Hi everyone!

Welcome to another edition of Shawn's tutorials!

Today I want to talk about keywords and the free WA keyword tool.

I know Jaaxy is owned by the founders of WA, and it is an awesome product second to none, but many people just starting out can not afford another bill until they start making money and that is why our awesome founders created and supply all of us with the free WA keyword tool.

I personally use this tool and this tool only in my keyword research and I rank daily on page one for my websites and my content. It does work well but you need to know how use it and you need to understand the basics in keyword research.

Lets start with keywords, what they are and how we use them.

A keyword or keyword phrase is a word or group of words people use when they are looking for something on the web.

Say I want to find a keyword tool on the web, I would type that into the search engine and it would display me all the results that are using that word or phrase.

Now, the goal is to be able to write your content and get it to rank on the first page of those results, as this is where people will find your content and you will get traffic to your website.

How do we do that?

Come with me and I will show you how I do it. :)

Hey guys thinking about low hanging fruit if a keyword had 10 se110tr 0qsr 10 actively power and what is PPC 9.5 would you use it I was thinking about it?
Reply
ChrisDE Premium
If it has only 10 average searches per month I personally would probably not spent the time working toward an article with that keyword.

However, if it is something that you see trending in the future (I bet fidget spinners had less than 10 average searches per month three years ago :-) ) than it may be worth it. But in that scenario that's just a bet you're taking there, not really an educated business decision!

Finally, if it is a topic you are passionate about and just starting out: Go ahead and write about it. Even if it won't lead to much traffic, YOU will have invested in your own training by working on your writing skills :-)

They merged with Jaaxy. As a premium member, you are automatically a Lite member of Jaaxy. Go to the dark blue box on the left navigator saying "Jaaxy". It is almost the same or could be a bit better than original keyword tool.

Thanks for your tutorial! This is very helpful.

I had presumed from other trainings that the competition value needs to be <100 to be considered a "low hanging fruit". But if it's <300, it should be ok to use, right?

Thanks!
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
300 is almost impossible to rank unless you have an established site and your content is outstanding. If not the case, stick to the 100/100 :)

So I know this training was done in March but when I type "help with payday loan" debt into Google it shows 292,000 results instead of the 198 shown in the screenshot.

Could it have increased that much or am I doing something wrong?

Hi Shawn
Thanks for info, but I am missing something.

In point 3, you say 'I would open up the box I got when I clicked view results and look at all of the content that comes in front of where my keyword or keyword phrase was ranked' I only get a box that says 'Competion QSR is xxx' You show a Google search, so do I go into Google and search there as well?

Do you know of any way to export the actual QSR number

Thanks for the help
Rose
Reply
jtaienao Premium
Hi Rose,
The number refers to the number of competition this particular keyword phrase has. What a Shawn does is he also uses google to search result of this particular keyword phrase. As you can see in the image there are 198 results showing keywords similiar to the one he has selected. I hope this helps clear things up for you.

Hi Shawn,

Could you please elaborate more on point #3?

"3. The last thing I look at is the actual competition that is ahead of the keyword or keyword phrase. I would open up the box I got when I clicked view results and look at all of the content that comes in front of where my keyword or keyword phrase was ranked."

What did you click to see "Page 2 of 198 results (0.45 seconds)? When I click on 'Competition' in WA Keyword Tool, I can only see a number and that's all.
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
What you would do is open an incognito web window and go to google search. Search the keyword you are wondering about and if it comes up in say page two of such and such results you would then want to look at all the content on page one that ranked better than the content that ranked page two.

That would be your competition.

The best that keyword did on content was page 2 which means other keywords ranked ahead of it that were tagged onto your keyword maybe by keyword phrase, etc... outranked it, thus page two of such and such results.
Make sense?

Hi Shawn, I'd really like to get the most out of this free tool. I have a couple of questions.

1. When I did exactly the same as you and used "Help With Payday Loan Debt" for a key word search - I got 267 searches not 12305 like you. Does this mean that the keyword is less searched now (6 months after you searched it?).

2. When you say "In this case everything ranked on page two and one would be my direct competition and my content must be better than what is there to out rank it." How do you find the low-hanging fruit keywords from knowing who the the competition are?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
Second question first, you work it backward. You find the low hanging fruit keyword then check out the page one traffic.
First question, you are correct. Less searches
Reply
jastewart Premium
Hello Shawn - thank you for those answers. I spent some time on the free tool after reading your training and came up with lists of LHF keywords for a few articles. I need to narrow them down further and your clarification of my second question will help me do that.

