The money is in the list, right?

I know you have likely heard this statement before, but this is the "almost" truth. The money actually isn't in the list, the money is in the following. In the same way as the Top Twitter or Facebook pages have hugely engaged followings, you can accomplish the same through email marketing.

The art of making an offer in exchange for an email address...and then building a relationship with these people.

The purpose of this tutorial is to walk you through the procedure, from the offer, the technology, to the building of the relationships, and finally generating the revenue.

What is Email Marketing?

Unlike traditional forms of advertising, email marketing gives you the ability to invest once to get the clients contact information, then gives you the ability to connect with this person again, and again, and again....potentially for a lifetime. Instead of paying for a paid or message over and over again, you only have to get the initial subscription and then you can contact the person for FREE, for potentially an infinite amount of time!

You are likely to subscribe to many email marketing campaigns. For example, here is an example "opt-in" form (or the offer) we have used in the past on the Wealthy Affiliate affiliate homepage:

When people sign-up to this form on our homepage, it gives us the ability to contact them again and again, not only with promotions, but also to offer value and insight into the Internet marketing industry.

Email marketing is actually quite simple when broken down. It works like this...

(1) You ask for permission from people to join your mailing list in exchange for something (newsletter, guide, software, etc).

(2) They share their email address and name with you.

(3) You then have permission to offer them information and ultimately marketing promotions.

Not only do you have the opportunity to connect to this person once, as long as you keep a good standing relationship with them you can continue contacting them over and over again.

Whereas the traditional type of advertising, even Pay-Per-Click (PPC) or Facebook ads only allow you to contact someone once in order to recoup the money spent on advertising, you now have multiple chances to generate returns. But you can use these paid channels to build your list! (hint hint)

Below is an outline of the "flow" of email marketing:

Website Visitor ----> gives permission in exchange for something ------> Joins YOUR LIST------> YOU offer info and promotions
------> YOU MAKE $$$$$

Email marketing is the single most effective way of marketing online. There are three factors that contribute to this.

(1) Pay once, contact forever

Now this is really cool. Unlike your typically PPC or article marketing campaign, with the incorporation of email marketing you have the opportunity to contact people over and over again. You essentially work to get the lead once (the initial cost, whether it is time or money), then you can contact them over and over again...for FREE.

Let's look at an example. Say you pay $0.50 to get someone to your page via a pay-per-click campaign. The person comes, doesn't buy anything and leaves. You never get to see this person again.

Say you had a form (like the one mentioned above) on your page that allowed people to sign-up to your email list in exchange for something

(2) Can be applied to any niche

One thing that email marketing has on some other marketing methods is that it can be done within any niches. Sure, you can make money within most niches with other marketing techniques, but email marketing allows you to cross-promote relevant products to a niche as you have on going communication with your subscribers.

If someone is interested in weight loss, they may be interested in a wide variety of items (cooking utensils, workout gear, etc). If someone is interested in a bird feeder, they are likely interested in bird feed, photography of birds, bird watching, etc. Having an email list gives you this opportunity. Any industry, any niche...you can build a list within it!

(3) Automated

You know the old Ronco commercial slogan "set it and forget it"? Well, this is appropriate for the email marketing world. Once you get a system in place that is converting visitors into leads, and leads into customers, it is all about scaling about your campaign (getting more traffic). Once you get traffic converting within your sequence, it will always convert.

There are tools (that we will be discussing) that allow you to automate the whole process. Email marketing can become hands free and once you have a formula in place that yields a positive ROI, you having an automated "money making" system in place!

There are 3 steps to a successful email marketing campaign we are going to be discussing in detail within this training.

(1) Creating an irresistible initial offer
(2) Building trust through relationships
(3) Generating revenue through offers

In order to all of this, you are going to need to understand how relationships work, and this is going to be the first thing I discuss.

I signed up for Aweber and tried to install a signup form on my website but it didn't work. I already have a sign up form on my word press site that came with my social media plugin. Should I keep the sign up form from the plugin or should I install the one from Aweber?

@RICH. Premium
You can get an embed code from Aweber itself or use one of the many plugins that support Aweber https://wordpress.org/plugins/search/aweber+optin/

Choices are endless depending on what you are trying to promote. Watch or read a training, turn that into a report and give it away for free when they sign up with their email. I use Aweber and have a sign up box on all of my sites. Take this training for example, you could make it into a tutorial in your own words. Then put a sign up form on your site saying - Learn the Art of Email Marketing, enter your name and email for your free copy. Set up your follow up in aweber so that when they sign up it automatically emails it to them right away.

