Transfer a Domain Name, Move a Website

You can transfer a domain name and you can move a website. You can't move a domain name and you can't transfer a website.

Don't confuse the two.

I've seen this question asked a number of times. "How do I transfer my website to Wealthy Affiliate?"

And what they really want to know is "How do I move my website to Wealthy Affiliate?" Or they want to know "How do I transfer my domain name to Wealthy Affiliate?"

Your domain name and your website are two totally separate and distinct thingies (technical term). They don't even have to be at the same place.

Coming Up

What is a Domain Name?

What is a Website?

Transfer a Domain Name

Move a Website

Whoopsy... I wish I had seen this before... I have transferred an "old" domain name that was gathering dust from Shopify to WA and was wondering why I could not see my site here yet...

I guess I did not do the "move my website" step... does this mean that I lost everything and need to start again from scratch? Or is there still a way to recover what I had?

I'm not sure if you can have a Shopify store at Wealthy Affiliate, Nathalie. Contact Site Support, they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Thanks a lot, Marion. You are right. The Site Support people were super nice and patient with me about this. I learned that Shopify does not use WordPress and that I have to build my site up from scratch. It's okay. I was not doing anything with it anyway... I shall just park my domain name here until I decide what to do with it. :-)

Have a beautiful evening and all the best to you and your loved ones for 2019.

Hi Marion. Question for you.

I purchased a domain name on the wealthy affiliate site. However, since then a friend of mine, who is professional web designer, created a website for me. I would like to transfer my domain name to his website.

How would I do this?

Thanks for your help!!
Reply

I would be asking the question the other way around, Maya. How do you move your new website to your domain name? Your professional web designer should be able to do that for you as part of his brief.

so i would have to get the web designer to get it done ; aye ?

Definitely not, Joe. Maya mentioned that she had a web designer friend who created a website for her, you can do it yourself.

Hello Marion, I have an odd issue.
A while back I became a member here then decided to take a break and about a month ago, I decided to come back to WA. I could not remember my login details so created a new account.

My monthly membership became due today under my NEW WA ACCOUNT. Here begins my problem... I got a new laptop so decided to log in and pay for my membership. Well somehow I logged into my old account and paid my membership then realized what happened.
Under my new account, I have a few websites that I have been working on. Mostly I am concerned with my two paid websites and one of them just got indexed in google.
Can I move my other websites over here to this WA profile and somehow move my profile posts as well?
I am sad too about losing the people from my profile.

PLEASE TELL ME THERE IS A SAFE AND EASY WAY TO MERGE BOTH MY PROFILES TOGETHER WHILE REMAINING UNDER THIS PROFILE.

THANKS A TON

Whichever registrar you transfer your domain name to will charge you for an extra year which is tacked on to the registration period.

If you have a domain name without a website on it then all you need to do is to point the DNS (domain name servers) to WA to build a website on WA's hosting.

I think you can move the website to WA's hosting but I would check with Site Support to make sure. Give them a list of the plugins you're using so they can check if they are all supported here. They'll be able to give you instructions on backing up your website and uploading the files to facilitate the move.

Hi Marion; I have a wordpress web page with Siteground as my DNS. I still am confused as how to or if I need to transfer over to WA. I am thinking that transferring is what I need to make it all run better. I also have a lot of plugins and am sure that most of them I do not need but have paid for. Is there someone who can look at them and see what can be canceled or what I really need to keep if I transfer over? I am not a techie at all.

Hi Marion,

Very comprehensive and very clear. Well done!

Just one question: When I move a website from HostGator to WA, but leave the Domain Name where it is for now (with GoDaddy). Does the website I move into WA incur any fees, or is it covered under the 25 allowance that Premium Membership provides?

I have 5 or 6 sites that I built before joining WA. I like the setup here and would like to (eventually) transfer all my domain names from GoDaddy to WA (as they come up for renewal) and to immediately move the site content from being hosted at HostGator to being hosted at WA.

But I don't want incur any additional fees for moving the hosting. I understand I will have to pay WA for each domain name that I transfer into their domain name management service, but that's not a problem, as I will save even more because the GoDaddy Domain fees seem to be higher than WA.

So, as I said, my main concern is that I do not incur additional fees when I move the HOSTING of my sites from HostGator to WA.

Thanks for your help. You obviously have a good understanding of all this because you were able to put together such a clear presentation of the data.

Thanks
Neil

Contact Site Support Ed. You don't need to transfer the domain name to get your site hosted at GoDaddy again. Leave the registration where it is and change the nameservers (DNS) to point to GoDaddy. Then you should be able to access the site again.

To change the hosting you need to backup your entire website files, folders and database. Again Site Support can give you instructions.

