You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

The "calorie based diet" input is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Content" and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "calorie based diets", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • calorie counting
  • calorie diets
  • how to count calories
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "calorie counting" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator). This is a quick indicator on the keyword viability and quality based on all of the combined metrics.

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Go Premium and Get Jaaxy Lite (& Unlimited Searches)!

Tasks 0/3 completed
2. Perform at Least 5 Searches Using Jaaxy (do as many as you want though)
3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

I'm still working on setting up my menu page. I've managed to get my 'About me Page' and the 'Privacy Policy' onto the right side under Menu Structure, but now I'm told to go to 'Menu Settings'. and click 'Primary Menu' but my page doesn't look like that at all.
This is what I have under "Menu setting', I do not have "Primary Menu'

Menu Settings

Auto add pages-
Automatically add new top-level pages to this menu

Display location- Desktop Horizontal Menu
Desktop Expanded Menu
Mobile Menu
Footer Menu
Social Menu
jghwebbrand Premium
Each theme uses slightly different terms for the "primary menu".

So what is the name of the menu you created? If it appears at the top in your header that is the same as the "primary menu".

Based on your above description, your theme also allows for a footer menu and social menu. Plus it looks like you can set up a separate menus for desktop and mobile. That is different from the usual. If you have a mobile phone you can see what the Mobile menu would look like if you create one for it. The same is true fro the desktop menu.

Your menu will not look exactly the same. That is okay.

Hi again,
Thanks for helping, yes everything about all my pages does not look anything like the training videos or lessons, I'm having such a hard time.

Ok, I titled my menu 'Menu 1', so I guess you are saying that my title is the same as 'primary menu' I got that but under the menu settings should I be checking off all those choices? There is no option for Menu 1 or primary menu. Do I select all of these? I'm not computer savvy in the least.

As a beginner it looks like your theme is too complicated.
Would you be opposed to changing themes. Generate Press may not be your favorite because it doesn't have a place for a header images, but it is a much simpler theme to use. Changing your theme will not affect your pages and posts. You cam have to create a new menu, but it seems that is best so you can follow along better with the training.

How does that sound?
LauraMcCrack Premium
Theme...Uumm, do you mean the photo I selected? I see 4 photos or themes I don't know why there are 4, I only selected one, it's the 1st one a photo of Italy to go along with my niche. If that's what you're talking about I'd love to get rid of the other 3. What's Generate Press?

I'd like to have an image.

I feel so lost.
jghwebbrand Premium
Yes, the 4 that displayed (wordpress backoffice left hand side see appearance -> hover and see 4 images - those are themes They have features built into them. KEEP the 4 of them there so your site has a default one to use in case the one you have chosen has issues.

Yes, the theme you have chosen to "activate" has a complicated menu feature.

To understand the concept of "menu" and follow the training it really would be best to Activate Generate Press. Generate Press should be pone of your theme options.
LauraMcCrack Premium
Hey, I really thank you for your time. I never thought this would be so foreign for me. I've just been following the training and it all seemed cool to difficult, but suddenly I'm overwhelmed.

Ok thanks I'll check out and activate generate Press.
TheAbie Premium Plus
Can you give us a screenshot of what you have right now? So that we can work the issue and thank you.
LauraMcCrack Premium
Sure, I'd be happy for any help.
LauraMcCrack Premium
Hi Again,
I'm not sure what to do to find Generate Press. I've sent you a screen shot of my themes, 3 say activate and the one I originally chose says customize. Is Generate Press somewhere on this page. Thanks!

Hello all,

I'm having trouble getting onto my starter website, when I try to login or do anything it tells me that "the site cannot be reached." I'm not seeing an option to scrap it and start from scratch as I literally just made it and wouldn't loose anything but I am not sure what to do to move forward and build.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

Hi - I wonder if perhaps you have tried to change the domain name, which you can't do. This will crash your site.

As a premium member, you can host up to 10 websites, so you could simply build another one.

Or, if you want to delete, click on Websites, go to Details, and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the Delete option.
jghwebbrand Premium
Can you see it listed here.
Do a browser refresh CTRL + F5

If not, I am not sure it was created.
You could try creating another one.

How to delete and build different free website.
Menu Bar -> websites -> Site manager -> find your website
Look in lower right hand corner for "details" click on it.
Then scroll down and look in bottom left hand corner for "delete"
Click it.
To create a new one
Menu Bar -> websites -> Build Website -> Free website.

That is the advantage of starting with the free website because it can be deleted.

Once a dot com domain name is purchased it cannot be deleted. You are the owner for a full year and can renew it for same length of time. To get a different domain name you must buy another dot com domain name. A purchased domain name cannot be changed because of industry standards for domain name registrars.
TheAbie Premium Plus
You may have to recycle your website. Here's what to do.

To delete a siterubix subdomain | or dot com if applicable, click details on subdomain in question in site manager, onward next page scroll all the way to the bottom and click delete.

Then you may go to Site Builder

Choose a free domain, enter credentials and follow procedure.

