PAGE 1 – How to Create a Drop Down Menu

PAGE 2 – What do thePages and Posts SEO Details mean

PAGE 3 – Explanation of the Meta Tags in the All In One SEO Pack

PAGE 4 – Which Meta Tags should you fill in and which ones stay blank

In this Part 2 of my training tutorial called The Basics of WordPress, I will first be explaining how to create a drop down menu for your website pages and then I will explain about different aspects of the All In One SEO Pack.

CREATING A DROP DOWN MENU

The first thing to do is create the page you want in the drop down menu. You would do this like every other page you create, except there is one extra step before clicking on the Blue Publish button. This is an important step if you want to create the drop down menu.

In the picture above you will see the Page Attribute section on the right side of the WordPress editor. This is how it should look when not creating a drop down menu. For this example I will be creating a page called “How to Start a Home Internet Business” and I will have it be in a drop down menu off of my “Getting Started” page.

So before I go and click on Publish I want to go to the Page Attribute section and change the field that says No Parent to my Getting Started page, as seen in the above image. The Parent Page is always the page at the very top of the drop down menu. Once I have that set, I will go ahead and click Publish.

Then I will immediately go to my WordPress dashboard and in the left side menu I will point to the word “Appearance” and then in the pop up menu I will click on “Menus” which will display my Menu Structure screen. On the left side of that screen will be a listing of the most recently added Pages, see image below.

I check the box next to my newly published page and I click on “Add to Menu” which will place it at the very bottom of all pages I have saved to my Menu Structure. I then go to the very bottom of my Menu Structure, which is immediately to the right, and click/hold/drag my new page up under the “Getting Started” Parent Page.

Before I release the mouse button I will slightly indent the placement of the page to the right of the Parent Page. All pages that appear in the drop down should be slightly indented to the right of the Parent Page as seen in the below image.

Then once the page has been placed in the position you desire, whether it be first, second, or whichever order under the Parent Page, you will click on “Save Menu” and then go to your website and refresh the page. Your page should now appear in the drop down menu, see below image.

NEXT UP = Why do the Page and Post SEO Details say No…?

Flexoffers is wanting to verify my web site in one two ways. Insert a meta tag or HTML file. I have tried and tried inserting the meta tag but no go. I was told to go appearance, editor, Theme header and inset meta tag right after <head> however it just shows a bunch of theme jargon. There is no word<head> on any of my post or pages. It also says no 404 found. Can anyone help here or possibly show me the way to do the HTML function. I have fought with this for 2 days now.

I am not a big fan of that particular theme. I do not think it looks nice and I have heard complaints about it functionality. Try switching themes. Are you sure you clicked on the Save button after you set up in the menus in Appearance > Menus? Also some themes require that you click on the "Include this page in lists of pages" under the exclude pages section in your editor (you will see to the right if you scroll down a little). Let me know if that helps.
Reply
Elijah1916 Premium
Just include all pages now, and updated, still not showing as drop down menu. I saw a site with the same menu, and I will ask the person first before I proceed further. Thank you so much I do appreciate.

I just installed the same theme you are using on your website on my test site rubix website and I was able to create a drop down menu under my About Robert page, see link below.

http://thebestfreewebsitebuilder.siterubix.com

Are you sure you...
1) Set the Parent Page in the WP editor and clicked Publish or Update
2) Then go to Appearance -> Menus in WP dashboard
3) Then add recent page to menu
4) Then to your right within the Menu Structure, click-hold-drag the new page up under the Parent Page and indent it to the right just under the Parent Page like shown in the image above?
Reply
Elijah1916 Premium
All these are done easily but they are not showing in the site itself just. the theme pages are showing. Your posts are showing on the sides. I want a type that when you click on the top menu, you can see other topics under that top menu. Thank you.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Posts will always show on the sides and never in a drop down.

Look at my About Robert page in the top right menu. Do you see the little down arrow next to it? Point to it and you will see the drop down menu appear with a Privacy Policy page.

Reply

No. Categories apply to Posts only and you cannot do drop downs with Posts, only Pages
Reply
Elijah1916 Premium
I have only created my contents on pages, having watched a tutorial this morning, about it. I find that easier for me to do. I just watched Bloggroll tutorial now, and it is saying the same thing. All are carried out. I can see the drop down now on my side bar, sort of. I will keep on trying until I sort it out. I really appreciate your help. Please look at my site again, do you know why I still have admin, and edit even if I view the site directly on Google?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Your website is currently set up with a static front/home page and not the default blog roll. Eventually you are going to need a page called "Blog" to have an area for all of your Posts to go.

Posts are important because they are helpful in boosting your website rankings. This is another reason that Kyle will have you write Posts more so than pages.

With your current set up your pages are also showing up in your left side bar. This should not be because pages need to only appear in the top menu. When you have a static front/home page, your sidebar is used for your Blog Posts. Redundant menus are not a good thing for rankings.

Also my pages title show on the side bar, and find it difficult to delete them Surely they must not be shown on the two sides. Thanks a million.

ANY ADVICE ON THIS PLEASE. ha ha. i just saw i wrote all in a capital letters. not shouting- I promise, just forgot my caps on. lol cheers Erica :-)

petcharitiesdubai-animalservices.com I took off the sub menus under 'horses'. but I left the 'dog park' one on as an example. thanks a million. I tried to do a category drop down menu under horses, then I would make the pages and group them into the categories. but I cant seem to wrap my head around that one yet. I am playing around with it and figuring it out slowly. I have created different categories for horse related stuff and made a custom menu. but when I add the widget to create the drop down category, I can't seem to add my categories to that drop down list..... if I cant figure it out then I will just make adjustments to my main menus and maybe add horses to the top and then do a drop down menu for all the categories the way you explained it. cheers Erica :-)
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
OK I see what you mean and it is exactly what I thought. Drop downs in sidebar widgets will mainly NOT be actual drop downs because the side bar doesn't afford the real estate area to have a true drop down like you can have along the top main menu. At best what a widget can do is what you see with the indented post title.

