Affiliate links are, well, ugly. This is what a typical affiliate link looks like

http://9ce91bn0-lipeu7g48jxzgp3pn.hop.affiliate.com/tid=PREFER

(It's not an actual affiliate link so it's OK to show it here.)

Social media sites don't like you using affiliate links. So how can you promote your affiliate company's products on social media and also on your website?

You can opt for an online shortening service like bit.ly or goo.gl but they still look ugly. And you have no control over them if your affiliate company drops you like a hot potato or goes bust.

Enter Pretty Link Lite. A free plugin which you can install from your WordPress dashboard.

One of the major advantages of using a pretty link is that if you need to change where the link is going you just need to change the URL in Pretty Link and you can keep the same pretty link wherever you've put it... on your website, social media...

Actual case history (only the names have been changed to protect the innocent): I was promoting a PLR membership website using mydomain.com/PDFs as the pretty link. Everything was fine for many months but then they didn't update their SSL certificate. My referrals were being redirected to the right website but their browser popped up a warning that the website was not safe. DANG! My solution? I found another PLR website with an affiliate program. I made one simple change in Pretty Link Lite and the link (mydomain.com/PDFs) is now pointing to a new affiliate program's sales page. You just can't do that with an online link shortening app.

OK. We've covered the 'Why' now let's cover the 'How'

First we install the plugin and activate.

Pretty Link Lite uses your website's URL with a suffix of your choosing. It's important to keep the suffix short - a single word - no spaces. You can choose something generic (PDFs) or specific like a product's model number (H390) if you've reviewed a particular product. I never accept the suffix that the plugin suggests - I make it something meaningful so I can remember what the link is about. e.g. http://blogwithwp.com/video

It's very important to ensure that your Permalinks show 'Post Name' as this is the format that Pretty Link Lite uses. For more details on WordPress settings check out WordPress Settings

Thanks for watching.

Fantastic presentation. Just to add to what Marion has been explaining, social media considers those ugly links to be spams and ALWAYS BLOCK POSTS ASSOCIATED WITH THOSE UGLY LINKS.

This was the problem I had with Pinterest. I was advised to come and follow this video. So when I followed this video and changed my links to pretty links, life has been easy since then on social media

My posts were accepted again.

Just a simple question: whenever I play with Pretty links and want to copy the new prettylink on my webpage, must I be then in editor??
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I click on Pretty Links in the WordPress dashboard and copy the link I want to use from there.
Reply
UlfStorm Premium
Hi Marion, yes that I understood but must my webpage be in editor mode to do any changes?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I'm not sure what you mean by "editor mode". You must be in the WordPress dashboard to access everything in the back end. You can't make changes from the front end (what other people see).
Reply
UlfStorm Premium
In dashboard we have Site Manager where I log into my site and where I can edit my posts and I have Site Editor where I write my posts . My confusion is that in both I can edit .
I tried your method yesterday evening and everything works: I get a prettylink,I can copy it to my site BUT if I hover my cursor over the new prettylink in my document, it does not open or refers to my raw link. Somebody told me that PRETTYLINK does not work in all themes. Did you ever experience the same?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
OK, now I understand. You're referring to the new Site Content feature which is only at WA and linked to websites hosted at WA. And Site Manager (again only at WA) which logs you into your WordPress site dashboard.

You copy the Pretty Link and use that instead of a normal link when you are writing a post or page. Pretty links are all lower case letters and/or numbers. There are no spaces allowed in any links so if you need more than one word you'll use a hyphen (dash) between the words instead of spaces.

This is an example of a Pretty Link
https://marionblackonline.com/wa It's my website's URL with /wa added at the end.

So far I haven't come across any themes or plugins that stop Pretty Links from working.

I have a question: can you use pretty link as a regular click tracker to track conversions of your affiliate product offers?
Or do you have to buy one of those expensive tracking softwares available out there (click magic, hyperlinker, etc)?
Best
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Pretty Links counts clicks but it doesn't track conversions.
Reply
philaccardo Premium
Thank you, Marion.
So I guess I have to learn how to use My-Linker 2 which I read can track conversion clicks, havent I?
Unfortunately, there is no complete decent training about it nowhere to be found here at WA or outside.
What is your recommendation for conversion clicks tracking?
Best
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I don't see how any app could track conversions. You send people to the websites of the companies you're affiliated with and you have to trust them to let you know if your referrals convert to buyers.
Reply
Sharlita Premium
In your example you said you used your pretty link for a new affiliate program but what did you do with the article that wasn't directing people to the old affiliate company correctly? And did you remove the link from that old article all together?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
One of the advantages of using Pretty Links is that you can repurpose the link to point to a different website if you need to. You can't do that with an online link shortener.

How do you want to use Pretty Links on your videos?

You create a new Pretty Link for each link you want to shorten. Then you use the same link wherever you want to put it.

Are you embedding your videos in your website?

Hi Marion, I am having a problem creating a group for the links I am creating for my affiliate links in the Pretty Link Lite Plugin.