As for the first question/answer - that huge difference in searches is interesting and I think to compare search results every few months will be a great way to identify which older posts to re-promote, or which are truly evergreen content (or not), which are seasonal etc

Thank you.

Thanks Shawn for your wonderful training as always.
I have a question. In the blog roll page we keep on writing new articles where we may use new keywords every time we write an article.
In the pages where we have permanent articles, should we change the keywords or contents periodically? If we do not change content in those pages or do not introduce new keywords, it may fail in competition.
And if we need to change the article/keyword in fixed pages what is the desired periodicity of changing so?
I request you to share your experience.

I go through my posts and articles and see if I can improve upon them, sometimes it might do a new blog and link it to another page it is always good just to give your site a once over every now and then
Reply
kiliwia62 Premium
I too go periodically through my posts and articles and change it if I need to.
Sometimes I add a new paragraph when it is appropriate, sometimes I link a new written post to an old post because they have similar topics.
There are a few things one can do to stay on top. :)
Hope that helped a bit.

Are you are meaning the search results that show up on the browser?

Example: About 134,000,000 results (0.27 seconds)

If so you will have to go all the way to the last page and scroll to the bottom of it and it will give you the exact search results there.

Example of last page. You will find a similar paragraph as the following:

In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 368 already displayed.
If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.

I know it is a pain in the butt :(

Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the in-depth information on how to use the keyword tool. I tried to test on certain keywords to check on the number of competitors via the "View Result" link. Total competitors is below 300, so it's considered healthy. However, when i tried the exact search on the google page itself, there are 4 millions results returned? Why is there such big discrepancy?

Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
the lower the number the better the ranking chances are.
Reply
Labman Premium
Your maximum competition number should be 300. Less is better as you will be competing with a smaller number.

If you find a keyword with competition under 50 use it as the competition will be easily beat using the techniques here in the training.
Reply
SupportWorx Premium
THX!! I've been geared to look for 50 and under since I think that's the first thing I learned. It seems like 300 is kind of high? That's a lot of competing pages... right? -Alexx

Often 300 is doable with an established site that focuses on similar items throughout. The site rank will give your posts additional linking juice.

Je88 Premium
Competition means thr total no.of sites competing with your targeted keyword right?
Reply
Kipps Premium
Yes, But also think of other competitors using other keywords to promote the exact niche of yours. So people of same niche using same keywords and people with same niche using different keywords are all your competitors.
Reply
Je88 Premium
Just wondering. if searches is 50 but competition above 100 but less than 300.take this keyword or discard?I will discard because low searches yet pretty high competition. maybe I am wrong. What's your take for this? Thanks.
Reply
HasithaS Premium
I think the low competition you get, more traffic you will get too because the most important part is competition and try to catch unique keywords :) you are doing great so far!
Reply
Je88 Premium
Hmm. I see searches as demand.competition as supply.if over supply I won't jump in.If 50 searches 300 RESULTS I will shy away.but say if 100 or more searches with 50 or 100 results yes,I may consider.why not take the plunge you may ask..?because I still have yet to check my competition on first page.i will click one by one to see.if it's not my niche but just happened to target mine, and only one or two fierce competition, yes I take the shot. Wiki pedia amazon eBay I am not worried.even with e commerce stores. My only concern is the specialist writing tonnes of contents related to my topic. And how many on page one.
Best Way to investigate is click their sites menu one by one. If they sell other products non related to my niche I will not consider this site as my contender.
Choose a better fighting ground.thats what I mean.in fact analysing your competitor one By one is a Must in my opinion.we are taking part of their cake remember. It's not just merely looking at results and searches and traffic.
If page one is full of specialist websites then whatever results be it searches low competition I will not even want to rank that keyword. So means result is not everything. Keywords research has got more than it meets the eye. Would you go for any niche related to poker just an example. ?Tonnes of authorities page after page after page.
What's your take again here?Go after this niche?or discard?
Sorry for this long input. Rather learning finding keywords I think it's important to learn when to drop that keyword you are targeting.Thankz.

