Before We Assign Keywords
Before we assign any keywords to pages/posts we must first look at how the page/post is performing fro a user experience standpoint AS WELL as just from an optimization one. As the user is the person here that we need to impress, right?
ASK YOUR SELF THESE
How well does that page/post already rank?
Ask yourself how well tat page/post matches up with user intent?
It is no good if all of your traffic bounces, it is not relevant! So does it?
If a page/post is ranking well, then use Google analytics and Search Console to see how well it is performing.
If the user engagement is low/poor, but similar pages perform better then the chances are you have the wrong keyword to attract traffic.
Take you chosen keyword and run it through a rank tracking tool to find out its rank. I use Jaxxy.
If you find that a particular page is ranking well then it might not JUST BE your SEO efforts paying off. The search engines may have found that particular page historically relevant to the search query.
You see, If it is the case that you find one that ranks well, then take a look at it and see if you can improve the copy (what you have written) and you may be able to add more resources. (Videos, pictures, graphs)
