Today we are going to be getting our website ready for the prime time!

The first thing we are going to focus on is our framework/foundation. Without this, we are going to have a tough time building anything of significance and it will be hard to retain focus on the direction of your website.

So, today is website set up day and it is going to involve creating a little bit of content. I have created a video walk through of this entire lesson and everything that needs to be accomplished here.

DISCUSS VIDEO: Setting Up Your WA Affiliate Website

Your first task is going to be to set-up the plugins that come pre-installed with your website.

We are going to be activating the following plugins today:

(1) All in one SEO (activate and set-up)
(2) Exclude Pages from Navigation (simply activate)
(3) SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam (already set-up)

And then you will see some other plugins that we can ignore for now. The plugins that you don't have to worry about installing just yet (ignore their error message):

(1) Akismet (used for stopping spam)
(2) Google Analytics (for website traffic and user metrics)

These are going to be installed as we need them and you will be walked through this in a later lesson.

Task 2: Putting your pages together.

Your next task is simply to create 3 different pages. Simply Add these pages for now (you can leave the content area blank), as we are going to be creating the content for them in the next step.

Page 1: Getting Started
Page 2: About Me
Page 3: Privacy Policy

Task 3: Write Your About Me Page

OK, the content. You can have a look at my site and get some ideas for content, but please don't copy and definitely don't use my content as an exact template. If you get into the habit of "monkey see monkey do" then it can lead to issues in the long term. Be creative with your content.

One important thing I want to mention before we get into content. If you COPY content from other sources and put it on your site, you will not get rankings in Google and other search engines. This is "duplicate" content and search engines will actually punish you if you do this. No rankings = no traffic = no conversions...a big deal.

Yes, influence is more than OK and yes, ask for feedback if you need help. Here is what I came up with for these initial pages, yours can be similar but don't copy the content.

Getting Started Online

About Me

Privacy Policy (give a template here)

Here is the sample Privacy Policy Content that you can use on your website:

Task 4: Create a New User within Wordpress

Your last task is going to be setting up a username that represents you. This is going to be your new name that you will use to log into your website and it will allow you to post pages, posts, and comments as your name, versus posting as "admin". It adds a much better personal touch to your website and it is highly recommended.

To add a new user, you will want to visit the Users tab within the WP-admin area. Under this tab, you will see an "Add New" option. Click that.

This will take you to the Add New User page.

You will want to fill out the details. Note that the Username is the name that you will be posting with, so either use your first name or a pen name, whichever you plan on branding on your website.

In the case of my website, I selected "Kyle" as my username that I will be using to post all of my comments and communicate with.

Make sure that you set the Role to "Administrator" and that you store your username and password somewhere safe. These are going to be your login details that you use for logging into your Wordpress Administration area going forward.

Upon clicking the "Add New User" button, the process will be complete. The password is automatically created for you and will be given to you on the next page. It will appear as follows.

You can also get your passwords at any time within the SiteManager page. Each time you "Log In" to your admin are of your website, it will give you the Usernames for that website, along with the passwords. Our password technology at Wealthy Affiliate is encrypted and keep your website safe from hackers and attacks.

Tasks 0/5 completed
1. Set-up All of Your Website Plugins
2. Create your First 3 Pages
3. Write your 3 pages (About Me, Privacy Policy, Getting Started)
4. Create a new username within Wordpress

Hi Kyle, quick question on first timer setup here, have not yet upgraded, and happen to have registered a domain previously that I was going to use to set up my first free site. But 'On a Domain I Own' apparently isn't an option for the free members? The video describes that the system will allow registration of a domain for the free version so I was surprised by the payment option being prompted next (not that it's a show stopper, just good to know for clarification when I promote this later on :-). And, I'll probably go ahead and wait just a bit as I just joined yesterday and have things I'm needing to finish up before actually getting going on the site's content here anyway --- thanks again, and for such an awesome platform!

Hosting for your own domain is only available for Premium members.
You can get started with a siterubix domain and transfer the content to another site that you own (one click move) when you have upgraded.
If the other site already has content on it, this will need to be moved separately when you move the site.

