Not sure what tags are or how to use them? This is the training for you! I also talk about some confusion between "Tags" and "Meta Tags".

Good tutorial. I added some tags but I think I will stick with the Categories. I was adding the meta info manually too (I know Kyle told us that you need to...so you). I was just maybe trying to include more than what I will get from auto meta info. Thanks man. BTW I added you on WA. :)

Thanx for this. Been using tags for over a year but never really understood them. Until now.

Hey there my colleague. I did this illustration for someone a while ago. It shows you the steps.

I did it for all H tags as I use the H2 sometimes where Kyle uses the H3.

Trying to understand what tags are on the blog page and it won't allow me to post without them. So how do I find them?
Reply
MasterEd Premium
They are related to SEO and can be found/used during post creation in WordPress.
Reply
HelenpDoyle Premium
The tags should consist of words describing your blog/post. This helps the search engine find them when people search topics with different words.

You don't find them you select them.

Thanks for explaining tags and how to use them. I'm still not sure that they carry any importance and for now I won't be using them. Maybe later.

Robert, they are important as they act as keywords when people search.

Use the H tags wisely and gain traffic. Here is how to use them,

In just a regular blog on my profile page, I can't publish my blog without adding 2 tags....
Reply
SuzetteH Premium
That's correct. Add a word or short phrase that is relevant to your post. Many times you will some suggestions pop up that you can use. Add them one by one. You can add as many as you want but two are required. Does this help?

Chipster61, your bit about Kyle getting some pointers from Nathaniell is hardly appropriate. These men are professionals and we should try to stay away from negativity as much as possible. Let's simply appreciate the vast knowledge both these gentlemen offer!

Nathaniel - thanks for the training. Very helpful. Food for thought on training - start out with WHY first (ie. "we're going to use tagging as an organizational tool or method to help us refer to posts in searches and links across categories". This addresses why do I want to listen to this and when I know basically what a Tag is used for, and I want to do that, then I become a much more steadfast listener as you address WHAT, and HOW.

I have went over and over this video and think I got it until I go to check it. I put the name of my website/category/name of category and I get a message saying not found. Why is this happening? What can I be doing wrong? Getting frustrated!
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Make sure you spelled everything right and you have .com! If your category is two words, it has to be written like website.com/category/category-name
Reply
SuzetteH Premium
So if my category is [My Reviews] it would be website.com/category/my-reviews
Reply
nathaniell Premium
that's correct.
Reply
SuzetteH Premium
I really must settle down LOL. Thanks Nathaniell. It worked!
Reply
nathaniell Premium
However, I checked your website and your category name is product-reviews. click the little folder at the bottom of your reviews that says "product reviews" and it will take you to the category page :)
Reply
SuzetteH Premium
thank you very much. I will do just that. The my reviews was for my other site about felines :). Now off to tags. I went way over board and did not use them correctly. I love your training videos. They teach me a lot especially when I have been away for some time.

Hi Nathan, I am back at last!! Thanks that was great training and very clear. I had been pasting all my search words in tags but now I will definitely go back and reduce them to just a few necessary links. Now about the meta search word area that you said we should not worry about because SEO pack takes care of them ... is there a problems if I paste more search words in there? and is it OK to enter search words that are relevant to the subject but may not even appear in the text of the post? cheers John

Oops, I am technically challenged but I will get there. I think I understand now that tags link posts with similar content to each other? Does the WA system do the linking automatically? Still not really sure what I am doing. I clicked on add tag and typed in FB and then I could publish, still not sure what that did with FB and I don't see a "Tagged" list on the right of my blog like on your page here. I haven't done that part of the training yet, was so excited when I upgraded to the premium package that I completed the tasks on the welcome page when I opened it and blogging was one of them so I got caught up with it. Oh well, I will not get frustrated, I will learn as I go. New things are confusing at first.
Reply
alleo Premium
I always think about a clothes shop where you can find say a pair of jeans, attached to the jeans is a label with size, material, color.

So a post would be in category "Jeans" with tags "28", "Denim", "Black", so if you clicked on the tag "Denim" you will see all posts that are made of "denim"

It's the same as asking the shop assistant to bring you every item of clothing that has "denim" on the label.

Your right, don't get frustrated and don't worry if you are not sure.

I am so confused, if a tag is like a post it, I still don't know what a tag actually is?? Is it a link to another site or other info somewhere on the web or information of your own on another post or one of your sites? If so I can't do my first blog post as I have nothing to tag it to. I typed in Facebook and I see a tag appear but still don't know if that tag when clicked will take me to my own face book page or what?
Reply
divadejunk Premium
A tag is a keyword. It tells what your post is about. It could also be a category. I hope that clears it up for you.
Reply
nathaniell Premium
It's a link on your website that links to all posts with the same tag. It's displayed on the page as a single word, and when you click it, you will be taken to a page on your website with a list of all other posts with the same tag. There are several tags on this page to the right. Click one and see what happens!
Reply
ingiB Premium

Hi Nathaniëll, I tagged all my posts, but I have a question, someone told me in the beginning you put a # before your tags, to make them more powerfull, what do you have to say about that?
Really curious, is that more effective, while I see you do not use a #
Greetings Loes
Reply
nathaniell Premium
I don't think that's true at all. I don't know why they would say that. # is for hashtags and just used on social media.
Reply
Loes Premium
Would it hurt?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
I don't really know. Probably not. Check out your tag URL. If it looks normal (like in the video) it's probably fine. I've just never tried it before so can't actually say either way.
Reply
Loes Premium
Where the Heck do I check out my tag URL?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Type it into your browser. website.com/tag/my-tag. If that leads you to your tag page, then you're fine. You can see a list of your tags in Posts > Tags

Great stuff Nathaniell but i don't recall in training that we were not to complete the meta tags, I have been completing them!! Olive
Reply
nathaniell Premium
You *can* do the title and description if you want...it's done automatically for you, but you can overwrite it if you don't like the description. Meta keywords is the one you want to stay away from because it doesn't do anything and putting too many in there can hurt rankings (keyword stuffing)
