You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "increase vertical jump" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Go Premium and Get Jaaxy Lite (& Unlimited Searches)!

Tasks 0/3 completed
2. Perform at Least 5 Searches Using Jaaxy (do as many as you want though)
3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

I set some high goals because I am thinking of a future where I can work for myself and my wife is able to focus on her interests. I am concerned about my ability to write posts that appeal to others. I have never been much of a writer and have always tried to keep my thoughts and opinions to myself. When I do say or write down what I am thinking, I hear or see critical comments and wish I had kept my thoughts to myself. Even now, as I write this comment, I am struggling to articulate what I want to say and not delete what I have written. Does anyone else ever feel like this?
DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - there is no problem with setting high goals as long as they are within a realistic time frame. For example, most people don't see any income at all for at least 3 months, but it is more likely to take 6 months. After that, you will see an increase in visitors to your website.

Don't worry about the writing. Here, you are taught to write in a conversational style, as though you were talking to a friend. It's not like writing an essay, it doesn't have to be perfect.
AbieAJ Premium Plus

Think of it pretty much like you are explaining something to your best friend, how would you then manage it?

I start off with free writing anything that comes to mind, read up. proofread, have someone else read it.

And then bit by bit getting focused and more focused writing.

You may consult with for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

With goals you can set however best suits you, however I keep it realistic.

It really doesnt matter how high you set your goals, what is important is making sure you set achievable time frames to hit them.

I was exactly the same as you about 5 weeks ago, thinking how am I going to write about things when I have never been a good writer, buts its funny if you pick a topic/niches you love the words easily build into sentences, the sentences into paragraphs and before you know it you have an article ready to publish.

Just articulate it as if you were talking to friends.

All the best with your goals and I am here if you ever get stuck.

We are delighted to meet you.
Fantastic goals here.
As for writing your thoughts in a post: you choose the topic of interest for your website. It can most certainly be something that does not reveal your personal thoughts. For example, let's say you are a camper. So you can have a website all about camping for beginners. So your site would be about what beginners need to know and do related to camping. A lot of the information would be about things you need to go camping. With such a topic there is no need to reveal your inner thoughts. That is just an example. The training teaches you about the different kinds of info you can write and an outline of style and content approach.

We wish you much success.

I watched the video for lesson 4 on building my website. After I was able to build my website, I noticed that the number of domains and number of free websites I have says 10.

In the video, the number says 25 for both. I am just curious if this is something that has changed since Kyle made the video.
JoeRebisz Premium
This was recently updated last year. As a premium member you get a total of 10 websites, combination of .com domains and siterubix subdomains.

Ok thank you. 10 is still a good amount of websites.

Hi Norman,
Welcome to WA.

I can understand your doubt due to lack of experience.

I can assure you the course is pretty straight forward and easy to follow.

However I would be most happy to help you along. May I suggest you do some research before choosing your niche? I did a small blog on market research recently. This will help you to decide on the type of business you wish to build. Since the primary purpose of starting a business is to make money it is important to choose well. You may also read here about niche vs market. When you need help moving on be sure to reach out to me. I will be happy to help.

Hope these help.

All the best.

After trolling around google, I noticed a website with a very similar name and theme to mine. I came up with "fishkeepersguide" and the already established site is "fishkeeperguide"
I love the title "The Fish Keepers Guide" but am concerned with the similarity to an already established website.
What is your advice? Should I push forward and try to beat their website, or delete my site and start over with a new name?

DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - it's not necessarily a question of beating that site, but are you infringing on their copyright? They may consider that you are trying to cash in on their already established name. You could face legal action.
AbieAJ Premium Plus

We should never compare ourselves to others vs be unique and do our thing.

Check if the domain may be copyrighted, trademarked and ' or registered to an established business, then you need steer away, as you do not want to build your business and few years down the line end up with a law suit.

Here's some insight how to go about choosing an appropriate domain name, however please be aware hosting is provided with a premium subscription to the platform.

You can use Namemesh dot com - look in SEO & MIX columns

You can also use leandomainsearch dot com, you input a word and it gives you another

And godaddy valuation tool to find a memorable name.

Nowadays domains are not so affected by SEO vs writing quality rich content with good choice of keywords, latter of which would rank you in the search engines.

I would always go for a dot com domain name vs dot net or dot org as people's perceptions when they start typing they would typically assume it is a dot com. And make sure it is spelled correctly as it cannot be edited once purchased.

Also I would not include dashes, may be one dash permittable in some situations.
It is from my understanding that business names and domain names are not protected by the copyright law, but more so the intellectual property of the site itself (the blog posts themselves).
Again, from my understanding of copyright and trademark laws, I would only face legal action if their name was trademarked. I checked their site, and with the Trademark Electronic Search System, and it doesn't seem that "Fish Keeper Guide" is protected in any way.

Do you agree with me? I think I'm legally safe to use "The Fish Keepers Guide"

jghwebbrand Premium
You may be safe, but since you are just starting your site I would choose another name. Your suggested name is too similar. You can get some additional ideas from

I am just going to say here; if you get a following it won't really matter. No Offense meant; just saying; if you can get a big following. It won't really matter. I don't know if this helps? Sorry, if did Offend.
Good evening or morning everyone!

I know a fair bit about using a website for cash flow, and I'm curious, are these websites set up to be monetized with advertisements?
It seems important to max out every cent possible from a site visitor.

(feel free to check out my first blog post too!)
AbieAJ Premium Plus

They can in due course, however a website needs traffic and for it to get traffic you need content.

To create content, you'd figure out a focused niche.

A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in yoga
Yoga exercises for beginners

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below You can do a google search
Your niche + affiliate programs
Your niche + affiliate programs + location
and see what results you get

Meanwhile I'd ask as many questions as I want to get clarifications,

Yes, from what I remember; if you are talking about putting Ads on your site. It should come up in the training. Just keep following the training; and you should get to the point about putting up ads.

Other Members please confirm?

Hope this helps and encourages?

Sure thing. monetize with ads if u want.

But the basic aim to build a website here is to make it RANK in Google or other search engines for KEYWORDS that people online usually search for.
Benjamin89 Premium
It comes down to personal preference. I realized that it made sense to maximise all earning possibilities when I started out, including ads revenue. Wouldn't worry about it yet until you get some momentum with your content and visitor traction first.
jghwebbrand Premium
Some experienced members do have advertisements in their sites.
Glad to hear you have a background in this already. I would suggest that you follow the WA training and learn its approach as well. You will pick up some very good tips.
