Track Outbound, Download & Email Click with Google Analytics and gaAddons
Google Analytics is great for tracking how customers get to your site but it tells you nothing about how customers leave your site, which is often much more important. You need to know whether they left by clicking one of your affiliate links, or by clicking on an email link, or by downloading something from your site if you have downloadable content. And you need to know which ones are most popular so you can figure out why and improve your pages.
The classic method was to add an "onclick" event to every link on every page that would send information back to Google for tracking. But this is a major pain to do because you have to manually edit every link on every page. Too much work!
Google can't help you as it stands, but by adding a simple script, gaAddons.js developed by Stéphane Hamel at immeria.com, you can have complete exit tracking. The script automatically connects to every link on a page and uses Google Analytics to send back the information as Events in the Content section of Analytics. All the standard Analytics tools are available for interpreting the Events. Setup up is simple.
