This is Page 6 of the Tutorial - Please Start at Page 1 if you have questions.

After update the header file, visit your website home page.. This is important.

Leave this website open in your browser and go back to Google Analytics -(hopefully you have left this open in a tab or different window.. if not click back to analytics

www.google.com/analytics

and work your way back to the overview screen of your website tracking

click on real-time overview and you should see this screen with one visitor viewing website ( this should be you if you kept your site open in another tab.. if its zero, go back to your site and click a few pages then come back to this Google Analytics Screen

We now know that GA is installed and working so Let's Go to Webmaster Tools

With All In One SEO helping us with Analytics, do we have to do this part of editing the code in Header.php?
Reply

Hey Gomer,

This tutorial was created in 2013, and clearly labeled for those wanting to verify their websites (using what is now called Google Search Console) when they had no FTP access to their WP website.

Hope this explains.

In some cases editing the Header.php might be necessary but in most cases the All In One SEO plugin will take care of this for you. Keep in mind that if you edit the Header.php code when the theme updates these changes will be overwritten by the theme update unless you have created a child theme to contain the changes.

I see. That happened to me. I was wondering why the Google Analytics code is always missing. lol

I have a question. When I logged into Webmaster, my site was already listed. I didn't have to do anything. But, how do I know if my site is verified or not? When I click on the link that asks how I want my site listed (with www or without www), I click without and I go to save it, and it tells me that I have to verify my site. This is where I get lost. Another person on this site told me to enter my URL into my browser and once I do that I will receive a one line sentence saying that it is verified. This doesn't happen. How do I verify it?

This entire lesson apparently deals with the issue you're having questions about. From the Google Webmaster Tools dashboard there should be an option to Add New Property where you add the change to the URL you made. Step through and you'll find the Verification page. Use the Alternative Method tab and select HTML. You should then get the long hexadecimal verification code. Copy and paste that code into your website's SEO if it isn't there already. Be sure to Update the SEO. Then click on Verify.

I wrote a blog post on this topic. Feel free to read and use it!

I really appreciate the help, but for whatever reason, Google can't verify my site. I followed your instructions to the T, but still no verification. Not sure what I am supposed to do now. Also, when I put the meta tag in webmaster tools in SEO, after updating it, the tag is no longer there. Is this supposed to happen?
Reply
immistermike Premium
If Google won't verify then there is some kind of communication glitch between you and them. Be sure you are saving the SEO before attempting the verification.

If it still doesn't verify, you might want to get with SiteSupport and/or Google.

I just followed these instructions and Google Analytics is still showing 0 active visitors on site. I did as you instructed and went back to my website and clicked a few pages. went back to GA again and still says 0.
I'm working with a child theme so reverted back to parent theme to add the code (because the header page didn't show in the child theme) then switched back to the child. Would this cause a problem?

What now? thank you!
Reply
Labman Premium
You need to view your site from a separate incognito window then check your logged in view of Analytics. You should see yourself as a user in real time if it is installed correctly.

Is this ability only for premium members? I was unable to use the editor in my appearance tab.

I think there could be a restriction, however, I just checked my "siterubix" test website and I can still access the Editor from my Appearance.
I assume you also have a siterubix website?

Thank you Bo for this training. It was exactly what I was looking for, but didn't get it until after I figured everything out and got my site verified. Nonetheless, I am bookmarking it just in case I should have the problem again. Actually, Boomerpg08 (Robert) sent your training to me.

But, now I am having a problem because I keep getting an error when I do a test sitemap. Do you think you can help me with the error problem? -- Verna

Your page might be too young. It might not have been indexed and have other metrics for the tester to retrieve.

You could also try to install a different theme if you are using a cms like wordpress. The theme coding might have errors as some tend to whether from being outdated or otherwise.

Hope this helps :)

I had trouble too. What worked for me is to put your cursor immediately infront of </head> so it's blinking right first thing on the line kinda like this
|</head> then right click and hit paste. Then save changes, go to your homepage and then try to verify. That managed to work for me

HI Bo, I get the www.mysite verified but I can't seem to get the http://mysite verified. I follow the direction but in my Header file, I don't see the same thing as the example in Webmaster Tool. <head> insert code <title> I don't see a title tag. Any ideas?
Reply
BobBarr Premium
It doesn't really matter where in the 'head' section that you paste the verification code tag.

Just look for the head section's end tag (less-than, slash, "head", greater-than) and paste the line of verification code just before that line.
Reply
geowanda Premium
I must have been putting it in the wrong place. Thank you very much! It is now verified!
Reply
BobBarr Premium
Excellent, glad to here that.

One thing to be aware of, though -- If some future theme update overwrites your header.php file, you'll need to perform that copy-and-paste again.

Hey Bo.That,s a good tutorial however I am trying to tag.I have the google analytics set up from the start and webmaster tools but I am not getting any likes. The reason for this they say is because I either have no sessions or I am not tagged properly,I do have sessions so the problem is tagging, could this be because I have not put the link from webmaster tools into my account.Does that link help tag.Mark.....

Hi Beekay..here is the answer:
just google "get google webmaster tools verification code"
just get the meta tag and paste it before </head> tag in your wordpress theme file. Or install yoast seo plugin and paste your code here,if you are not tech savy.

I pasted the code above the </help> tag but I didnt get the "1" to show up on the real time overview. So I installed the yoast seo plug in...but not sure what to do with it. Where do I paste the code in the plug in?

Thanks,

I have an iPad which I use at home, and a computer which I also use at work. I probably set up my google account on a computer. Would the code be specific to one or the other...iPad or pc computer, as far as management access?

downliner Premium
which code are we talking about? If its the code to access your admin area on your blog then it will be the same on both and in that case all you need to remember is your WA username and password to access everything.
Reply
When I went to get the HTML code, it defaults to another screen which doesn't allow me to copy code.

Reply
Melh1015 Premium
This is different from google sitemap. Setting up google analytics is a tool so you can monitor your traffic etc. the sitemap is so google and the other search engine can crawl into your website so they can index it. Hope this helps.
Reply
gameon Premium
Thanks!!! That make sense. Sorry I mean what is the difference between Webmaster Tool and Sitemap?
Reply
Melh1015 Premium
I use both. The webmaster is only for google indexing. The sitemap tool is for google, yahoo and bing search engines I believe. Here is a good training you can check out - https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/how-to-set-up-google-authorship-verify-with-webmaster-tools-google-analytics

Good training, thank you much. However, what does Verifying SiteRubix Website with Google do to help your website out. And does site verification happen naturally with other sites outside of siterubix platform?
Reply
bothewebguy Premium
it works with any wordpress website, someone had asked about verifying their siterubix site here at WA, so I put this together. Verifying any website with google isa good thing especially if you are interested in how to improve the search engine positioning. webmaster tools are very helpful.
