Introduction to Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search engine optimization techniques have been around for years, and successful marketers have been able to achieve top rankings for specific keywords. You can drive significant traffic to your website if you get a top ranking within the "natural" search engine results and it costs you absolutely nothing. This is why there is so much competition in the natural listings within the major search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN.

How can you get a chunk of the SEO pie? Maybe you're just starting out with your first website, how can you get your site listed in the search engines and compete with the BIG boys that have thousands of listings throughout the Internet?

Getting a top listing under a keyword or phrase that is relevant to your web page can really increase the exposure that your page receives. Bottom line is that you can get a lot of highly relevant traffic, and we all know that relevant traffic means...more money in your pocket!

We also need to make sure that it is understood that SEO is not something that we as webmasters or Internet Marketers have full control over. You can make your page very targeted and use all of the best SEO techniques that you want and still not get listed. SEO is a game of chance, but this tutorial will give you an upper hand and provide you with as much "control" as possible. There are many factors and variables that are taken into consideration when a search engine ranks your site in their page index. The techniques we are going to talk about will give you the best possible chance of getting listed, but nothing is guaranteed in the SEO world.

I have a question and hope someone can answer. Has anyone heard of Attracta SEO service? If so, are they any good at what they do?
Reply
judebanks Premium
Yes, I used the free service before I transferred my site to WA. I never used their paid service.

If you follow the WA SEO training, you should not need them, and your site will be submitted automatically via your All in one SEO plugin if you activate the sitemap feature of the plugin.

However, if your domain is new, it won't hurt to use the free checklist service Attracta provides. It does get your sites listed in the 4 major search engines, and they do not bother you with emails, just a reminder to update your checklist and once in a while offer more of their services.

Of course you can always use your Webmaster Tools account to get your pages and posts indexed a little more quickly.

Thanks Jude! I am using the check list they provide. I don't think there is any way I'm going to pay the money they want because that is a lot of money especially when you're just starting out. Kind of makes you wonder though if it actually works?

Has this technique changed since the Penguin and Panda updates? Is it still working well, or are there any new tweaks as of this writing?

Also, if i can know what's the best approach (400 or 300) to target if there is a limit? Is that a limit or is it like no buddy can get a position in search engines if we don't find keywords below 400 view results, anyway I am going through it, the training is perfectly fine its just that i am a little overwhelmed and need my buddies hand backs!

How do you suppose we link together on multi-level website. I don't understand the steps? What is the procedure, which page to link with which page? Buddies have each other's back where is mine? I am missing the plot!

Note that if your own site is using WordPress, you can notify ping-o-matic and related sites automatically every time you make a new post. Go to your Dashboard -> Settings -> Writing, then read the instructions in the "Update Services" section.

Thanks again for the tip on using my.yahoo.com's RSS trick. That's pretty slick, and I now remember reading this article years ago, but I completely forgot about that step in "helping out" the search engines. :-)

So I take it that I should have my blog done with focused keyword content and links before I do this? There is just so much information missing in this process it's just too much trail and error in a course that is supposed to teach you step by step, I want to talk to Kyle and Carson about this. This is start to look like a bunch of &!#$%*!!! to me.

Im stuck at adding the RSS feed URL, yahoo is telling me to add a valid URL, what is the valid URL? Where is the valid URL? What am I doing wrong? Also the tutorial needs to be updated to reflect the current look on blogger's site feed page, it's kind of confusing trying to figure things out as it is without having to figure out and interpret a different page layouts.

I also am getting the "please add a valid url" message when I attempt to follow the instructions in Carson's tutorial. I posted a question on the forum, but have not received much in the way of response so far, but I think I found another way to do it.

Once you have a Blogger blog, open it (view blog)and click on the RSS symbol on the right of the url address. you will get a drop down with two options:

Subscribe to (your blog name)-Atom'
Subscribe to (your blog name)-RSS'

I am not sure what the difference is, but Carson's example address ends with /atom.xml., so I did that one, and just for good measure, I did the other one too. When you click on one of the above options you get a dropdown that says something to the effect of "subscribe to Yahoo" as well as other options. Take the yahoo opyion, and the feed is added to your "My Yahoo" page. Hopefully this is the same end result that we could not get done by following the tutorial.

I've had Yahoo! ever since I've had an email address and I can honestly say that Yahoo! sucks. If something can go wrong, it will on Yahoo! No explanation, no help, just the error message no matter what I try to paste there. Typical Yahoo. If anyone has a suggestion, please help.

Hello All. I figured out the setting to get the Blogger - Yahoo feed working.
You can find all the info here: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/blogger/thread?tid=41264a1e0e47a743&hl=en

Here's the setup:
1. On the Blogger "Settings/Site Feed" page - Blog Post Feed = Full, Blog Comment Feed = Full, Per-Post Comment Feeds = Full. the others are left blank.

2. On Yahoo. Go to your FrontPage, click the Add Content tab, click the Add RSS Feed link then paste this link:

http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

Then click the Add button and you should get a "Your Successful" reply.

Good Luck

Yahoo will not allow you to add your Blog URL unless you are using the classic template on your blog. Check to make sure that you are, change it if you are not, then add the code exactly as Carson has shown above to Yahoo RSS feeds like this: http://your blog name.blogspot.com/atom.xml.

Don't forget the last dot after xml, because it does exist. Carson's just not showing it up there.
