You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

The "calorie based diet" input is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Content" and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "calorie based diets", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • calorie counting
  • calorie diets
  • how to count calories
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "calorie counting" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator). This is a quick indicator on the keyword viability and quality based on all of the combined metrics.

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Go Premium and Get Jaaxy Lite (& Unlimited Searches)!

Tasks 0/3 completed
2. Perform at Least 5 Searches Using Jaaxy (do as many as you want though)
3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

Congratulations on wanting to learn how to do this and go to school at the same time.

When it comes to choosing a niche is more about an audience you wish to help. So for you it may be those who are eco friendly to the environment. But that still is very broad

Here are some niche tips that will help you refine your thought of sustainability.

A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

The importance of a targeted audience is that It's always better to target a specific niche with a specific solution to problems.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping.
Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning and to give my website has a chance to rank and grow in traffic, the focus needs to be a smaller scope.

For example my initial narrow scope could be: essential camping equipment for beginners. I can talk about camping, my experiences, what I have learned about camping, and how I have discovered what is really needed. Since I am quality focused, I have found good equipment which I believe is the very best. I will share my review of the equipment I use and why it is the best. Once the website is established and has a good volume of traffic, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related.

So with my initial narrow scope, after visiting my website, a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping is all about for a beginner and the equipment needed and the best brand products to buy. I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping.

I am passionate about camping and want my readers to get excited about it too and feel comfortable when going for the first time that they have the necessary equipment..

So my niche is camping with an initial narrow scope. My targeted group is beginning campers wondering what equipment is needed and what the best is.

I have had some disappointing experiences so I want to help them avoid the same mistakes I have made. I will help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

I will write many content posts about camping (the how to’s, what is, etc.). A beginner camper has no idea what kind of equipment is necessary. So I will write posts about the necessary equipment. I will choose products I can recommend. I will compare products and identify the best. So after visiting my website a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping equipment is needed and the best brand products to buy. So I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping equipment necessary for a pleasant and safe camping experience.

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Keep in mind it's important to choose a niche specific enough that way the target audience arrives at the website and finds exactly what they're looking for. When you go to broad, you lose that.

Health and Wellness would be a very, very broad niche, a little too broad.

If you choose a niche specific enough with plenty of room for scaling out later you are in good shape.

Hi

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer.

The question is WHO would be your target audience vs Not what you are selling to an audience.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

That's a great niche to be in however broad you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in yoga

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

But let me run my idea:

Or since its all in the house niche can i run it on the same webpage?

Hi

Awesome niche, however needing be refined a bit. I am sure you'd be able devise a plan moving forward. When needing a hand, or have further questions. kindly let us know.

You may start with a siterubix subdomain around a focused niche and build up content and until you are satisfied with your niche and name, down the line have your own dot com, as some affiliate programs do not work with a subdomain. Cost of which is $15 yearly each privacy included. You can then move your siterubix to your dot com applying the move feature found within the site manager which is an easy process.

Another reason is that if you made a mistake on a dot com domain, you won't be able to edit the URL, you'd have to purchase a new one.
Reply
jghwebbrand Premium
I would use the free domain name first and do the first 10 lessons, because many times what happens is that people change their mind on the domain name they want and cannot change it but have to buy another domain name.. When you use the free siterugbix.com you can MOVE it to a purchased domain name - everything moves. As for your niche idea great opportunity. and its good to see you have the background knowledge of it. Terrific.

For sure; finish the Training first; do the training first; then try your idea out. For sure do the Training first.

Hey people! I can’t decide which niche to start with. RV ideas and camping. They are similar in some ways, yet very different. But I think I can make it in one bundle? That way I can talk about things needed for both. Plus people are always wanting easy tips and tricks for cooking. Decorating, packing, organizing. Give me your input please!

Hi

I'd pick the one that's best resonates with me.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

For example if you are in camping

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research which you'd fine in site content > templates:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Okay here's our thoughts.
You have some board ideas here and they are good and popular with an audience needing help. So it is important to define the audience you want to help and how you wish to help them. Even though RV and Camping as somewhat the same, the group of people will most likely be different. So it is important to decide which audience you wish to focus on.

Which one of your ideas are you most passionate about, have the most experience with, know the problems and ways you can help people. That is how you will grow traffic to your website.

Here's an example and some general tips to help you refine one of your ideas. (Just one idea to start with on a website.)

Here are a couple of blogs on narrowing and expanding a niche.
How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

Availability of affiliate programs for niches can be found using the following browser search,

Your niche idea + Affiliate program
Your niche idea + Affiliate program + Location (location is optional).

Hope that helps you.

Hi, Joy! What I'm seeing people say, with utter consistency, is that you should cover whatever you enjoy the most and that you're certain you can continue to write about without getting bored. So in other words, whatever you really love and are excited about is probably the best choice. If you love both RV ideas and camping equally, then toss a coin! The advice about a site is that you should continue to post on it for about six months and consider at least 20 posts to be your *minimum*, so keep that in mind, too.

Best of luck to you :-)

You could go for Camping in General; and then throw in RV's later. RV's to me are sort of included in Camping. So, you might just do Camping and throw in RV's later.

Hope this helps and encourages?

Depends on if you have a bigger interest and passion for the mechanical side of RVing or the nature side of camping.
Both would be good niches. They are very different.
I do both, I own a 29 foot RV and backpack tent camp. Not much is used from one to the other.

Well my friend, I have done what I call tent camping. My boys disagree. lol! They say I glamp. I bought a gutted 5th wheel. I now have the task of rebuilding it. I like projects. I will be hiring someone to do my wiring though. I love watching families living full time in an RV. Camping is so peaceful for me. Every time I go, I don’t want to come back. This is my dream life. I can pull it just fine. Backing, I need a lot of practice. My dogs love it too.

So, help me think if you don’t mind. I am rebuilding the camper. But I also enjoy simply tent camping. Just hanging out at the campsite playing games, cooking and meeting other campers. I love to kayak. I excited just talking about it.

Rebuilding the RV would give you a lots of content. Videos of each step with helpful hints, the things that went wrong for you, this would drive more traffic to your blog.
My RV sits on a pad at a lake, don't move it anymore. Backing is no problem for me, I drove big trucks for years.
You need to choose one or the other, after you have a lot of traffic, over 100 per day, you could add a tent camping sideline.
When starting a website, you need to have a narrow direction or traffic will be harder to get and keep.
Glamping is not bad, in the 70's I purchased a small refrigerator for my tent to keep food and milk. I still have it for drinks in my game room.
Pm me here at WA if you would like more detailed help with your content in either one of these niches.
I have been camping and tenting since the 60's. I am going on a 2 week backpack camping trip next summer.
