You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

The "make money with affiliate marketing" input is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Understanding Keywords, the Foundation of Your SEO Success" and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold.

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "helping aspiring affiliate marketers", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • affiliate marketing
  • make money online
  • affiliate marketing programs
  • how to build an internet business
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "affiliate marketing programs" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator). This is a quick indicator on the keyword viability and quality based on all of the combined metrics.

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "list affiliate marketing programs" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "of"). I would do another search on this but this time "list of affiliate marketing programs".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Go Premium and Get Jaaxy Lite (& Unlimited Searches)!

Tasks 0/3 completed
2. Perform at Least 5 Searches Using Jaaxy (do as many as you want though)
3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

Hello Kyle, just finish watching the video about the bootcamp and I cannot view some of the topics that you are mentioning on the last part of the video. Maybe my internet connection is too slow. But, anyway I will make sure that I will be able to learn those things in the next few days. Thanks! ❤️🙏

Hi - as you are following the Boot Camp training, then your niche is make money online. You just need to find a target audience. Do be aware that this is very competitive and you could potentially have to write hundreds of articles to see any great success.

Most people prefer to start with their own niche subject, which could literally be anything you are interested in. For example, family, pets, health, travel, fashion etc. If you would like to do this, you need to switch to the Online Entrepreneur training.

I would say you have to create your niche because you are the only one who knows your likes, interests, what really makes you sad, annoys you that people do. People have issues that you know the answer to. Those things are things you are passionate about. You have the answer to someone's problem. I am sure you can do this. Please let me and everyone know what you come up with.

The training says to comment here if struggling with 'direction' or even a niche itself for my website & hell yes, definitely struggling in that department!
Starting to understand the concepts through going through the training which has been awesome, & definitely have passions, things that interest me etc, but no real idea as to how to turn them into a niche that I can offer help, and monetize?

Absolutely love writing, but not quite sure how to market that exactly, so any guidance there appreciated.

Hi - you are currently in the Boot Camp training, which means your niche should be related to making money online. It is very competitive and you need to be really passionate about this subject to be able to come up with topics for hundreds of posts.

Most people prefer to start with the Online Entrepreneur training and choose their own niche such as family subjects, pets, travel, gardening, health, literally anything. It can be easier to write about a subject you have knowledge and experience of.

If you want to switch to the other training course, use the link below.

Hey buddy, can't say I've written any books yet no, but i do tend to go on a bit when writing, so probably have plenty of fuel to write quite a few I'd imagine. Just no idea how to go about that exactly, but more than happy to have a look into a few ideas if you would like something written. :-)

Hello Clinton,

Based on my study here, you should select a Niche that you use to be, near to your heart and you are comfortable with, so you can create relevant articles about it and publish it on your website.

Once you like it and is your passion you can always find a topic/keywords to write on and at the same time, you can link into any specific items to your articles and gain revenue later in the future.

Hope that helps.

Good luck!

Hi - you don't have to follow the Boot Camp training, now that you have finished level 1 of the Online Entrepreneur. You would need to select a different niche for it and start a second website, which you can't do as a starter member.

I suggest you concentrate on your first niche and now write lots of content for it.

Ok well I enjoy fitness and I DO use bulk up supplements and lift weights so that's why I thought of this as my website which I had made on the Online Entrepreneur Certification should I RATHER just go along with the Affiliate Boot camp and follow all the tasks and procedures .

Hi - if you are just looking for further information, but want to stick to your fitness niche, then you can read through the Boot Camp training, but not actually do the tasks.

If have now decided you would rather have a make money online niche, then you would need to delete the first website and build another one. However, do be aware that the make money online niche is extremely competitive, and you may potentially have to write hundreds of posts on the subject to see any great success.

Most people find it easier to write about a subject they are genuinely interested in and have some experience of.
Reply
Clinton30 Premium
but I can't continue with that training because I have to upgrade to premium first and I just do not have the money right now to upgrade .
Reply
Clinton30 Premium
ok thank you . I ENJOY fitness though so how do I DELETE my first site and which is better OEC OR the affiliate boot camp
Reply
DianeScorpio Premium
In that case, as I said, the most important thing at this stage is to write lots of articles for your website. Once you have about 15 articles, you can start applying to join affiliate programs and then promote products to earn a commission. This is a long term commitment and takes months of consistent work.

I suggest you following Miss DianeScorpio's suggestions on top. stick on with Online Entrepreneur Certification where you started. You have to concentrate on the 1st website to start writing content to follow the training there until you finish the training program. Then later, you can go to Bootcamp if you still want it and create a new Niche for making money online. You select one at a time.

Thanks,

Joyce

Ok thank you very much and writing content is what people will read when they are on my website am I right in saying that .
Reply
JEaston Premium Plus
Yes, that's right!

You write much content and when people come back to your site, they'll see your promoting product and purchase it through your link. Continue your training, so you learn all the process.

Good luck!
