Hello everyone and welcome to Shawn's Tutorials!

I have been asked by a few people how to set up an e-mail subscription for blogs. I use Google Feedburner myself.
It is very easy to set up and works quite well for updating your subscribers every time you add a blog post.
This tutorial will only cover using Feedburner for e-mail updates. There are other features with this service and feel free to explore them.

So lets get started.

First you will need a Google account. You can set one up here. Google accounts

Once you have this account set up you can now access your feedburner account Here

Once you get your Feedburner account set up you can burn your first feed. Go to your website and open up the blog page. This is the feed you will want to burn.

Copy your blog addy and put it in the Feedburner box and click next.

Interesting! Can you use the email addy's collected for anything else like maybe a promotional email?

As long as people know they have subscribed and you have given them a double opt-in you can provide them with content in their e-mail.

I see, does feedburner offer the double opt in automation?
Reply
Labman Premium
It has been too long since I used it, so I can't be sure.

I use Mailchimp for a similar function and this includes the double opt-in.
Reply
DDarragh Premium
I gotta booted out of mailchimp because of affiliate marketing, How do you get around that. All the autoresponders have that in their terms????
Reply
Labman Premium
Ah well, my site isn't focused on affiliate marketing.
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
To get around affiliate marketing guidelines, just be honest and state that you are using your mailing list to personally be in touch with your subscribers and yes, you will be offering them opportunities to get good deals on things you recommend, but you are not using this list strictly for affiliate marketing. Offer a few freebies like ebooks and such, and just use some of your daily emails for personal reasons to stay in touch with your list.
Last I knew, Feedburner does offer double opt-in, it should be in your set up preferences

Thanks Shawn
I'm gonna give it a try. It seems like a good a good way to automatically notify your list about new articles as well as collecting the addy's.
Any suggestions for a affordable email program besides that?
Thanks

I use Mad Mimi, there is also training on my training page on my profile that shows you how to extract the email lists from feedburner

OK sounds like a plan. I will try both and see how I do. Bookmarking the training!
Do you still use both?
How often do you recommend mailing to your list?

Hi Shawn,
How does one create a really professional sign up box for this. Mine is just the stock one I think, very plain. Should I outsource this? Where can I get this info. I'm starting to notice some really good and colourful sign up feedburner ones around the net.
Any help would be great. Thanks, Peter

I would think since you put the code into a widget you could just have one created through a place like this https://www.fiverr.com/
They would need the code from feedburner to work with and info on how you would want the box to look.
Here is some more info: http://amylynnandrews.com/feedburner-signup-edits/

When someone subscribes to email they are sent an email automatically of a new post? is this correct ? I don't need to spend any money/

Hi, Shawn, it's Peggy again. I did get the feed to work but only on comments from my site, not the post. Still not sure what's going on. It will not work with http://justhonestincome.com/-feed.

This is just plain weird, I am trying to figure it out for you
Reply

Yeah, Shawn. I put in http://justhonestincome.com/wealthy-affiliate-review-my-opinion from my browser, it comes up with 2 choices. I pick the first one as suggested and I get the screen that says didn't work, see image. It will take my comments from this post, but not the post. I want visitors to sign up to receive new post added. I'm lost!!!

Check your theme to make sure you do not have a conflict. If you can not get this working try using the free version of MadMimi, set it up and use the RSS feature. i am using that on my bootcamp site and it works perfectly
Reply

How do I check to see if my theme will work with this?
Reply

I am not sure on that, but if you have followed all the directions it might now be. Would you like to have me try to set it up for you? I would need to get into your site to do it

I literally spent an hour trying to figure out how to set this up until I came across your training. Thank you! I finally got it set up! Are you supposed to burn each article you write?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
No, it will pick it up and send a notice out to everyone on the list. It is usually sent out the next morning that the article was published.

I get people subscribing to my site like almost everyday is this the same thing as that or is this something completely different? I get emails from wordpress that says new user registration on your site then it lists their name and email.

I never was sure if I should be adding these names and emails to a list or what I should do with them. I have like 60 subscribers to my site do you know anything about this Shawn?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Hm. New user added? What are they added as, ie what's their role? If they are a subscriber, then it could be people subscribing to add comments. Are you getting a lot of comments? If not, it could be spam bots registering, but to be honest, I've never received a 'new user' notification unless I've physically gone into the "user" tab and added people to make guest blog posts or do work on the blog.