I am interested in Health particularly in diabetes and supplements that can help maintain healthy glucose levels to the point of being totally diabetic free.
I have come up with the niche "healthygluco" to go with a website name "Diabetic Freedom"
I would greatly appreciate comments on this choice of mine.
jghwebbrand Premium
Like your domain name and niche idea.
If you nave medical credentials make sure to include those in the "about Me" page. It may be hard to grow your niche without those credentials. I am wondering what you would do to monetize it.
jghwebbrand Premium
You will be writing posts for people to read on your website. You will be writing both informational posts and product reviews. What kind of questions would people be asking about your niche that you can help them with as well? Your informational posts are important to grow your traffic.

To find questions people ask you can do a google search - look for "People also Ask section" and also use

You ought to discuss an aspect of health to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

Diabetes type 1 or 2 prevention or care for qualifying patients. The more focused a niche website is starting out, the better chance it has to start having traction and traffic.

I have given this some thought and I would like to know and get some thoughts from all of you.
How about a niche about being healthy at 64? I have always ridden bicycles and did alot of running , I would like to do something on those lines, But Not being computer savy I dont know how to put it all together. I got ideas, but Not the mechanical apptitude to do it
TheAbie Premium Plus
You can totally.

You ought to discuss how being healthy at 64 and above who would be your target audience.

The more focused a niche website is starting out, the better chance it has to start having traction and traffic.

Please be aware you also need to create lots of content addressing issues related to your focused niche website.

Most important is to be passionate and genuinely interested in your niche
I think I would have to put it in the category of Health and would like to put in videos of how a fat boy like me can still lose weight and get in shape at 64
Just brings the thought of the song that the Beatles did back in the day called : when Im 64
TheAbie Premium Plus
Please be aware you'd be required to write lots of content addressing issues, and so ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.
jghwebbrand Premium
Healthy at 64 is very vague. Who would your audience be and how would you help them? You could focus on outdoor exercise - biking and running.

It looks like you have a lot of experience and knowledge about bikes and running. Bikes seems like a neat niche. Have you taken long rides? You could include scenic places to bike ride plus essentials for a bike trip. It seems like there would be a lot to write about.

The training assumes you have no experience. Go at your pace and see what happens.

A niche should be for a targeted group of people How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later Do ask for help when y9u get stuck.
that is what I want to focus on. My experiences in Biking and running go a long way back, Yes I have taken long bike rides but that was like 40myears ago, so back then, not many pictures were taken, I am just going to have to rely on memory and the things I did back then up until i had hip replacement But I now want to also focus on what can be done after surgery and after being told by my doctor that my running days are over, and prove that even at the age of 64 IT CAN be done
and that is where you come in to help ?
TheAbie Premium Plus
I'd go over it, let us know how you get along and if there's anything else you'd like, please feel free to reach out.

You're very welcome!
VitaliyG Premium Plus
That's definitely a niche. A wellness blog for people over 60. I like it.
TheAbie Premium Plus
Biking or Running they are all great, what's more important is that you are passionate about, you help people giving them advice, you walk through your journey and recommend appropriate relevant products to solved their issues.

So essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.
jghwebbrand Premium
Good for you. Like your spirit.

Hiii :) ok, after watching the niche video, I was wondering since it’s put out there that whatever niche we choose it will more than likely be successful because our audience is the internet of billions and billions of people, right? Soo how do we reach all those people? Because the amount of traction we get from our website or affiliate link, will pretty much determine the financial success. What if someone only has a certain amount of followers/social media friends? Won’t that effect the level of success in some way? What other ways are there to get your website out there in front of all these billions of people besides posting on your personal social media?
DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - the method taught here is to write informative, helpful articles for your website that offer answers to problems that people are searching for.

That way, Google will put your website on page 1 of its search engine results, so that you can be seen easily.

It's not that easy, and is a long term commitment, as you need to be seen as an authority on the niche subject you have chosen.

I personally don't use any form of social media for business purposes.
RBlaze Premium
Thank you Diane! Would you mind me seeing an example of one of your articles that you mentioned?
DianeScorpio Premium
Sorry, I prefer not to share my website details. However, I see you like crafting, so here is a members website about dolls houses!
jghwebbrand Premium
Your website is where you grow your brand. And traffic grows by writing informational and product reviews. Choosing your post titles is done by keyword research so you have an idea of traffic volume potential and ranking potential. Social media can refer back to your website. Your website is the "hub" of your brand.

People search the internet for help, so your informational posts will provide answers to questions plus definitions, etc. It is very important to follow the training so you don't miss important tasks that need to be completed.

The way to learn the online process is to complete the Online Entrepreneur Training which is a self-managed program. You can do it at your pace. After you finish each task make sure to check mark the box in front of the task. When you have questions, you can ask them in the comments section after each lesson.

When you choose a niche it is ideal if you know something about it already (its problems, and how to solve them) It saves some research time. But you can use the internet to find information you do not know. Make sure you like your niche enough that you are willing to spend time writing and helping people. Helpful good content builds trust and trust leads to sales. Always focus on helping first.

A niche should be for a targeted group of people How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later
TheAbie Premium Plus
You don't, you would only reach a handful of the billions.

And that's what WA teaches, the Wealthy Affiliate is a learning platform that teaches you how to build a progressive successful site for affiliate marketing.

I think of something I am passionate and genuinely interested in, I know lots about and can create succinct original content addressing issue in relation.

For example workout exercises for beginners.

A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience.