Hi Vicki, to move your own domain to WA is a bit of a bigger task. I would not do it if I was not member anyway.
I got premium and paid for a year now after about three months, all I can say it is great. I learn so much from the community and the live video classes, money could not pay.
Have a good time and nice to meet you.

Once you are premium, domains you own can be transferred or linked up easily through nameserver linking. There are guides for that and otherwise the support team or people here (like me) can help you out on the process.

But like others say, start out for the trial period with a free subdomain and do the other stuff when you decide to go premium.

If I understand correctly, You can't use your own domain to set up the free site. The free site is for siterubix.

My website won't let me log into it/Wordpress from the site manager page :/ It keeps taking me to a blank white screen. It's still not indexed with Google after10 days. My other site is working great and was indexed in 24.I can't work on it - nada.
I also added another email a week ago, the email shows up under the email tag, but when I click on manage and log in for that site, it only shows the original log in that was automatically generated.
Can someone please help me:/

I feel very lost right now. I have followed the tutorial's steps and have published the site.pages but am unable to see them in my website. The tutorials are very confusing because the instructions do not match the pages I am working with. I am unsure if what I am doing is correct and then when I go to check to see if what I completed is right, I can"t see the pages. Also, when and how do we change the titles on the website? Mine still says "just another wordpress site". Please help!

Hey there!! The tagline is what you will need to change. Go to SETTINGS then GENERAL and you can change the tagline there. I attached a screenshot for you.

Can you send me the link to your site so I can take a look at it? It's hard to understand exactly what's going on without seeing what your seeing. Here to help. :-)

Hey Brett, wordpress tends to update a lot and that is why you may not see the exact same image as you would in the training.

What could be happening is that, it could be your theme that is a little different also, it could be because you published pages. Pages you will not see in your blogroll, posts you would be able to see in your blogroll.

Make sure you hit the publish button and create a menu, if you haven't gotten to that training yet, Kyle will cover it.

If it's bugging you here is the training,

I thought I had most things done as I was going along but may not.
On the training Kyle went and moved the privacy page off the main page. for some reason I cannot find the column down the right of the page where he unticked the page.

The other thing is there has been some good training on the Pretty link thing today but so far I havnt put in any links is that coming up or have I missed it. I went onto the conversation to see what was there and some guy had a website up that was way beyond what I think mine looks like so Im a little confused currently not sure if I need to push forward or retreat and if retreat where to.

I want to thank everyone that has tried to help me with my last question. Finally, I have figured out what was going on. My theme let me have only 2 menus, as I have found out. So, it doesn't have a list of the pages and posts in the widget page. And if you would remove the page, it would be gone period. So I did two menus without removing anything.
I want also thank this person that have tried to help me. Thank you, but I have forgotten your name. I am very bad with names. All the blessings for you and your loved ones.

Hello! It looks like you have a great website on your hands!

For feedback: In the who's this for? you have the words cake work and I think you mean cake walk.

You can remove categories from the side menu, since they are usually the same catagories that are in your main menu.

Also, remove Archives, as it shows that your site is brand new.

The sidebar is a nice place for affiliate ads when you are ready to place them. You can fill it in with a calendar or social media links.

Does your theme not have a blog roll on the home page?

I honestly don't know what a blog roll is.

Hey, Norman! I looked over your first page briefly and I'm learning websites, but am more a grammar, proofreader and copywriting kinda girl. If you want some help, I don't mind. I found 7 grammar issues in your first 2 paragraphs.

I would suggest using the free Grammarly or writing in a word processing program then transferring to your site, as the suggestions their editors use can help a lot.

Also, something to keep in mind is changing subjects and numbers. Meaning in each section, figure out WHO your subject is, you, someone else, or your reader, etc. And stick with that throughout the section.

The number meaning what person you are speaking from, first or 3rd. I would also try to avoid using 'absolutes' as they tend to make us look more 'salesy' than honest and can injure trust.

I love the way you have laid it out and the approach is pretty fresh. You have about 3 seconds to grab your audience's attention and keep it. So make your first headline(s), sentence and paragraph impossible to leave and don't let them go! I did find it interesting to read, authentic, and well laid out.

Your picture invokes trust and approachability =) definitely adds the AWW factor! Maybe try rewording some things for clarity and space like titles. they are best short and sweet. I love the pic to the side for comparison too.