And to newbies keyword research can be a huge stumbling block if you are trying to fit in everything.you just want a rough gauge to shy away from the veterans out there as we can't compete with them yet as a newbie. Keyword planner in my opinion is simple enough.High traffic with low searches also does not mean you can rank well.if authirity sites and heavy ads dominated first 3pages then I will drop my targeted keyword in this case.Of course Content is important as well.common sense.just my humble opinion to share.Lastly, don't get stuck too long.Move on.Nothing can be perfect. Thanks Shawn, appreciate the information provided. I would like to ask if I have searched for a few long tail keywords that provide good traffic and less competition but the phrase is having repeating keywords, should I use it together or just choose the best? Eg. "How to write a content" & "Write a content for seo". Is it ok to use both in the same post?
Reply

I use it together because Google will find the keywords within the keywords so to speak, and sometimes many more. I have seen a site rank under 100 keywords in one series of articles simply by Google finding organic keywords within the natural content.

Do you mind to share with me what is Article Power, PPC Power & Dig means? Even though you focus to look on 3 things only to use WA Keyword Tool as mentioned above in your tutorial.

I love to understand well the WA Keyword Tool Function. Thanks for your help.
Reply

Sure, the Dig just means that if you click it the tool will dig deeper on the keyword it is associated with. Just a way of getting a bit farther into your keyword research.

Article power means exactly what it says, if you use that keyword in an article properly you should get the associated results.

PPC power has to do with advertising, it gives you the power of that keyword if you use it in your Pay Per Click campaign.

Have fun with it :)

Thanks for this training Shawn. And also, thanks for explaining these other features. I probably don't need to worry about this much, but when you say "get the associated results" for the Article Power score, can you expand on that? It looks like it is a 1-10 scale, but what does it mean to be closer to a 10?

Add your keyword or keyword phrase into your title and the first or second sentence in the first paragraph. Do this so it reads naturally and then just write the rest of your content without worrying about any keywords.

So basically I need to find a niche that doesn't have a lot of pages in the search result in Google?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
Well, yes and no. It depends on what kinds of competition the results show.
Reply
pribs Premium
A lot of it comes down to other metrics besides how many competing pages there are. That's one indicator, but if there are 100 authorities in your niche competing for the search term you've identified, there might as well be 100,000 competing sites. I would recommend downloading the MozBar extension for Chrome (free) and looking at the PA (page authority) for each result in Google - that can be a pretty good indicator when coupled with competing pages statistics.
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
Would the PA not be the rank on the page, or do you go to the actual site and check it?
Reply
pribs Premium
No, it wouldn't just be the rank of the page. PA is a metric coined by Moz representing Page Authority. It's not the only thing that determines rankings, but it's a pretty accurate way to find out if the top-ranking sites in a niche are beatable. It's one of the key metrics SEOs these days look at to determine whether or not they want to try and tackle a keyword or phrase for their (or their clients') sites.

How come the number that pops up for competition is different than when I do my own search in Google with quotes (this is always much higher. Hundreds of thousands, instead of hundreds)
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
When you use quotes you are checking on what is indexed in Google under that phrase, which can be huge. This does not reflect what the real competition is as most of them are so far down the list they are irreverent to what you are looking for. Trust me, the keyword numbers are real and correct..

PPC power is how high the keyword or phrase is ranked if you were to use it for a pay per click campaign

Likewise

The article power relates to how high the chances are of ranking an article.

I took me a while to graps this, but I think your saying high traffic on the WA keyword tool and under 300 within the results is best. Do you think it matters how many pages the results have because they can vary from 1 to 10?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
it does only in looking at anything that has ranked higher than the page showing will be your competition and you are going to try to out rank those. :)
Reply
Peter36 Premium
Question....what do you mean when you say "look at the actual competition that is ahead of the keyword or keyphrase"?
Reply
MageUnknown Premium
I believe they are still talking about the QSR, as suppose to just the straight up google search count.
Reply
Peter36 Premium
Thanks :)
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
If your keyword say ranks on page 2 of such and such search results, look at your competition that is ranking better than page 2, that will be what you will be wanting to outrank. :)

That help?
Reply
Peter36 Premium
Okay that's great, but how will I out rank them? Just by writing better content or inserting the keyword in strategic places? Thanks man :)
Reply

Both, but remember, content is king, and the best content wins every time. :)

