Hey! What's up guys!

In this guide I'm going to show you how to set up your WordPress website. I'm hoping this will be a one stop guide for setting up your new website. Whether you're a complete newbie, or a WordPress veteran, I'm hoping this will help you remember the basic steps

I'm going to assume you have already purchased your domain name, set up the Domain NameServers (DNS) pointing towards your host and have WordPress installed on your website. If you are a member of Wealthy Affiliate, you can install WordPress easily by using WordPress Express.

We are going to start with a blank website.

We are going to go over the basic structure of setting up a new website. This will include setting up a few pages:

  • Home Page
  • Blog
  • Privacy Policy
  • Contact Me
  • About Me

Also, we'll go over some of the essential plugins needed for a new website, and we'll go over how to set them up. These will include:

  • Akismet
  • All in One SEO Pack
  • Google XML Sitemaps
  • WordPress Ping Optimizer
  • Sharaholics
  • Contact Buddy

Save you from looking up different guides for each, you'll be able to select which guide you want from the page selection section at the top.

Pleased don't be alarmed by that disclaimer. That's just there so IF a fault should occur, you can't go blaming me. If something does go wrong, it's always fixable and at this stage of site creation/development, not the end of the world.

So, without further ado... LET'S GET STARTED!

****EDIT****

April, 6th 2015: Version 4.0 is now available for download! You can now download this as a PDF over on my site. Check it out right... HERE. All new plugins and completely up to date for 2015! I'll change the guide here on WA shortly.

Hi Helpful Dude...and others...do we really need to copy/paste that enormous list above my head and put it under "Update Services" ? This is an older post, and I didn't do that before in previous sites....
Thanks, Cheryl

Some of his info is actually out of date so I wouldn't pay too much attention to it.

this is way out of date, I see someone in the classrooms recommending it but it's not for newbies, and we are not allowed link off to our sites the way he is doing either...

Pfff, I have another question, as I am moving forward: I have an XML Sitemap option already built in the All in one SEO, it is not a separate plugin, and it seems already activated, attached pic at the bottom. In january 2018, do we still have to install the sitemap like Helpful Dude shows here, or this one that I have will suffice?
Reply
TCUK Premium
if you have the XML sitemap setup in All In ONE SEO and you submit the sitemap url to your Google Console and all is fine in there, no you don't need to install an additional plug in for the same purpose.

I didn't read this whole article but you also do not need Akismet if you host your site here with WA

Hey guys, girls and helpful dudes,
I have to ask you something before I begin plunging into this experiment:
1. What is this "DNS pointing to my host" thing that Dude is talking about, and was it covered in the courses somehwere? I have no idea of it or how to do it.
2. I log into the dashboard of my site from Site Manager, as learned, but I thought we already have WordPress installed there, as pointed by Kyle I always update newest versions of it. Should I also download or install something else as a WA member, like that WordPress Express that Dude is talking about in the second paragraph?
Thank you so much for your time, stay blessed and true!
Reply
rmhester30 Premium
Yes he covers DNS (domain name server) in the course and how to set the name servers up for your hosting company. If you bought your website through WA then you shouldn’t have to do anything else, at least I don’t think you do. However, if you are like me and happen to already own a domain name/website then you will have to take extra steps. You will have to change the settings of your name servers to point from whatever place you are basically to WA. I believe if you just search name server on WA you can pull up more info. Hopefully I wasn’t too confusing.
Reply
nathaniell Premium
1. If you are still using the free Siterubix, you don't have to worry about DNS. Same thing if you buy your .com domain from WA. The DNS thing is only if you buy a domain from a registrar that's not WA.

2. Even you are using the free Siterubix site, the "guts" of the website are still WordPress, which needs to be updated. You don't have to download or install anything related to WordPress, it's already running. Just needs to be updated from time to time in your dashboard.

Let me know if you have any more questions about this!

Kyle posted this when Akismet changed their policies and moved WA members to WP Shield. Since this happened WA has upgraded their hosting and added spam protection on the hosting so neither is required.

You, sir, are a helpful dude indeed and in far more than name.

This sitemap issue has been bugging me for ages. I've tried numerous approaches without success but this one does the trick.

For anyone else reading this, I think the plugin's been updated slightly and so when you are in settings and looking at the XML-Sitemap Generator, you won't see an option to build a sitemap now. Instead, you'll see a hyperlink to notify search engines about your sitemap and you should click on that.