I would add one more thing on initial looksee, and that it to make sure all your links or link possibilities are fully linked :)

You've been working hard!
Thanks for sharing your site =)

I made a little word doc for you to look over. If you want to send me your email, I can attach it. I am unable to send word docs on WA. Not sure if you have a viewer, but I made some comments, suggestions, etc for you to see. Once you look it over, if you're interested, I'm happy to help. The content is the most important part. It will take the longest and is usually the most difficult. Keep going! The site as a whole is good.

Can anyone help me, please! I am trying to do page and subpage. I can get that just fine, But, my subpages are showing on the side menu. I have tried to remove it, no use. Other than that I really don't know what to do.

This company that I am promoting has too many products, so, I decided to do subpages. So my website does not look awful. Too much stuff. I think I can try couple things, but, I am afraid that I am going to screw up bad. I need couple opinions or tutorials, much better. It's redundant to show up on the top menu and side menu the same thing.

I really don't mind if the 3 pages that have got the subpages, it's ok to show up on the side of the menu, and the top. But, really I'd rather not too. I mean, not on the side. Thank you so much. all the blessings to you and loved ones!

Thank you to all the lovely WAers who replied to my query below :) It has been well answered - effectively my bad: there's no need to worry about those plugins as long as we set up the All-in-one SEO

------------------------------
Ok folks - I am confused....

I set up my (2nd) site for the WA affiliate bootcamp. I started watching the video here and tried to follow along activating plugins... but the only installed plugins are the same ones that were on my first site - the All-in-one-SEO and the EWWW. The other plugins shown on the video are nowhere...??

Is this because I'm not a premium member? I tried to "add plugins" and search for those indicated in the video but as a starter member I don't have that facility.

Still all the training here (in phase 1) seems to suggest that it can be done by starters and premiums alike.

Grateful for any help :)

Duh!

Forgive me folks - I jumped the gun!
I see now that the plugins are either defunct or pre-installed :)
Apart from the SEO plugin of course.

Can I be really cheeky and suggest that - rather than re-doing the video - perhaps Kyle, Carson or someone who handles webpages here at WA could be kind and insert a line of text ABOVE the video just mentioning the current situ - i.e. Please note: in regard to the first 3 or 4 minutes of the video, just activate the SEO plugin - the others are now done for you (or a similar comment?)

I only mention this, because till now everything has been very clear, well-explained and easy to check back on :)

Hope I'm not overstepping here... trying to be helpful :)

(Unless of course I am the only member to date to have trouble with this - entirely possible!!!)

Thanks,

Moira

I encountered the same issue and found several responses. One was that the missing plugins are not needed so I just activated the two that were there. I moved forward in the training and so far have not encountered any problems. I wrote Kyle and Carson but never got a response. I am hoping one of them will answer me. I am being told that the tutorials are outdated and do not always match the updates made to the actual programs.

I honestly don't remember about plugins before I was a premium member. I think you have full access to WP. Try going to site manager>plugins>add new> and the enter a type of plugin in the search bar. A list of available plugins should come up. You simply install and active and set up the settings. Then you would normally go to Widgets and set the widget for the side bar or footer as your theme provides.

And as soon as Kyle has updated all tutorials, I think we all should just have a go on the whole course again ;)

Hi All,

I made the mistake of putting the cart before the horse and doing a bunch of things wrong, so am now carefully going back, doing the training the right way, etc. So...are the themed pages actual blog posts that go in the blog? If so, do they need keywords? At first I thought the themed pages were ideas only, but it looks like we are writing 30 posts? I don't want to NOT do keywords and then have thirty posts not doing anything. What is the goal, here?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. I just don't want to make any more costly and time-consumming mistakes. ;-)

Elizabeth
Reply
MsMerry Premium
no, not stupid Elizabeth. Not sure what you mean by themed pages? Your theme is the theme you have chosen for your site. An example is the Sydney theme.
Keywords are a must in any post or page you do. Back it up, and go thru that training again Elizabeth. It is there and probably easier to follow than me trying to explain it. Just know your posts are your content that you write about your chosen niche. If you have a page that says Reviews any post you write that are reviews connect to that page.

lizali, try, menu, click on created new menu, put name in menu title, click created new menu. On the left you should see your page titles. Select each box and on the bottom click new menu. The titles should appear on left side. Than you can select with mouse and drag up or down to place them in the order you would like them to appear on your home page. Good luck, oh click save changes at end. Always click saving changes after each edit.

