the cover in large, friendly letters.

So, in the immortal words of Douglas Adams, “don’t panic”.

WordPress 5 is now available for you to update your website.

But there are some things you need to do before you update.

You probably know most of this already, but please follow along. You may pick up a gold nugget or two.

What if I Hate the Block Editor?

Don't panic. Install the Classic Editor plugin then go to Settings > Writing and check the box for "Use the Classic Editor". Things will look exactly the same as they did before the upgrade.

You can try the block editor again when you're more relaxed.

Hi Marion...here's the blog stating problems with WP Clone. I just did my backup using it and it worked perfectly...but I guess the problem is in restoring. Can you please comment on this. I hope it still can be used...it was so easy.

Thanks,
Debbie

Check Trish's response under ElaineSmith1's comment.

It's still working except for the "Copy URL" function. I restored a website just this morning.

Hey Marion,
I just heard that WP Clone wasn't to be used from now on. Is this true. Please advise.

Tried and True

Nope... that was a heads up that the plugin appears to be deserted Elaine and nothing was said about never using it again. The WARNING is what WordPress put on their plugin page. If it continues being neglected then it will eventually no longer work at all.

Good to know, Marion. I recently updated to WP 5.0 and it caused my site editor to look a bit on the funky side.
