Where can you get images for your website?

One of the biggest issues that confronts newbies when they set up their first website is where to get pictures from, what the cost might be and what the copyright rules are. So this resouce has been created to provide you with some websites that might be useful.

It is vby no means a definitive list. There are a lot of suitable sites available - the ones mentioned here are ones that I have experience of using.

I have tried to give a brief but balanced view of the different sites and offer advantages and disadvantges of each.

However, you really should investigate them for yourself because your views will be swayed by what is available in your particular niche

Websites

Paid images

Free images:

Terminology

The terminology can sometimes confuse people when trying to find pictures. These are two differences.

Free images = images that can be downloaed for no charge

Royalty Free Images = images that you pay for on a single occasion and then there is no limit to the number of times you use them.

Warning

.You need to read the terms and conditions, license and copyright rules posted on each of the individual sites. Do not take it for granted that they are all the same. They're not!

Thank you BIS.

I would just like to add a site specific to icons, instead of pictures (if anyone is interested to enhance the view of a website):

ICONSPEDIA: http://www.iconspedia.com/

It's all free and it has a very large database.

Great info "BIS." There's another source that you can use for FREE even for commercial purposes AND no attribution required! I just used some for a landing page header. Here's the Licensing Terms: http://morguefile.com/license/morguefile/

Thanks for this. I'm going to check out all the ideas that people have given me - and then I will add a page for them - so we have a really good resource for people.

I second that - great training resource BIS. A new player in town that I've checked out is PhotoDune.net. They have a nice collection of stock images which I haven't seen replicated across other marketplaces.

Great resource again BIS, also very good how you've gone into some detail and not just listed a bunch of sites. Thanks

Thanks Craig. It's not a very long list but I wanted to be able to talk about sites that I've used myself.

I also use Clipart.com for paid photos and normally find what ever I'm looking for, I like them because the price is pretty good compared to other stock photo sites and they offer subscriptions like you pointed out.