I try to put all of my important aticles, especially ones with many out bound links as pages and not posts. Then if I should want to add some relevant content to the page I could either create another page as a drop down under it or create a post and then interlink to the page from the post. Google loves when websites do that.

JUST A THOUGHT...

If you are doing all of these tests to see how you can make your website look better, have you considered doing these tests on a free test site rubix website?

I have one of the 25 free site rubix websites we premium members get set up as a test website with the same theme as my live website. This way I can test and expeiment with different plugins, widgets, & customizations without having to distub my live website. I created training on it if you wish to see it. Link below.

Thanks for creating this tutorial! For your lesson 1, I searched high and low on google on how to create a drop-down menu for my theme. But to no avail. Then, lo and behold, I found out by myself when I selected the Parent Page option under Page Attributes on Edit Page!

I have a question. I notice that All in One SEO doesn't seem to automatically populate Title and Desciption on Posts like it does on Pages. Any advice for this? Should I manually add it in then?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
Are you sure? If you see the preview snippet filled out just above the Title Tag then it is filling it out. But you could always change the Description by manually typing it up.

I just realized that I have never used the "page attribute" feature. I have been adding my pages to the menu the way you have described, but I have been skipping the "page attribute - parent page" section. My menu seems to be working fine.

So, should I be going back to fill out the Page Attributes section?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
I have found that some themes seem to work fine without using it. So if your website is working well without using the parent page feature, then no need to change it now.

Thank you for checking it out. Now l have 'Program Reviews' as the main category, then l created sub-categories under it 'Pyramid Scheme' - 7 posts 'MLM Program' - 1 post and so forth.

Quick question- A page is something that stays the same right( a basic idea) whereas, a post is what I put my keywords in. For instance, a page named recipes, then a post on my blog roll about how to cook chicken is where I decide the keyword i using and I put the keyword in the title of post and a few times in the post/ article?
Reply

HI
Pages and posts are two different things - this training may help
Reply
Missa3 Premium
Yes, a page stays the same if you want it that way, and is often part of your menu, but you could also set it up to be the basis of your blog roll. Both a page and a post should have keywords, and the rest of what you said is correct.

Hi Robert !
... great information - thank you once again.

Can you please tell me why I will often get a better ranking from "tagged" url's or posts - It looks like using TAGS (on right side in Wordpress editor) is really important now in regard to ranking, and not simply an "on-site" attribute.

I see when checking page rank in Jaaxy often times the tag ranks higher than the straight keyword (sometimes they are one in the same). Googles search result displays the url w/ the tag.

I have been using them all along so I'm happy about that, but wondering what's going on and why. Looks like categories are being displayed too sometimes. If that is so, we were never taught the extent of it's importance but rather a way to help our visitors search within our sites.
Hahaha - might be another good post topic!

Thanks
... and what about Google's Tag Manager?
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
I always set the categories and tags for posts that appear on the right side of the WP editor. They are not just important for internal navigation but also help with SEO.

Remember, a better UX (User Experience) will also lead to better SEO. Post tags, though similar to keywords, are always just as important if not more than the targeted keywords.

I believe someone has already done training on this because I remember reading about it prior to setting up mine.
Reply
gmegs Premium
Yeah - thanks Robert!
... I never saw that training, and Kyle never emphasized it so I'm pretty happy I did it. I remember looking into his "scam" website he uses as a teaching site and seeing he was ranking pretty quickly - I checked his source code and saw it was his tags and not his keywords that he was ranking on - very interesting!
... going to go back and make sure I have good Category titles listed on-site, and appropriate tags.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
The training wasn't done by Kyle. James (jaweda2k) did one on categories last year. See below.

Thanks Robert - just read it. That was good.
... I think my initial search way back when revolved around "tags", if I remember correctly ... I couldn't find anything substantial at the time.

Thanks again - with gratitude

One thing to consider is that Tags are just more specific Categories. So if you find the best words to use for Categories the same should be used with Tags.

Thank you for clarifying. I was told that I absolutely had to manually fill in the (Meta) Title and Description section of All in One SEO by another member and not leave the area in "grey" writing. So I spent all day yesterday going through all of my posts and pages to do this. I only made it about half way through and was going to do the rest today. Now I am not sure if I should even bother with this...
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
It is up to you but it is not necessary. I hardly ever do the title because my titles are mainly keywords. As for the Descriptions, I will only do these if I cannot be as descriptive in the first 140 characters of my content or if I feel I can come up with a more compelling snippet.
Reply
TanjaRita Premium
Ok, that is exactly how I was doing things. But then I wrote a question (https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/search-engine-optimization/am-i-doing-something-wrong-or-do-i-need-to-be-more-patient) and some of the answers I received led me to believe I have been doing things wrong all this time.

I always have my keywords in the title. And like you said, the few times I cannot naturally fit them into the first 160 characters, I go and manually edit the description tag.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
You were/are doing things right. As you can see in the image I provided of the All In One SEO Pack area under the WP editor, the text in the title and description fields are supposed to be light gray.

I read some of those answers you received on your blog and a couple are flat out wrong, especially what Robert-A wrote.

I figured since in the training Kyle said to not make changes in the All In One SEO sections he must know what he is talking about. But then I was assured by some members that this is not correct (as you saw in the answers I received). I am starting to figure out whose responses I will follow and whose I will take with a grain of salt.

Thank you again for this training and for taking the time to respond to all of my comments/questions!

You are welcome. For the most part, Kyle knows best, which is where most of my training is based off of.