Thanks again, dude! And have a happy new year.

That string of characters "google10b0e5aa3995a00a.html" is inside the head section of the page but not enclosed within any html tags. It doesn't go there. If a plugin put it there, then it made a mistake. That's all I know.

Never had any API issues. Check the FAQs on their website or try SumoMe which is what I use now. I've written a post on how you can set SumoMe up over here: http://www.thatmarketingdude.com/making-your-site-go-viral-with-sumome

A benefit of SumoMe is that it's mobile friendly.

Thanks dude I've tried contextly and shareaholics and had problems with API on both of them
Reply
There must be some sort of conflict with either your theme or another plugin you have on your website.
Reply
IanC1 Premium
Are your sites hosted on WA ?. I'm having the same issue with a couple of plugins, all relating to API apparently you can't use plugins that make timed outbound connections to remote servers on the wealthy affiliate platform.
Reply
No I don't host my websites with WA purely because of the restrictions Kyle and Carson have put in place. These restrictions are great if you're a complete beginner because it means you're way less likely to break your website. Whereas I'm a little more knowledgable (learning from mistakes) so I need something that's a little more robust for the things I'm doing with my sites

I think that's what I'm seeing now but as I'm only just starting out I'll probably just stick it out until I get a bit more experience. Thanks for the help though much appreciated.

Hi Carol.

I use SumoMe now. I have a post on my personal site that's about to be published showing people how to set that up. I believe that's scheduled to go live on Monday.

I've got one more plugin to write a walkthrough for and then I'll be updating this whole guide for 2015. I won't be putting it online here at WA though because of duplicate content rules but I will be linking to it.

Have you tried installing sharaholics?

So you're hosting your website with WA? Is your website a .siterubix.com site or is it on your own domain?

I host my websites with SiteGround and I didn't have any issues updating the list. My guess is that WA is stopping the update from happening. Most likely because it isn't necessary anymore

Yes you should have a contact page. Not only is it pretty much standard to have these forms that it would now seem weird if there wasn't one but it also gives the visitor a more personal feeling towards you and the website. Knowing they can contact you personally if they needed/wanted to can only help with trust and loyalty.

Some people have more button options either through their theme, or they have added a plugin for this.

First, try hitting the toggle button to see if more buttons appear.

If not and you want more editor buttons, consider adding a plugin.

Reply
MmmmBalf Premium
Keywords can be used in either static pages or blog posts, it makes no difference to Google whether it's a post or page (Google treats both as just a url, it doesn't distinguish between them.) Posts to the blog roll are still always on your site, they just may be in the archive. They're still searchable and part of your overall site content.
Reply
Bryant88 Premium
Ok, so all pages are "static" except for your blog roll, this configuration makes sense to me, however I've also come across information suggesting that depending on your niche/market, a blog roll as your homepage may be more advantageous. From what I've read/viewed I'm assuming there are other structural hybrids which allow you to insert/link post in various ways. Am I on the right track?
Reply
JohnV Premium
I believe that one good reason to set your blog as homepage, is that when readers return, they immediately see your latest fresh content.
Regards and good luck
Reply
It's entirely up to you if you want your homepage to show as a blogroll or static.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I would like to have a mix of the two, but I'll need to find a theme that allows for that.

If you made your Contact Page as a page, not a post, you can set the social buttons to be on posts only and then add the shortcode to the pages you want them to appear on.

To turn off comments, on the wordpress dashboard, go to pages. Then "quick edit" your contact page and check the box that says "disable comments"

Poof... all gone ;)

You need to make sure you submit the correct URL of your sitemap. The plugin tells you want the URL is so copy and paste that into your webmasters tools.

There is a guide on how to set up Google Anayltics: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/adding-google-analytics-to-a-wordpress-blog

There are several ways to do it. With an anayltics plugin, with a plugin that allows you just to add your code, or by manually inserting the code into the theme itself. The guide above will show you the easiest way.

Hope it helps!

I've been told the button isn't working at the moment. You'll manually have to put the shortcode on the page you want the form to appear on. The shortcode is:

[contactbuddy]

Add that to the page and you should be all set.

Hey Luke! Excellent tutorial.. thank you! ~)

I have a few of questions if i may..

1) After successfully installing the contact form for on my contact page, i noticed that i still have the "Leave a Reply" section underneath it (which appears on each of my pages).. how can i remove that just from the contact page?