For example I wanted to make a group for WA Training.

After creating the Pretty Link, I scroll to the bottom > click on advanced options>add the title of group>Tick the no follow, parameter forward, and tracking boxes> update

I am still not getting the groups to appear.

Any suggestions?

Reply
littlemama Premium
Where would you post if it's not on your website? Are you talking about sharing it on social media? If so, yes, you can share any WA resource.

As videos from WA cannot be downloaded, you can still share the resource on your website with just a link... or a pic of the video with a link anchored to the image. This will be fine to do as well.

Hi Dan, if you're talking about sharing WA affiliate links directly to social media? Yes, that's a problem because it's been abused too much in the past so we can't do that anymore.

Like I said, we can't embed any WA videos to our blog. You have to just add your link to an image of the video on your blog post. Then share your blog post on social media. This is the only way to sure from WA to social media. This is true for Pinterest too.

Hi Marion! so I have a small problem with the pretty links. Followed and installed all as per Karl training and yours and they look great until I mouse over them in the web view, I keep getting 20% in between words so for example the link that I beautified would be: www.mywebsite.com/join20%wa or www.mywebsite.com/build20%website20%in200seconds
This definitely bugs me and it doesn't look nice after I followed all the training and installs just the final version is not good looking. i seen you have a good knowledge so if you could advise what I can change would be great!

Thanks in advance

Bojana
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
The "20%" is code for a space. URLs don't have spaces only letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores. One of the main purposes of using Pretty Links is to make the link shorter. So instead of "join wa" your could use "join-wa" or just "join" and instead of "build website in 30 seconds" I would use "build" or "30secs". Another point to remember is that you can re-use your link to point to another URL. So it's best to not be too specific.

Marion, wonder if I can bug you again...

this time about aweber...

now imagine you have a plugin just like hello bar, (I'm sure you're familiar with that one), it's the one that is just about 50 pixels in height, to capture emails...

well, I have a similar one which is incorporated into my theme...it's cool, it's called "convertplug" and comes with the X theme.

now, my only issue when trying to put the aweber code into it, and I am sure it will be same with hello bar and other similar email capture plugins....

is that I only want the code, to link to the predefined settings...

however, when I get the code from aweber, and I hook it up to convertplug, the bloomin thing tries to show the horrible aweber template for the box....

Is there a setting inside aweber to get "just the code" and not the pre defined template boxes...

Hope u understand me rambling....

Thanks

Parameter forwarding and no follow...

I've had people telling me not to activate those ones, Marion...

What's the truth of the matter?

I heard that it doesn't matter if you check no follow, because google is going to follow what the heck it likes, anyway...

Also, what about the advanced settings? (I have the pro version of pretty link)

Thanks
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Parameter forwarding is not necessary. No follow won't hurt. It may prevent losing link juice. I'm not using the pro version 'cos the free one works just fine for my stuff.
Reply
Jim-Bo Premium
Okay good stuff. A couple or three yay or nay questions...

1. Do you know what parameter forwarding is?

2. I will select no follow from now on...

3. Can I edit all my current links and click the no follow? Will there be any harm done?

Thanks Maid Marion

Every image on Wikimedia Commons has its own licence terms. You must follow the terms of the licence to legally reuse the image. As long as you follow the rules I can't see a problem with shortening the link to the appropriate licence.

Hi Marion,

In Pretty Link 'Link Options', did you set the Default Link Redirection Type to Temporary (307) or Permanent (301)? What is the difference?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
I would recommend using Temporary (307) because you may need to reuse the pretty link to point to a different URL. Here's the official word on the subject http://blairwilliams.com/user-manuals/ ?action=viewcat&id=3 (remove the space)

Hi Marion--

Amazon specifically states that it's against affiliate policy to alter their product links. Even though Pretty Link is not really changing the link, but is aesthetically, do you think their affiliate monitors would see this and say that we're changing the links?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Some people say they are using Pretty Links with their Amazon account and they're not having problems. Here's the link to Amazon's link checker so you can see if your links are working properly https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/home/tools/linkchecker ?ac-ms-src=ac-nav (remove the space).
Reply

Ok, thanks. What I don't get with this tool is: what url is this checking? My affiliate links are embedded within iframes. Are you saying that after using something like Pretty Links,THEN check to see if that link is working properly by using this tool? Thanks.

First check that the Pretty Link takes you to Amazon then enter the pretty link into the tool to see if it's using your affiliate link.

What does 'Hit/Uniq' and 'Referrer' mean?
Reply

'Hits' is the number of times the link is clicked and 'Uniq" is the number of different people who have clicked on the link. If Hits/Uniq is 27/26 then 26 people have clicked on the link and one person has clicked on it twice.

Google bots crawl your webpages. Each time a bot arrives at a link it must determine whether to stay on the same page it's crawling or divert to follow the link. You want as many bots to stay within your content as possible to keep indexing your site.
