You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

The "calorie based diet" input is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Content" and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "calorie based diets", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • calorie counting
  • calorie diets
  • how to count calories
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "calorie counting" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator). This is a quick indicator on the keyword viability and quality based on all of the combined metrics.

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/3 completed

3. Find 5 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 30 avg searches, less than 100 competition)

You may like to review below resource You ought to discuss an aspect of a niche to a qualified group of people who would be your target audience.

For example
Stock trading for beginners.

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer.

Welcome to WA.

Since you are referencing stock, we assume your are in lesson 3. Following the training step by step is key.

As for stock, who is it that you wish to help and how? Why do you want to help them? The more you know about your niche the easier it is to help others and write helpful content.

So to answer Kyles question: I want to help beginners learn how to trade in the stock market.

You will be writing posts for people to read on your website - who would be the audience you wish to write for and help? You will be writing both informational posts and product reviews. What kind of questions would people be asking about your niche that you can help them with as well? Your informational posts are important to grow your traffic.

I am still just getting started off, but I do have a couple of questions, that may or may not get answered later on but just to get a bigger picture.

Is there a limited amount of niche one should, and can choose from? Like for example, if I make a website, is it possible for me to have another selection for an entirely different niche? (Like for example the website advertises both art and planting) Would that make the website seem to crowded or is it not the best idea?

Also, once I learn how to create the website, and learn how to get customers or clicks, which I’m sure is a process and takes patience, is it an option to have more than one website if you maybe have more than 1 niche?

Any advice is very much appreciated!

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

You are free to choose any niche you are passionate about. But it is only one niche for a website. The best niche is one that you are passionate about, know something about and have experience with. Knowledge and experience cuts down on research needed and gains trust easer. But the most notable factor to consider is passion. visitors and search engines alike expect to find help with just one niche idea on a site.

Yes, you can have more than one website if you choose to become a Paid Premium member. In fact you can have 10 websites with the Premium membership.

Glad you are asking questions. That is the best way to learn because you are actively involved.

We wish you well as you continue here.

I haven't chose my niche yet because my interest is too broad. I am very interested in products for seniors like... products for hormones, bifocal sunglasses, makeup for senior ladies and senior exercise, even products for women with thin, fine hair. How do I choose? I think the hair thinning products and hormone products would be my top two. Are any of these doable?
Thanks so much

Those are the products you would promote on your site vs a niche subject you would address to a qualified target audience (group of people)

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

A niche is a subject vs a product.

Okay. So your have products here and it seems you want to help seniors. So let's say you choose hair thinning. You will be writing content to help seniors with a thinning hair problem. You will start out by wanting to help them understand why it happens and if there is something safe that can be done. There may be other solutions for thinning hair too. And you would want to include those.
So to answer Kyles question we could say.
I want to help seniors with thinning hair solve that problem.

Thank you! What about hair loss for any age women? There are many products to help with that like shampoos and supplements, but there are also many products and technics that should never be used on thin/fine hair because it visually accentuates the problem. I have had to find products and technics for myself that help and even have learned what cuts work best. Many hairdressers do not know how to deal with thin, fine hair when styling. They have used the same technics and products on me that they use on everyone, even the same styles. I have walked out of salons so many times so frustrated and angry. I feel very passionate about getting the info and advice out there about the subject. Most hair dressers don't give any suggestions except hair loss shampoos. They make simple blunders like using a blow dryer on high when that is never recommended for thin, fine hair. Is this still too broad?

Awesome, and looks like you know lots about what you have chosen. To this effect I ask myself if I can produce lots of succinct original content worthy my visitors attention. And if so, I encourage you to got for it - however I would try to define more my target audience. Starting out the more focused your niche website is, the better chance it has to be successful.

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

It may be hard to narrow it down more. So maybe you can group your thoughts (topics) and start with one and cover it well and then tackle the next one. The idea here is to be an authority with something so that people with that kind of problem will find all they need on your site and not have to search for another one.

It is so terrific to see the knowledge you have. What a great opportunity and people will be so grateful for the information you provide. When you have your dot com website, let me know because I would like to learn how I can keep my hair from thinning too. Thank you.

Am I on the right path?
All we can do is continue to acquire the necessary tools, skills and training that we need to become the "best us" that we can be. Seems reasonable enough to believe that we're all here seeking the same thing- a better life for ourselves- and that the search for that has ultimately led us all to the same place, right? WA!
What an ideal utopian community..........a place where everybody is helping everybody achieve!
Whoever you are, wherever you are, know this- you're so needed in this community. If you joined this morning or you joined in the beginning, it's all the same......we need you!
I really hope that this community is everything it sounds to be; a place where everybody is seeking to succeed and a place where everybody is helping other's to succeed.
In conclusion, I say, the value of each of us is hidden deep within our hearts. Be encouraged and be persistent at pursuing and achieving your goal's. Truly "hard work" has to pay off and "every seed planted" (in good soil that is) has to bring a harvest.
Have Faith in God and do yourself a favor, too........believe in yourself, you really are unique and are full of potential

I'm also wondering why people would want to create their own website and try and get an Amazon affiliate account. Don't most people just go right to Amazon and order. That's what I do when I'm looking for a product, I go right to my Amazon account to the search bar to find what I want.

They may do yes, however some people are looking to do research before purchasing items, they seek focused websites who have covered extensive research on the products they wish to purchase and make an informed decision. If yours stand out from the crowd and delivers, as a token of appreciation they click your link go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Some shoppers are like you because they know what they want. But there are many shoppers who want to learn about what is best for ?. And they want to get an inside view. There are others who have a problem and don't know what product will solve it much less which is the best to buy. Plus websites go into much more detail about a product. So that's why affiliate marketers choose a niche and really help people so they know what the products are. Sites also explain techniques and many other things that people are searching for.

As you choose a niche for your website what will be important for you is to choose a niche that people nee help with and need help solving problems. The website you create will be more than a online store with products. In fact you will start by creating informational posts about your niche.

So what will be a great help to you is that you have a real passion for your niche. And the more you know about it the better you can help people who have questions. If you know how to solve problems related you your niche that is even better because guidance needs to be provided that is not found by just going to an online store.

We do hope this helps you to understand the need for niche websites to help people.
