Google are a relatively young company, yet they are already MASSIVE. How did they do this?
They sold their soul to the devil for overnight success like Led Zeppelin did right? Well...no.
What they did was figure out how to reach internet users as early as possible. People use the internet for many, many things. Shopping, Retailing, Reading, Gaming, Watching TV/Movies, Researching, Communicating, Learning.
But the one thing that everybody does before they do any of that? Searching.
By creating a top quality search engine, Google put themselves in a brilliant position on the internet. They have many products now, images, videos, google docs, gmail, adsense, analytics, and so on, yet their core basic product that everyone sees before they see the other products is google search.
Are they universal? Are they in every home? Well, if you want to know the answer, maybe you can search for it. Better yet, you can "Google it".

Interesting post. A little change in perspective can take you a long way.
You can use the idea (enlarge the pool of buyers, change the pool of buyers without changing the product, with getting it universal being the best) every day.
I mean, you can sell a treadmill as an exercise machine to get you in shape; you can sell it to women to get trimmer legs. It's still a treadmill.
But it is best if you pick things that can be wanted by everybody.
