Introduction to Product Development

If you have mastered the affiliate side of things and comprehend what drives affiliates to achieve sales, it may be time for you to become a merchant and create your own product to be sold online. Although there have been successful merchants who have never been “affiliates”, if you have a working knowledge of how an affiliate likes to be treated and the resources they need, you will find it much easier to build an army of them. If you are new to Internet Marketing, you should not begin by creating your own product.

Hi Carson. I found this article very interesting, especially your last line. Should not begin by creating your own product. I do have to say that I joined WA thinking I can learn the skills to help me build my own product. However after being here for a while now, I'm now focusing on affiliate work first. Thanks.

It seems to me that a person would want to become proficient as an affiliate before wanting to find affiliates to help sell their products. Like any other job, you need to start at the bottom and work your way up. Developing my own product my be possible in the future for me, I'll not rule anything our, but I feel I need to get comfortable as an affiliate before I can even think about that.

If I were to rearrange these criteria, I'd put quality on number 6. Regarding number 8. - With the rise of online sales, so is the rise of courier and postal activities. Downloadable products are mostly software, e-Books, graphics or graphics services. Expand your horizons and think of something that could fit a small box or pouch..something easily mailable or couriered.

If you have an existing product and customers and want to expand your business, then go build a website. If you are good at SEO, you could probably survive and thrive. Incorporating the affiliate method of doing things or simply linking your site's literature with different affiate schemes could multiply your business many times over, doing minimal work.

OK, just to get this straight..
A) As an affiliate you promote someone elses product(s) of your choice, as part of their affiliate programme, promoting it through your own website with reviews, blog etc. and they give you commission.

B) Then, once you know the ropes, a whole other thing is to create your OWN product, get it onto a site, and get it onto an affiliate NETWORK where other people just like you in A) are then selling it for you too and receive commission from you.

is that it?

not really b), we never HAVE to create our own products, it is an option

a) is correct and there is a lot of money to be made right there

it's true advanced people may sell their own stuff for sure, with our without affiliate options

Both are correct. B however is not taught at WA. It is also not necessary to develop your own product to sell but obviously it is very beneficial if you do.

I always teach my students that "We can't do things that we don't know how to do." , and "We can't make decisions about things that we don't know or think about."

Now that I know, thanks to you, I can get started. Lot's of work to do!! Thank you Carson!!

Love the wisdom you impart to students! I resonate with that a great deal, and have also found that the content on this site gets me on board and ready to get started. Hopefully we can make the best of it.

My husband & I found our product from necessity. We had been been auto detailer's for many years, then, we moved to detailing RV's (motor homes) exclusively. The hardest part of detailing an RV is waxing it. The typical "car" wax was hard to remove, it didn't last long & it never really made the RV's shine. My husband spent many hours pouring over the internet looking at all kinds of different waxes and found a company that made a wax for RV's that, once applied, made the RV shine like new, it didn't require any polishing (removing) & it lasted about 6 - 9 months. We used it for a couple of years but had some issues with it and some complaints. Because of this we thought we could produce our own version, but better & cheaper. At first we only used it for our own detailing company to make sure it would last (it lasts 12 months) and we didn't get any complaints. We been using our own product for many years now and people LOVE it!! We now have a company called "Supershine RV & Boat Gloss Restorer" and our sales increase every year. We even have a couple of RV detailers who use it (outside our area) and keep coming back.

This is a wealth of information plus guidance. WA has reduce the
time for me to search for info, so that I can use most of my time
to learn how to set up an online business and become successful. Thumbs up. I am loving it, and I am learning a lot about being an affiliate and setting up my online business.

I dabbled in the alibaba arena for while when I was selling items on eBay last decade, and it was pretty profitable, but I lot of worry because I was inexperienced. I think now, I am much for capable of doing something maybe private-white label. I just have to find that product, and make enough in affiliate commissions to make that a reality. Thanks for a great article.

This assumes that you create a product that is a service or software for which you can charge. Thus, you want to drive people to your site so that they may purchase the product, not so much that they may click on an affiliate like you've placed on your site.

So, say, I develop a product that allows people to listening to their on-line music or music stored on their computer or media server through headphones in such a wave as to prevent the music levels from being hazardous to their hearing, yet that doesn't suck the life out of the music. That I sell from my site.. At the same time, I could have affiliate inks to Amazon for some of the earphones that my product supports.

Is this scenario reasonable?

Sound like a plan to me... the internet gives you the potential for 2 billion shoppers. The key is finding a product or service that many will want, then sell it at a price point that is low enough that millions will spend the money.

You got the plan, go for it!.

I agree. It is obvious that you are speaking from wisdom and experience. As for myself, I don't think I am ready for my own product. However, I have a much deeper understanding, as to, what having your own product is. I feel rescued out from a possible future of a premature decision.

With great gratitude,
Paula

I just began reading this, but I have a question, for me, who is an artist and I already create my own product (my art) but I am quite new to the whole online marketing (I have had online commissions before, not sure if that counts), would creating my own product here still not be recommended just yet? Or does creating a product here in WA mean something else?

Affiliate marketing in general means commissions paid due to sales of products by other companies or vendors etc. but that doesn't stop individual product owner themselves to apply these techniques to generate extra sales.

As far as answering the question about buying the premium package for 19 dollars, Roulasaad, my dear, that was the first month special price!! After that, the price is what, I think, 47 or 49 a month? I can't remember, what I was charged for the second month right now, but, one or the other! Oh, and by the way, did you know darling, we have an Expert around that can help us if we ever are in need of any help, so, don't be afraid to ask!! lol Hey, It is very nice to meet you! Ok, so for example if my niche was goats, because that is what I'm passionate about, but I've published a children's book about them, only 1 so far, I shouldn't put the book on my website yet? I mean it's not like it's going to make me record sales yet until I learn how to promote it and have others to go with it. So should I wait to add it to my web site until I'm making money from my affiliate programs?

Really interesting article, I really enjoyed it. I'm just curious however in relation to tour comment,"Product development should not be your first step to making money online" because I feel I may have a product or two already, but have never really thought much on Affiliate marketing till last week. So in your opinion, what do you think would be the quickest and easiest way to make a few quid online, as my personal circumstances have changed recently and I'm now trying to generate income from laptop as much as possible. Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If you are selling your own product then another significant advantage of Clickbank is that they handle all of the sales tax for you regardless of the country the product is being sold into. The business model they use is that when a purchase is made it is CB that buys the product from you and then sells it directly to the original purchaser, so they act as an agent. This greatly simplifies the accounting process. From this perspective the commission they take is actually worthwhile. I do not know of any other affiliate site that currently works in this way.

Hello! I'm just starting out and I may want to take this tutorial later. Does WA have something like "favorites" where I can save training and topics that I'm interested in for later viewing? I realize I can just save to my search engine favorites, but wondered if there is something internal for such purposes. Thanks!

My have a service I offer on my website. The pricing of 7 and 9 I find interesting and new. A nice refresher course and useful for those starting out over all. I will have to test the 7 and 9 thing at a later date but will give it a try starting out with.

My opinion on this topic is everyone starting out should start as an affiliate marketer to get their feet wet, it takes time to learn how to promote any product no matter how big its demand. Once you learn how to promote and are successful, possibly then you can consider developing your own product.

Just my opinion from my own experience online

I agree with you. I'm new to affiliate marketing and to me the most important thing is learning how to promote a product successfully. I would much rather be an affiliate marketer rather than have my own product and have to worry about getting the product to my customer, products that are returned for one reason or another and customer complaints to name a few things.