It is okay- you will just have to install and activate them. What you can do is head to your dashboard, go to Plugins, then add plugins. Search up top. I always ask people what they use/recommend because there can be several options.

So in the search just type in SI CAPTCHA, etc...

Andrea, we do not need the SiCaptcha plugin anymore. The video just hasn't been updated.

Good morning!

On my website it says "Just another WordPress site" right underneath the title of my site - How can I remove that? http://studentsearnonline.com - if you all can also check and leave a comment for me? I just added the comment box, however I do not see it....

Thank you much in advance!

Hello,to change the default tag line, you should go to your WP admin area and select appearance.after that you select customize and look for an option labeled "tag line".when you change the tag line into what you want and you update or save your settings, the default tag line will disappear and your new tag line will be what visitors see when they visit into your site. For the comment box,you can't see it on your admin area it you go to your website, you will find it below each post.
Just try out what I have said and if you have any other difficulties, then don't hesitate to let me know.

Pictures, I want some to put on pages to support some of my text on my website but I don't know much about what the copyright info is on how much of photos or images can I use from other sites? Can I use photos from sites to create memes to support my text on pages?
Reply

Here is a link which will give you some ideas for free stock photos. Yes, there are copyright restrictions on most images you will find -- and you cannot just pull a photo off Google Images unless there is a copyright-free attribution which will allow you to use the image. Rather than go through that heart-ache and time of trying to find a copyright-free image, just check out the links to these sites: Good luck...!

You can create one for your site (if you own the domain) by going to site email and clicking on create email. It will be something like yourname@yoursite.com

Then you can forward it to your email so that only word press has your actual email address.

Hello, quick questions here..
I am aware that content should not be copied in any way.
What about the Privacy policy? the template of the privacy policy is provided, so I can replace the YOURWEBSITE.com with my website, but is it OK at all to use the same privacy policy for the remaining text as per the provided template? or can this be penalised as well by Google's search engine for duplicated content?
Any advice appreciated! Thank you!
Reply

You should exclude that page from search engines. If you have the exclude page plug in use that.

If not just below the meta title/description you will see some boxes.

Check those boxes. However search engines do what they want to do you are only asking.

I have actually a little question regarding the part of the course where one creates many themed content articles (6). Am I supposed to make 30+ pages or should I make some pages and put the rest of the content in as my blog? I did make them before, but than started to doubt and took them offline for the while, until I had a good plan and answer on this question.

steven - visualise what you want your site to look like at the end - when you have created all of the content you want to
how do you want the visitor to navigate your site
what key information are you giving to your visitors
plan it out and see if you can visualise how it would look - not happy with it - then change it till you are happy
how you create your content i up to you.
things can be changed so nothing is fixed in stone
using your skills you should be able to come up with something
good luck with your online journey

thanks for your reply. I haven't really figured out yet how I want the site to be. I guess that's the main problem here. I got content written for it, I got some themes, but how should it look like, I am not sure. This is the typical issue for me, because I am a programmer at heart and not a designer.

Suppose I just have to put up something out there and ask endlessly for feedback until it looks like something that anyone can understand and read.

what sites have you visited that you like
take the best of what you like and combine them into a site you like
really plan it form the back to the fornt
as i say if you are not happy with it why should your visitors be.
if you are affiliating wa only then make sure you really know what you are doing and are passionate about it.
if you are good at content writing then tick that box off - if you are not so good at ux then either pay over at fiverr or read up about it and learn it, move forward slowly don't try to run at the start - you know what happens to babies when they first run!!
you will have failures but learn from them - this is where your entrenpreneur comes in- pick yourself up and move on.
as you probably know the web does not move fast so don't expect overnight results - it all takes time.
when you meet a person for the first time do you trust them fully - it is the same on the net - it takes time and good information to start to trust the person/site.
so what problems in your niche are you solving, what value are you to your niche, who has benefited from your work
the main thing is to have fun and don't expect the money to come rolling in. solve the problems in your niche and see if you can get their trust then recommend things to solve their problems