2) Any recommendations on sourcing content for the Privacy Page?

3) Any advice or other tutorials that you would recommend i check out next as i now move into adding content?

Thanks again for your awesome contribution ~)
Reply
Your welcome!

To answer your questions:

1. Go to your list of pages from the dashboard and click "quick edit" under the page that is your contact page. A little menu will drop down and in there will be a tick box called "Allow Comments"... Just untick that :)

2. This privacy policy generator seems to be the most popular here: http://www.freeprivacypolicy.com/ give that a go... Seems like you get a decent privacy policy at the end of it.

3. The best thing to do is follow bootcamp. One of the tasks you have to do is come up with 3 different topics for your site and then list 10 different things you could write about for each topic. That'll give you 30+ posts you could then write for your site!

:D

Hi Luke, I'm a bit confused with the All in One SEO plugin. I have it installed and set up properly but I'm not sure if I should be adding anything into the sections for "Title" "Meta descripiton" and "Keywords" sections that appears below every page/post or should I just leave if all blank and let the plugin do it all for me?

What do you do?

Thanks in advance
Reply
You don't have to feel these out if you didn't want to. When your content is found in the SERP's it will use the title of the page as the titles, the start of your post as the description and then the keyword section isn't used.

However, If you wanted to change what was seen in the SERPs for that post/page, then fill out those sections. The keyword part is only to see how often the keyword appears in the post/page... This will give you a keyword density rating. As long as the keyword your aiming to rank with is the the title and the paragraph, I wouldn't worry about that.

So it's up to you if you want to fill it in or not... Personally I'd at least do the meta description and change it to something that will get that person to your post/page to read what's on it.

Hope that helps!
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
Thanks Luke, I've been adding the Title and meta description because I haven't always liked the one that AIOSEO gave me and like you said to make it more apealling for someone to click through to read the post or page.

The keyword section doesn't give me the density it just allows me to add more keywords? I'm not using the professional version is that bit only with the prro version?

I'm also adding Catagories and tags in the standard WP part do I need to do that if I'm using AIOSEO plugin?
Reply
Categories and tags are a way for your to group your posts that are of a similar topic. I'd continue using them as they're not really anything to do with AIOSEO... Just help Google crawl for your sites and for your visitors to find related content.

I wouldn't worry about the keyword section. I don't know about the pro version, I'm using a different plugin called SEO for Wordpress by Joost de Valk (or Volk... Can never remember!). I don't show that plugin in this guide as it's a little more confusing to use and set up... Whereas AIOSEO is relatively straight forward in comparison.
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
I remember using the Joost one on a clients site before and that was pretty much automatic once it was set up although the All in One is very straight forward I don't think it's that automated although it is easy to get the page titles and meta descriptions to show exactly what I want them to

Which would you recommend I am not a complete starter at SEO and can normally craft my titles and first paragraphs to be SEO friendly but I've never used plusins to do it for me are they really worth having?
Reply
Plugins to make things easier for those who are blessed with coding knowledge. So I'd say if you can do it yourself, go for it. But if you want an easier way of doing it, go with the Joost plugin... It's the most popular one out there.
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
Thanks Mate, I suppose I would need to do all the SEO again if I change to Joost but There's only 6 posts and 7 pages on it so far so better to change it now!

I'm not over happy with AIOSEO

Thanks again for your time and feedback
Reply
I'm pretty sure the Joost plugin has an import feature that imports all your settings from AIOSEO into their plugin... So you won't have to redo anything, maybe just check to make sure things are looking ok from your sites front end.

When I did that a problem occurred with my page titles. All I had to do was tick the "force rewrites" under the titles section of the plugin and it sorted it out
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
Ah cool so should I add the joost plugin first and import the AIOSEO settings before de-activating and deleting the All in One?
Reply
Yes, Import the settings then disable the AIOSEO. That's how I did it anyway.
Reply
Alan Hocking Premium
Cool that worked a treat! I'll have a proper play with it tonight. One last question I see it has XML Sitemaps included so do I need the Google XML sitemaps plugin now or not?

I try to keep my plugins down to a bare minimum so as not to cause any load problems or slow the site down
Reply
Nope. The Joost plugin includes the sitemap and the robot meta plugins... So neither of those 2 are needed if you've installed everything from this guide
