The introduction of Mobilegeddon in 2015 along with the presentation of mobile-friendly updates was a great sign that the revolution of the mobile era had begun. This led to Google considering the Mobile Device as an important element in its search algorithm.

This change is visible when you look at the highest percentage of traffic coming to Google. Most people access Google on their mobile devices, and this has led to webmasters optimizing their sites to fit into mobile devices.

When the Google main index was still based on the desktop version of any blog content, mobile versions of sites were not given the kind of attention they should have, and this is bad for SEO.

The Claim of Search Index Split

At a certain point, Google disclosed that it's going to make mobile content a major source for its search algorithm. This created some level of uncertainty because Google earlier revealed its intention to split up its search index.

However, this claim was later dismissed publicly, and people were told that there is going to be only a single search index, and that would be for the mobile.

When Was Mobile-First Indexing Activated?

As of July 2019, all new websites were mobile-first index activated, and already existing ones will have the evaluation and inclusion of their page done gradually.

Where Do Website Owners Stand in This Case?

If you have a good website structure with designs and themes that can fit into different sizes of screens easily, then you have nothing to be troubled about.

This change that was implemented is only going to affect website owners that have failed to provide mobile users with a smooth user experience. Knowing this, you have to ensure that mobile SEO is your major target.
