You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "increase vertical jump" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/3 completed

3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

One of the things that I am finding is that I seem to learn more easily through the text portion of the lessons rather than the videos. I have the lessons opened in one window and my site opened in another and can swith back and forth to complete the tasks.

I love talking about agriculture production and also mentoring persons with disabilities. However, it seems there are not many affiliate programs in these two fields. HI I would go with something that resonates with me most , however a niche a site, so either agriculture or mentoring so that you do not confuse Google or your visitors. As they are broad you're wanting narrow them down to a subcategory for starters. You can go with https://answersocrates.com/ try find a suitable niche subcategory. Once site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

One niche, a website.

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?
Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. You can do a google search
Your niche + affiliate programs
Your niche + affiliate programs + location
and see what results you get

Or click the Promote tab top menu.

As a business, it seems very important that you have an online presence. This training will teach you how to do that. Level 1 training will get you started, but a Paid Premium membership will provide the resources you really need for success. Because you will need a com website, hosting, a keyword research tool to help you choose the best titles for your blogs and then you will need support (this would include technical and community support).

A website should increase your sales because more people will learn about your business.

Here's some membership info.

You are a Free Starter member. You can remain that way forever; If you remain as a Starter Member, after 7 days your access to the Paid Premium program will become very limited. You will still have access to the free training You also get a free subdomain website which expires in 6 months. But access to this community and site support goes away.

For 7 days you have access to the Paid Premium program so you get a feel as to what WA has to offer. Please take a good look around. If you want an additional 30 day access to Paid Premium it costs $19 if you sign up for ii in the first 7 days. Once you sign up for Paid Premium you cannot go back to being a Free Member. Once you are a Paid Premium member it costs $49 per month or $495 a year.

The benefits you get with the Paid Premium are those needed to succeed. The resources include Level 2 - 5 Online Entrepreneur Training (weekly live webinars, guides and tips from the community members and so much more, hosting of 10 websites, unlimited usage of Jaaxy the keyword research tool needed to choose good ranking keywords for post titles, 24 x 7 support (community and Site Support) plus other things.

You will need to write a good website with at least 72 posts.
This might take you 3 to 9 months of effort.
It's no get-rich-quick scheme here.

I DIDN'T THINK IT WAS A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME. WHEN I GET PRESENTED WITH A BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY, I NEED THE BASICS UP FRONT. WHAT YOU WILL DO, WHAT I WILL DO AND HOW MUCH WILL I PAY. FAST, EASY SIMPLE. BUSINESS OWNERS DON'T HAVE TIME FOR ALL THE FLUFF AND TRYING TO SLIDE INTO WHAT THOSE DETAILS ARE GOING TO BE.
I DON'T THINK YOU GUYS GET THIS. YOUR LESSONS ARE YOUR WAY OF SLOWING LEADING PEOPLE INTO AN EVENTUAL MONTHLY SERVICE, WHICH IS FINE AND SMART, BUT NOT FOR AN EXPERIENCED PERSON.
GOOD LUCK ITS A GOOD BUSINESS FOR YOU GUYS.

Hey guys! Enjoying the content... So far it's been really fun to follow along.

One question about "Setting Your Website Up for Search Engines" video.

In video, you suggest "post content" as meta description and it seems to be the default for you.

However, for me the default seems to be "post excerpt" and it also makes more sense to me. Page content always exceeds the recommended length for meta description and also excerpt is the one that is made to be short and motivate visitor to click on the post, so it seems like a better choice to me.

Is there an SEO reason I'm missing that would make "post content" a better choice here?

Using "post content" exceeds the recommended length, but the alternative is that you'd need to create a custom excerpt for every single post. Google will naturally create it's own meta description based on your content this way. This setup is just easy for newbies.

That being said, if you want to make the effort to create a custom meta description for each post, I would do that.

With the All in One SEO plugin, you'll see three spots with "Meta" options.

You can leave the "meta keywords" section alone. It's not necessary.

The "title" and "description" is also not necessary, which is why Kyle usually doesn't have you fill this out. HOWEVER, it does have some benefits if you want to take the time to do it. Jay recommend you fill it out for every page on the site.

Here's a great training on how to fill it out properly: Also Jay has two, more details resources on how to fill out those two spots if you want to learn how to create excellent meta data (definitely worth your time IMO, but not necessary to learn right away). How To Fill Out The Meta Title And Description:

The Title should be the same as you post title, but you can change this slightly in some cases if your original title is too long/short. Usually you just make the meta title and the post title the same.

The Description is the little snippet that appears in Google search results when people find your site. This is also automatically generated by the All in One SEO plugin, but you can override what the AIO SEO plugin does by typing your own description in there.

A good meta description can increase your click through rate in the search engines, and good CTR means you'll get higher placement next time around.

It does NOT affect SEO directly, but those indirect benefits of more clicks can definitely help your website increase rankings and grow traffic over time. I like to experiment with different SEO titles and see which ones get the most clicks!

Hey Nathaniell,

Thanks for the in-depth answer and additional resources.
What you said really makes a lot of sense to me.

I actually enjoy writing excerpt for each and every post.

The way I think about it is, since I'm already writing an entire article, how hard is it to write one more (short) paragraph. Especially if it can help get people to actually click on your links.

Also, it kinda helps me practice writing short and to the point, compressing the entire idea into just a sentence or two, which I think is important copywriting skill to have.

Thanks once more,
Branko
