You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

The "calorie based diet" input is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Content" and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

To access Jaaxy, you are going to simply click the "Research" tab within the top menu, as shown below.

This will open up the entire Jaaxy platform, which is a highly sophisticated research platform that you have access to here at Wealthy Affiliate.

To access the keyword research platform, you will do so through the "Keywords" tab once inside Jaaxy (as shown below).

My suggestion with your initial searches is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "calorie based diets", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • calorie counting
  • calorie diets
  • how to count calories
  • etc

Here is an example search that I did using the "calorie counting" as the search phrase.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator). This is a quick indicator on the keyword viability and quality based on all of the combined metrics.

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

**Note: If you are a Premium Plus+ member, you have access to Jaaxy Enterprise which provides INSTANT QSR results.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

When we find an affiliate product that we want to promote on our website or ad, do the affiliate companies have videos that are already made, or do you encourage us to make our own videos? For example, I want to start promoting and do ads on Chef Knives; if I find a great quality chef knife set that I want to promote, does the Chef Knife company have a pre-made video (like a commercial) or do I need to do my own viceo ?

You may check with the individual program or you could also make your own content. I'd also check on the small print, their terms and conditions of affiliation. Each program is different.

You may also find material on YouTube that you can embed in your blog, however you will not be able to edit a YouTube video that's not yours.

Hi - it's up to each individual affiliate program as to what they supply for marketing.

However, it would actually build up trust with your readers, if they were to see that you have genuine first-hand experience of the product. It's something that Google looks favorably on too.

Many times manufacturers do have videos they have made which you can use. You can also go to Youtube and see if you find something you like and you can always make you own.

As you choose your niche, make sure your have a targeted audience in mine that you w8ish to help because you will be writing helpful content for them. When you go to Youtube you will see :"share" then Embedded. yo0u use the code found in the Embedded tab.

Make sure you have informational posts on your site before add affiliate product links. A website needs to help before trying to sell. Help leads to trust and trust leads to sales.

Ok, probably a bit of a newbie question, but I just wanted a bit of further clarification. Just watched training 9 on key word search.
So, once we identify key words to build content around I'm assuming we want to include those exact words/phrases into the body of our content too correct? Does it need to be the exact phrasing then? Is that accurate. Can you elaborate on that for clarification.
Thanks for you help.

Use the exact same keyword phrase in your first paragraph. I use it also in the last paragraph.

Your found target keywords go in the title of your post and again in first or second paragraph then write freely. Some include them towards a conclusion if it conveys a message. I'd also make sure they are grammatically correct.

Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better. Starter sites SEO greater than 95.

For your choice of keywords, always do an incognito search on Google before settling on a keyword, to see who appears on Google Page 1

Or you may do in Jaaxy tool search analysis

HI guys,
I'm a total newbie at this whole affiliate marketing thing and it would be easy for me to just search for the best niche or the best selling product online. but what I want to ask is. Through your experiences, What is a good niche to get into? and that is factoring in that right now I'm starting from nothing and wont be able to invest in good marketing tools till I actually see a profit or income

A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

Vs profitable or demanding.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience.

Hi - the first thing to remember is that you will be expected to write a lot of content on your chosen niche, everything original, nothing copied and pasted.

At least 2 or 3 articles per week, but preferably more. And a niche is not a product, it is a subject you can help a specific audience with

Therefore, it makes sense that it should be a subject you are genuinely interested in and have some knowledge of, or at the very least, would enjoy researching.

When you say I have to at least write 2 or 3 articles a week in my chosen niche. Can you expand on that? as I don't know why that is needed

Hi - if you were to just add a load of products with affiliate links, then you would be yet another shop among the millions already out there and nobody will find your site.

You need to attract Google's attention by writing articles that help people. That way, if people were searching for an answer to something, Google would see that you had some helpful advice and put your website on page 1 for that particular topic.

Plus, as well as writing helpful posts, you will write reviews of products you recommend, to help people to decide whether to buy them or not.

Take a look at my training on how to start a website about pets, to see if it makes it any clearer.

HI Diane,

Ahhh ok that makes sense, so basically writing these articles or reviews on the product/niche I have chosen would drive traffic to my niche/product/website.
Thanks for clearing that up for me. Now its time for me to think of a niche where I could do that. once I've thought of a niche, I'll move onto "Building Your OWN Niche Website". Once I have a niche, I'll definitely have more questions for you and the community. Hopefully you guys wont get sick of me by then and still be willing to entertain me.hehe
Thanks for Reply Diane

Great question, The best place to start is to choose something you are passionate about. There are a lot of new things to learn so if you have passion and drive for your niche and want to help people with it you can handle the challenges easier.. You are doing this for the long haul. Without passion you can easily get bored or burned out with having to .write helpful niche related content. You can make money with any niche so choose what you are interested in.

Ideas to find a niche.
Do you have any hobbies? Sports? Problems you've solved? Problems you are looking to find solutions for? Products that are amazingly helpful? Something you talk a lot about? Something you wished you had learned earlier in life? Job skill?

You can learn about a new niche if you are passionate about it, but it does help if you have knowledge about and experience with it.

A niche is not a product. It is focusing on a group of people you wish to help that have a problem that needs solving.

hi, I just wanted to jump in here and I hope I don't sound too negative but I'm now on lesson 9 and this is the first time I have become excited! now I see the "how". Now I understand that through the use of "keywords" how I can get people to come to my website [and yes, I now know I have to write something] and by adding affiliate links to my site I can really make some money. If everybody else already knew this, then just call me slow. I just didn't know how this whole thing really worked. just wanted to share, got excited, I'll hush up now. You all have a nice day now.

Hey! Just wanted to say, after thinking about it for long, I have decided I would like to change my niche from belly fat loss to depression. I have suffered from clinical depression and know how horrible it is, and I also am passionate about it. I chose belly fat because I was chasing money not my passion, which I now see is wrong.

However, I wanted to ask, how do I niche down clinical depression?

Possibly causes, prevention and for effected folks their care is very important.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ - You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

Other sources include https://Quora.com, https://Answers.com, https://AnswerThePublic.com, YouTube search engine etc.

You may research other peoples work however all content must be originally written in your own words.

those types of niches are a bit harder to narrow down. Maybe you can focus only on solutions to cure/treat clinical depression. I'm sure you can write quite a few good posts on this topic.

You can check out what people are typing into Google search related to this niche to get some good ideas...

As a professional counselor, here are a few thoughts:
1. target negative thinking
2. target daily exercise
3. target the pursuit of "joy" - lots of stuff on the web about this

Hope that helps!

Thank you, Ivan! I am jotting down people's ideas for subnicheing, so I will brainstorm which niche I think is best!

That is hard to do. Since you are very familiar with this - could a focus be on how to get beyond depression. Essentials to get beyond depression.

Then you can use all of the things you did and are doing to stay positive.

Thank you! These are very interesting sub-niches! If you don't mind, could you please elaborate on 1 (targeting negative thinking) and 3 (pursuit of "joy")? I'm very interested in making content on 1 of these 2 but just want a better understanding of the type of content to make based on those 2.

Thank you!