Just make a few "core pages" for your main ideas of the site. The rest of your content, ie. keyword research stuff, will be on blog posts. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/the-differences-between-posts-pageshttps://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/the-differences-between-posts-pages

Arghhhh!!! There - I feel better now. OK - so I think I am having trouble with "Themes". I can't get the theme I selected to look the way I want it to. I want my posts to show the Title, a featured photo, and a small snippet from the post on my Home page. Instead, I have written 2 posts and they show the entire post on my Home Page. At this rate, my Home Page will be 3 miles long as I continue to write posts. What am I doing wrong???

Hello Bobbi,
At the top of your text editor, in the tool bar, there is a small icon that is dotted lines between two thick black lines. This is your 'Read More" button. Place it where you want to end your small snippet.
I hope this helps.

Reply
kdimeo Premium
I'm not sure about the 3 across thing; I think it has to do with the theme. I do know how to adjust the number of post that are seen. Go into your dash board. Along the side menu, select settings and then reading. Your theme may allow you to change the position of your posts there. At any rate, you will be able to change the number of posts you see. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful with showing you how to get your posts 3 across.

Hello,to get you theme to show more than one post,go to your WP menu bar and select setting, you would want to take reading and from there you will options that allow you to have you most recent post on your home screen or to have a static home page, you should take recent post.still on that menu you will find a section where you can choose to display half or full article. You should check the half article option.that will allow you to have mor than one post on your home page.

I think she is referring to 3 columns of featured posts. These are very theme dependent or in some cases you need a plugin. I need to know your theme to figure out what to do next, because the methods are not always alike.

Ok, I'm confused now... lol. So, I just purchased my domain, as you can see. Comments! This was not this difficult on my other domain, for my niche, but I just can not get the comments to show on every page like I am wanting. I am wanting them to show on the bottom of the page, where you have to type in your name and email and then leave the comment. Well, it looks like that can be done on the home page...kind of...you have to first press the red box at the top of the blog that, for now, has a "0" in it. Nothing about that suggests that if you press that you can leave a comment. I just want to where if you scroll to the bottom of the page after reading, there is just an area down there for comments, and I want this on each page. Can someone please take a look and help me out on this?

pexels.com
wiki commons
Google Images

Just make sure the images you choose have a CC0 license. Here are some blog posts you might find helpful: Hope this helps!

This is a question. I have completed lesson 6 and asked for reviews I did 3 pages and they don't have a comment block

One reviewer said the reason for this is that these are PAGES and not POSTS. I understand the difference, but as I read these lessons, I am taking the word "PAGE" literally. I am NOT using the write new POST but New PAGES.

Would someone please help and clarify for me? My site is at http://worldwideincomehere.siterubix.com/

This is my core theme, my full site (that after I get tweaked I will change over to my own "dot com" name.

So can someone please help me with clarification when to make a post or page.

Thank you.

You can create a post anytime you feel like it. Just go to Post in Word Press and click Add New. You can also try to add a comment box to the pages if your theme will allow it.
The training usually starts off with pages but now that you have the basics you can start to write Posts.

Hello,

In the lesson above where you are required to choose 3 themes/topics for your website and then 10 ideas of topics for each are you going to be using affiliate links to other products/programs?

I was under the impression that I was setting up a website to be promoting Wealthy Affiliate.......? I am confused now... :(
Reply
kdimeo Premium
Hi Laeticia,

Your website can promote anything you want to promote. The certification courses give you the basic steps you need to get your website going. They are general because some people do not wish to promote Wealthy Affiliate. You can promote Wealthy Affiliate--just come up with themes pertaining to that. For example, Getting Started, Building a Website, Product Reviews, How to find a niche, and etc.

The Bootcamp training is specific to Wealthy Affiliate; however, the steps are the same. The difference is that all of Kyle's examples in Bootcamp pertain to Wealthy Affiliate. His topics are Wealthy Affiliate specific.

I hope this helps clear things up for you.