Hi Marion, I hope this message finds you well. Question??? I have a domain set up with godaddy, however I don't pay them for hosting my site. I built my site on WA and its ready to go,and I have already set up an affiliate relationship with Amazon. Now I'm guessing I want to keep my site hosted in WA, and unless I am paying for hosting on Godaddy, I should not transfer my site from WA to Godaddy?.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I'm not quite sure I'm understanding you correctly. Correct me if I've got this wrong.

1) You've registered a domain name through GoDaddy.
2) You've pointed the domain name servers (DNS) to Wealthy Affiliate
3) You've built a website on the domain name using WA hosting.
4) Your website is live on the internet and you've established an affiliate relationship with Amazon
5) You want to keep your website hosted at WA

If my assumptions are correct then you don't need to do anything at the moment. When your domain name registration is getting near the renewal time you may want to transfer the domain name registration to WA because it's cheaper and it includes whois privacy.

If I've got this wrong please let me know.

This article was very helpful and cleared up some questions related to domain name registrars, website, and transferring a domain. I think i will have to refer back to it once I get started.

Registering a domain name, and then building the site all within WA is very straight forward. Once you pay for domain name, give it some time to actually kick in. I got an error message right away that the registration failed, so I tripped over my own feet getting upset. Then after about an hour, I was able to use the domain name. Give a a try. You don'even necessarily have to get to a certain point in your training
Good luck to.

I just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly...I I MOVE my website with content from Wordpress to WA, i will have to create a new domain name for it. if I decide to TRANSFER my domain name, the content or website will not come with it. So I need to decide what is more important..the domain name or the content(website).

Is this correct?
Reply
Labman Premium
You will backup the content on your current site (I use All In One WP Migration for this) and move the hosting to WA. Then restore your content on the new site.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
You can do both, move the website and transfer the domain name. It's just not a good idea to do them both at the same time. You don't have to buy a new domain name.

Your first step is to backup your website using WP Clone or a similar backup plugin. I don't recommend All In One WP Migration for this as if your website is bigger than 512 MB (and most are) then you have to pay for the premium version of the plugin to restore the website. After you've done the backup contact Site Support here at WA and they will help you with the move and tell you when to change the DNS (Domain Name Servers).

Only after you've moved the website should you transfer the domain name. That doesn't even need to be done until it's closer to the time for renewal.
Reply
JoanaHL Premium
So if I migrate my website without transferring the domain name, how does that impact a visitor? My domain is LivingBoldbyJoana.com, so if someone types that in, will they still see my content even though I moved the website to be hosted by WA? Or Will I have to create a temporary free domain name until I do the transfer?

Sorry, still trying to grasp the concept. Thank you for your patience!
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, you migrate the website and change the nameservers to point to WA hosting.

The nameservers tell everyone on the internet where to find the files and folders that make up your website. So you point the nameservers to WA then when someone types in your domain name in their browser they are taken to wherever your nameservers are pointing.

If you contact your hosting provider, they'll walk you thru it.

You can, also, go to the site and go to the "manager" page. Scroll to find info.

Or type in "transfer domain name" into the search field on the hosting site and this can give you data as to what to do.

If I move my website to a new domain name and upon expiry of the old domain name, will I lose that email address?

I have signed up for affiliate programs and social media accounts using my current domain name - which I'm thinking of moving off - I don't want to have to start all over again with my sign-ups.

Currently, I have a branded .org domain and I want to use a .com but if it's going to mean re-registering with my affiliate programs and updating my Social Media content I may give it second thoughts.

So jackie@old.org gets redirected to jackie@new.com

Can someone transfer a website(domain) from another company and move it all to WA for Free or do they have to pay for the WA domain name and hosting or what?

Also when I personally put in a domain name transfer from namecheap. I had to pay for my domain again? Is that normal or should it have just transferred. I followed all the steps received the code from namecheap and everything but, when I went to transfer here I had to pay for my domain again.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
There's no need to transfer the domain name to have your website hosted at Wealthy Affiliate. If it's a new domain name then all you need to do is change the nameservers.

When you transfer an existing domain name to another registrar they ALL charge for an additional year of registration. I waited until the domain name was getting nearer the time for renewal before transferring the registration to WA.

If you have any content on an existing website then contact Site Support for instructions on backing up and moving it to WA's hosting. Hosting is included as part of your premium membership.

There's no financial benefit in waiting for an approaching domain expiration to do a transfer. When you pay the new registrar's initial fee, the current expiration date for the domain gets extended by one full year. You don't lose any of the remaining time you've paid for on the registration.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Yes, the only financial benefit is that you may have more money to spend if you wait. Most people have a lot of expenses when they're just starting out so postponing a payment may be just what they need.

And sometimes we realize that the domain name we've chosen is not as good as we thought it was when we first bought it.
Reply
BobBarr Premium
Good point on the timing of expenses. I've seen some people, though, recommend waiting so that they won't lose the rest of the registration period. That's just not the case.