I would like to know what each column tells me when I use the WA Keyword tool???
Reply
Michelle04 Premium
Searches: this is the number of monthly searches received on a particular keyword

Traffic: the number of clicks you could receive if you are on page 1 of Google

Competition: those competing against you with the same keyword

Article Power: how well your post or page will rank, the higher the number the better

PPC: this looks at paid adverts like Google Adwords

Dig: will do another search on that keyword to "dig" up more keywords for you
Reply
ednew Premium
under competition does that mean when I pull up my key word in Google and it says About 26,251 results. It means that i have 26,251 sites working against me?? Does that i should be looking for a number under 300?
Reply
Michelle04 Premium
Yes, 26,251 is outrageous and you need to look for under 300 for best results. :)

In step three could you clarify what you mean by "better"? What should I be looking for specifically to understand whether or not I should be able to outrank those sites?

Also, in step 2 does that second number you refer to represent the QSR when using Jaaxy? thank you
Reply
Labman Premium
Look for sites like Wikipedia and Amazon. Look at how many of the sites are affiliates and check the competition for the sites. https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/keyword-competition-analysis

It's me again.
I clicked the hyperlink that you sent with your last reply and looked at your webpage which I thought, by the way, was quite impressive and informative.
In the example that you point out the "true" end result for your search term was 266. If you wanted to further investigate these 266 competitive sites, how would you know exactly which ones they actually are?
Reply
Labman Premium
When you Google the term in quotation marks, Google will return only the exact match.
These would be the competition.
So you would search "best baby jogging stroller"
Reply
devraway Premium
Finally, I think it has clicked in...
I searched for your term "best baby jogging stroller" and found 4290 on 10 pages. Went to the last page and found it stated 42 results.
I then clicked on page 1...this is where it threw me off for when I clicked page 1 I noticed that it again stated 4290. This is where I thought the search started from scratch or all over again. I then scrolled down and the light finally turned on and noticed there were only 5 pages----not the original10. I finally realized Google did separate these 42.
Wow, I'm sure finding it quite challenging, it seems almost every inch of the way to learn, but it is sure personally gratifying when something finally makes sense.
It most definitely helps when good people like yourself help out. I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to get even this far on my own.
Thank again, Shawn!

I have a question though...
When I select Search Results I do receive a pop up of the Google page. But even if the revealed numbers of competing webpages indicates there would be more than 1 page I maximize the page but have no scrolling bar visible to investigate it further.
Do you know why this would be so?
Reply
Labman Premium
This is not actually a Google result but a screenshot of the last page of search results.
The WA tool goes to the last page for you. To duplicate it you would need to Google Search the term and then at the bottom page through to the last page.
I walked through the process here. http://onlinelabguy.com/google-lies

devraway Premium
Thank you for explaining this to me! You have come to my rescue once again.
The thought did occur to me whether it was only a screenshot, but it did also make me wonder if it was a problem with my computer or with the Keyword Tool itself.

Hello Shawn,

First off, thank you for sharing this training, I was unaware of it and André (Apache 1) pointed me to it following a question I posted

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/keyword-niche-and-market-research/does-anybody-know-how-the-keyword-tool-here-at-wa-get/comment/2878314

If you have the time, I would be very interested in finding out HOW the KWT gets the "Searches" and "Traffic" data.

Thus, if you have the time, disposition and knowledge on this I would very grateful if you could share it.

Have a nice weekend,

What I find interesting is just leaving out or adding a word like "in" can change search results. And phrasing also can change search results. Example Google Symptoms of diabeties, and then google diabetic symptoms, and you get different results
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
The results are different but Google will fish out both phrases and all phrases for that matter.
What many people do not realize is many times we rank good on natural keywords we do not even know we are using.

Shawn, great stuff. A quick question does that Page #_ of about matter? Or just the number after that?

"my content must be better than what is there to out rank it."

Isn't that a major key to the puzzle... how do we do that... or am I jumping ahead?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
There is an art to writing good content for the net.. I learned over at Street Articles.

Here is another great resource from Kyle:
https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/online-entrepreneur-certification-getting-started-level-1/quality-website-content

The page number will be where the keyword or keyword phrase you looked up is ranked. That is the highest it is ranking at the moment.
If it says page 2 then you need to look at page two and one to see your competition.
Reply
DoubleTap Premium
So the second number that you're looking for is actually the "198", which should be under 300... right, Shawn?