Let me know what the results are. I'm curious.
Reply
scottdogg187 Premium
They are listed as a subscriber and I have gotten 3 in 1 day before. This has me puzzled maybe they are just registering to leave a spam comment cause I get hundreds of them. It says a new user registration so I thought maybe they were subscribing to my content, but i guess we shall see.
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
You might have the comments set on subscribers only. Thus, when they try to comment they are prompted to subscribe. Notice on this screenshot that my box is unchecked for comments. http://d.pr/i/NH3C Check yours. You will find these settings under dashboard > settings > discussion
Reply
scottdogg187 Premium
No I don't have the must be registered and logged in to comment box checked do you know of any other reason they could be registering to my site as a new user?
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
Yes, they could be spammers. Are they commenting under the names they are using to register?
Reply
scottdogg187 Premium
That I don't know I haven't looked into it that much I just deleted like 10 spam comments just now. I will have to check this out the next time I get a spam comment and see if it matches up or not
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
I did acquire a few new users on my old site. I deleted them as soon as I found them, but I never did figure out where they came from. Maybe we should start a discussion in the classroom for feedback on this.
Reply
scottdogg187 Premium
So do you think this is a bad thing then I just figured they subscribed for my content but maybe I should delete them. That is a good idea to start a discussion about this I would love to get some feedback on this issue

I will get one going in the morning. This is a question I also meant to follow up on but it got lost along the way. Keep and eye out in the AM, I will get the ball rolling. :)
Reply
Does this replace regular email campaigns? If I were to use Mad Mimi or even Aweber, do I take the Feedburner email account down?
Reply
nathaniell Premium
I spent a morning the other day annoying everyone in chat trying to figure this out. Feedburner sends people your blog posts automatically by email. Your email campaign is what you set up with Madmi, and this is dictated by however you want the campaign to run.

RSS on the other hand, requires a 'reader'. It is essentially the same thing as Feedburner, but with Feedburner, you can capture a subscribers email address.

So to answer your question, you can have both an email campaign AND a Feedburner signup.

Hope this helps!
Reply
It does. Thanks. One time I had a "reader" called RSS Owl. I could never figure the thing out. That was in 2004 though.
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
That is correct. I made this training for those who were not yet ready for an e mail campaign but wanted to give e mail services to their followers of their blogs. The other part of the training shows you how to capture their e mail addresses from feedburner when the time comes to start your e mail campaign.

Hi Shawn, I've added a feedburner subscription to my blog, but when I click the link, it takes an EXTREMELY long time to pull up the feedburner page where they opt in. I'm worried that this 2-3 second wait could make them change their mind or click away. Is it like that for you too?

The way I have it set up is that I took the link URL and used it to make a clickable image in the sidebar. I'm not sure if that's a contributing factor to the slow connection time.

Thanks!
Reply
Shawn Martin Premium
I think that might be it. I got the code for the dign up on the Feedburner site myself
Reply
nathaniell Premium
Does yours take a long time to load as well?

Nice writeup... Is there a list of subscribed emails, or is that kept private in the feedburner system? It would be great to own the list and be able to port it to another email list program.

Thank you Shawn. Besides your training here I went into YouTube and found this, Oh, yah this is not an affiliate link of any kind and I am not promoting anything. I listened to what this guy said to do.

If you do this there are 3 videos and I would not recommend this to anyone who is not used to using widgets. Listen to them first and follow what he says. Also, if you have a 'testing site" use it on there first. I actually used this on one of my sites because I am a widget freak!

I will be running more test to see how this can look professional. But, I figure customers are used to getting email messages from different autoresponders and since this is through Google they might even feel more comfortable.

Here are the videos in YouTube that I watched. >>>How to Fully Install Feedburner on wordpress. Start with video 1. I hope this works for others.
Best Wishes You You

I just got through going through all of the activation processes under the Email subscription. Then I after I went to my website like I was a customer, lol, I checked on my email "chicklet" and it took me to the sign up. After checking that I did, activate my subscription and it took me to a welcome page. Now with this I will be able to send emails to any customers. I will have to go back and "tweek" my own welcome page as Feedburner has one that I used. But, for people who don't want to spend money on aweber until they are making a profit this is a good way to go! So, this is valuable training that you have put here if people will continue with it. I did not use JetPack. I did this all through a text widget.

Thank you again for this training.
Best Wishes to You

I am using the subscribe feature in Jetpack but I haven't found where to access the mail addresses. Does this create a place where you can extract the subscribers addresses?

Shawn Martin Premium
You know I am not sure Craig. I will check that out tonight and post the answer. If not, I will look for a program that might do that.

After you activate your prescription it takes you to another page. Click on the Email Subscriptions and you will be given some options as to what you want. I am able to capture email addresses. I did a run through with the subscriptions. I am working on more of this today. But, there is one step further than what is done above.