I guess 'moving a website' is what I need to do. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
The first step is to backup your websites using a plugin such as WP Clone then contact Site Support to help with moving them to WA.

When it gets a bit closer to the renewal date of your domain names you can transfer the registration of your domain names to WA and have everything under the one 'roof'.

Your domain name is registered until September 25, 2018 so there's no need to transfer the registration of your domain name. And it's not registered at WA. You should get an email for renewal next July or August unless you've got it set up to auto-renew.

You can use WA hosting for a PDF file. I've just set one up on one of my test websites which is hosted here.

Hi Marion, thank you for your most welcome response, to this and my other questions.

I am not a computer technocrat (age 74, and relatively new to all of this, 6 years),

I am in a position whereby I will need some help in moving my primary site from the other host to WA.

I think my biggest fear is that I do some thing wrong, and I mess-up the whole thing. I have in the past tried to follow, what appeared to be simple instruction, and still managed to make a 'pig's ear' of it.

Oh, how I wish that I had had the opportunity to learn earlier, but my work intensity prevented this.

I want to move this site, a rather primitive attempt, but of a subject that is close to my heart.

In moving this site, I will be able to correct the working failures made on my part, and completely overhaul the site using the excellent WA. systems and support.

In doing this I will not have to go back and forth, trying to do it that way, and I can have the site here to work on.

I have a further three WP. sites with this host, they, I would consider moving at a later date, unless, me being speculative, one can bulk move all my WP. sites.

That would leave my other, a Joomla site, which in itself poses extra problems, that could stay.

If you can offer me some practical support, I tried the as you suggested, Wealthy Affiliate Technical Site Support, but it took me back to member support, and you were on top of the moving sites from, to WA. support

Thanks again for all of your support,

Tom.

I would suggest you move the least important website first then you'll know how it's done. The first step is to use WP Clone to back up the site Then contact Site Support and ask them to help with the move. They respond pretty quick.

Then you need to change the nameservers (DNS) to point to WA. But Site Support will explain how to do that.

There are not any files I really need to keep from the website as I have not developed the site yet. Can I just transfer the domain and just leave the files and start over here? Will that cause any issues? If I choose to move the developed website from WA back to godaddy will there be an issue on transferring the domain back and moving the website files? I have already transferred the domain to WA hosting. Thanks

Domain transfers can only happen after 60 days have passed from the last one. I would recommend just changing the nameservers to your Godaddy hosting account if you wanted to switch back over to Godaddy at some point.

Backing up and restoring/moving your WordPress website is pretty easy once you know how. Marion has some great training on how to do it.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
If you have already changed the nameservers to WA then it should be easy to start over from scratch and build out your website.

Make sure to cancel your hosting account at GoDaddy. You can leave the domain name registered there and transfer it to WA when it's almost due for renewal.

Moving a website from one hosting company to another can be easy or very difficult. The bigger the website the more complex and time consuming it becomes. Websites under 2GB in size can usually be moved using WP Clone. Bigger sites need FTP and database access.

I offer a professional website moving service for those who don't want to tackle it themselves.

I am a 68-year old still working full time as an executive assistant and wanted to try to start something online which I could do to supplement my income when I finally retire. Vibrant Web asked me what I was interested in for a website. I love animals, so I chose a website trying to sell pet supplies.

I see there is a lot of training available here so I'd like to get started with that because I sort of jumped in with both feet without doing the research so I have a lot to learn. I'm a bit overwhelmed, so could use a suggestion on where to start first.

I'd like to see if I can transfer my website and let WA host it but don't feel knowlegeable enough to do on my own. Don't know anything about plugins.

I'd like to learn what kinds of websites other people here have and how they make money online.

My site is monetized by an Ebay store, Amazon Google AdSense, and some affiliate programs I signed up with through Shareasale. My site has been active since February, but to date have only made one sale, which is very discouraging.

I also really need to learn how to drive traffic to my site.

Sorry to bore you with all of this, but would appreciate any advice you could give me.

Your first step is to back up your entire website and save it on your computer Next step is to contact Site Support and ask them to help with moving the website's contents to Wealthy Affiliate.

And you'll need to point the DNS (Domain Name Servers) to WA's servers . This is done wherever you bought the domain name.

And then you'll need to follow the training using the green button on the left hand side, "Get Started Here". To learn how to manage your own website.

The rest will come as you progress through the lessons.

Think of your domain name in terms of a telephone book. Your domain name is tied to your Internet Protocol (IP) address. An IP address is expressed as a numerical label like 107.23.16.6.

It is easy to remember the domain name wealthyaffiliate.com. It is much harder to remember the WA IP address of 107.23.16.6.

So happy to be able to do it, because everything is working so well on the Tab front and the English base now......
