INTRODUCTION

For making an impressive website it is necessary to include graphics and images in the pages. As suggested by various trainings on images there should be at least two images in a page. Also one image should contain Alt Tag, which helps in SEO. The guidelines can be seen in the following trainings.

Purpose of images in sites

Depending upon the length of a page one may add few more images. The purposes of the images are as follows:

1. To break monotony of reading long text and creating interest in the article/blog

2. Creating relevance to the subject matter. Understanding of any subject matter is enhanced when supported by images ( Visual effect).

3. It adds to SEO

Sources of image

It is an issue with everyone while building the site. The issue must be tackled with intelligence. Because you just cannot afford to use any image you find in the internet. This may land you into trouble related to intellectual property right.

There are many training available about the sources of free images in the WA site. In spite of the fact that it may be written as free on the general heading, one must specifically find out the details of rights written with every image.

I would specifically advocate using own images as far as possible. The tools for doing so are:

1. Own camera

2. MS Power Point

3. Paint

4. Print screen facility

I shall divide this process in certain categories:

Shoot the images by your camera and create your own database of images

Always keep your camera ready with you and shoot images wherever you find an opportunity. Occasional visits to the parks and natural surroundings can give you images of plants, flowers, leaves, fruits, vegetables, bushes, sky, water, buildings, crowd and what not. Use your imagination to create relevance to the contents of the site and shoot the photographs.

Unload the images on your laptop/PC. It is always better to classify the images under different heads creating different directories ready to be used wherever required.

The images stored can now be used at appropriate places after cropping and bringing into sizes. Moreover, at times, one may require combining the image with texts, backgrounds and shapes.

For doing so, there are many image processing softwares, like, Photoshop, Gimp or Canva. These softwares require some technical understanding and it takes time to get accustomed to those. The very old software ‘Paint’ becomes very handy for those. It is easy and quick. A combination of using PowerPoint and paint can help you to process images to your desired results easily. Also it helps you to develop basic understanding of managing images which can help you to use other softwares easily, later on.

For those who do not have (nor want to buy) PowerPoint software, there is a free open-source equivalent contained in the Open Office suite of tools. The Presentation tool has much of the same functionality as PowerPoint.

Information on the OpenOffice suite (word processor, spreadsheet, database, drawing program, formula, and presentation tool) can be found at:
