Pages in the Menu

The top menu of your blog only displays the first 5 pages based on their order. However, the Right hand side menu displays all pages on your site that you have chosen to include in the menu.

When publishing a page you have the option to include the page in the menu. Not all pages that you add to your site will be placed in your menu. For example if you have a Pay-per-click campaign running with 50 different adgroups, you will have 50 different landing pages that are fine-tuned for each ad. You cannot have 50 pages in your menu. The same goes for Article marketing. You may have 50+ landing pages that you link to from your articles. What you want to do is choose a handful of pages that offer your visitors quality content without duplicating what you are delivering.

You may want to have the following pages in your menu (examples only):

  • Homepage
  • About Me
  • #1 recommendation
  • Frequently Asked Questions
  • Link to your Blog
  • Contact me

However, you may have pages that are created specifically as landing pages that focus on specific keywords
(examples only):

"how to make money online"
"how affiliate marketing works"
"best affiliate marketing training"

etc...

Pages that are fine-tuned as landing pages for ads or articles don't go in your menu.

Ordering Pages

As mentioned above, the first 5 pages in order are displayed in the top menu, while ALL pages that you include in the menu show up on the Right Hand Side menu:

The order of your pages is set by using a numerical value in the "Order" section of the Attributes. You will find the Attributes section on the page edit screen. It looks like this:

**The menu is displayed from lowest to highest.

I think I have it now...Pages are more personal and Posts are more formal/product information content?

pages are going to be for content that doesn't change..like some running themes or main ideas that will always remain the same for your site. Posts are going to be for everything else - the posts that you make on a daily or weekly basis.

If your site is about being a vegan, then you could have a page about tofu. But a post could be 5 benefits of steaming your tofu instead of frying it.

If your site was about cars, then you could have a page about Ford. But then you can have a post about how to fix the muffler on a 67 mustang.

....Finally...thanks 4 this relate-able breakdown of pages/posts. For me...and many others I think...some of this jargon needs to be broken down to every day situations I can relate to. Thank you nathaniell.

my site is about weight loss-its get motivated lose weight. so far I have an about page (talking about what my site is about) and a life story page. I want to add a page called Proven Ways to Get Motivated and list 5 or 6 different ways to stay motivated and write a little but about each one. Would that be a Page or a Post? Also my website doesn't have a home or a blog page is that okay?

I am really confused and I apologize. Is the WA Blog you are talking about the one I post on in WA Spaces or am I TOTALLY missing a resource?

thx for doing this tutorial ! It is one of these tutorials I intend to come back to over and over. There are so many specifics here, I cannot expect to hold them in my head right now. First I will get my blog set up. I am such a newbie that I still have nothing up and running! Once I have the structure set up, I can actually use this great tutorial to its full advantage. I look forward to doing a second comment here, that says how I am actually using it !