I noticed you suggested Aweber. Some folks suggest I use TrafficWave and then others suggest I use HostThenProfit that has its own autoresponder. I am so confused.

My personal recommendation is not to use them. You are going to end up wasting a lot of time, money and probably some gray hairs if you choose to go the free route. If you are going to get into email marketing, spend the small investment on an autoresponder service like Aweber.

Thanks for this great piece of valuable educative presentation on email marketing. However, I will like to understand the pros and cons of using free autoresponders. There are many sites offering free autoresponder services especially if someone is on a limited budget. Thanks.

@Jave27 - I do recommend getting on it. It will take the pressure off getting consistent traffic if you have a solid relationship with your list (as you will be able to get traffic whenever you like through an email).

@mhamilt - As long as you are consistent (with your specific pen name) and you are able to connect with people through your pen name. Many people have pen names, many famous people do. Pharma industry has changed and ITL is a little outdated now, but many of the principles still apply.

@joniki - There is no such thing as a free lunch. You have to let these people go as they will waste all of your time. Some people are just not worth your time and are looking for a handout. You need to recognize this...helping people is one thing, getting an email a day (without compensation) is another thing. You have to focus on building, scaling and improving.

@Labman - Why would you create a promotional product...why not focus on getting the traffic, building a relationship and then finding the best products that already exist for that traffic. Far less work than adding a full product to manage on top of everything.

While reading your tutorial (Good coverage of the subject) my mind was racing. It is time for me to start a list. Creating a promotional product needs to come first though. Meanwhile, I was noticing that collecting e-mail addresses is the key to starting out. I notice that an easy way to do this is to introduce people to Pinterest. If they are not yet connected ask for their e-mail and send them an invite. Voila, a start to your list. Oh, and don't forget to put the e-mail address in a secure location.

Kyle -

Here is something we all have run across while running lists. What do you do with that person that wants to be taught EVERYTHING directly from you in one on one emails.

I agree spending time engaging with your list and being available is extremely important, however, there is a line you cross with the people that want to engage in emails all day long day after day.

your thoughts?

Great course. I've been thinking about email marketing for a while and just finished reading Inside the List (which is also great). I must admit though how your attitudes towards pharmaceuticals have changed though :-). I have a question relating to pen names. Several of my campaigns use pen names and I would do email marketing based on those names? What do you do when you're in several industries? Mark.

I am glad this training helped get the imaginative juices flowing. These principles can actually be applied to much more beyond just email marketing, but understanding these before entering any campaign and understand that relationships are what leads to "customers" is power in itself.

For me, this is probably the most valuable class I have taken so far! Most of the classes have just been educational; knowledge I should have, things I have to know. This class plants seeds in my mind and waters my imagination with all the ways I can offer value that gives people a real Reason to Want to have a Relationships with Me. For the first time, I am actually excited to create my SteppingStonesToDragon website and express all the fun and exciting ways Dragon can make a difference in people's Lives. Kyle, I am so jazzed to start seeing a way to share that knowledge!!!

This tutorial is at least five times better than the last one I read about building a list. However there are a few things I would like to say about it. 1. I am not a frustrated newbie--matter of fact--quite the opposite. I am upbeat and ready to get it done! 2. Sometimes it is very important to tell a person what they need to hear rather than what they want to hear. So here we go--There are numerous grammatical errors in this writing. One of the statements in this tutorial is that you need to go back through your AWeber message and check it for errors. I am trying to say this in a humorous way! Next it is very obvious that this tutorial is somewhat out of date because AWeber has apparently updated its site since this writing. In some cases this situation presents quite a challenge and often times some guesswork that can be difficult to correct. The tutorial needs to be brought up do date and match the AWeber material. At the new monthly rate of subscription, I would think professionalism and attention to detail would become I higher level of priority. Lastly, there are a number of places in this tutorial that speak of the screenshots to the right which....are apparently no longer there; probably because of the need for updating that I already mentioned. In closing I would like to add....I came to this tutorial seeking the answer to 2 questions. Most of the writing in this tutorial and the information required on AWeber assumes that you already have a website...would this be a correct assumption?? And finally I came here from the turn-key feeder sites...my question is, if I were to use those to get a jump start whose mailing list would I be building, yours or mine?
