Anyone that has a website must know how to use the File Manager that is part of all web hosting packages. While this tutorial uses the free hosting features offered by WA, all of the examples can be used for any web hosting package. The most common uses involve file and directory manipulation as well as uploading individual web pages or images. But the File Manager can be used for much more than that.

For example, one of the most common mistakes people make when trying to publish their site is to FTP their site to the wrong directory/folder. So the next time you publish your site and cannot get to it using your domain name, use the File Manager and make sure you FTP'd your site to the httpdocs folder. If you have a bad typo on your sales page, use the File Manager to make a quick fix to correct the spelling. The changes are instant and you don't need to go thru the FTP process for them to take effect.

A few of the major topics covered in here are:

  1. Accessing the Control Panel

  2. Accessing the File Manager

  3. Getting to Your Root Directory

  4. Delete A File

  5. Create a Recommends Directory

  6. Mask Your Affiliate ID using a Redirect

  7. Changing File/Directory Permissions

Screen shots are provided to help you along. And as always, be sure to back up your files before making any changes as well as after all your changes are made.

Tremblant -- Yeah, it really comes in handy. Be sure to back it up after all of your changes are made and download it to your pc so you have an up to date copy. Check out my SIG for my webhost. Been using them for about 8 years now. All individual IP addresses at no extra charge.

Maz - You are welcome. You can do a heck of a lot with the file manager. If you are not hosting at WA, most hosting companies allow you to zip/unzip files. This is a real quick way to upload/download your entire site.

Thanks, it answered some of my questions and challenges, especially I was finally able to change the title "home" of my web page to something else easily; what web hosting co. do you suggest?

Thanks for a great tutorial. I didn't realise that you could edit the html code in File Manager.
