You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

There is a quick search feature available to you right within the Jaaxy menu. You simply click on the menu and it will pop up the submenu, with the search available right within it.

You can see I have entered "increase vertical jump" into the search (as shown below).

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

After performing the search, you will simply want to click the "magnifying glass" icon or press enter on your keyboard.

Here are how the search results look for the "increase vertical jump" search.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

I'm struggling with the about me section. Does it need to be really long? I just want to tell people this is a website I made and they can use it to find whatever I am helping someone else sell. I'm not sure if I can have a wordy About Me section like Kyle. I don't want to be trapped in this section and unable to move on due to writer's block. What should I do?

Hi - no, it can be just a few sentences. It just shows people that there is a real person behind the website, rather than just a faceless corporation. It helps to build up trust with your visitors. Anything you publish can be edited at any time in the future, so you can always change it later.

Yep, as Diane said, you can always edit it later. Try to answer these questions, though, even if the answer is 5 words long.

Who are you?
Why do you like this niche?
Why should I trust you?
How can I reach out to you?

my only question is after you have found your specific keywords etc. and made your list you mentioned writing content about each one separately . Do you make tabs on your website with a keyword header? do you just make pages dedicated to said keywords? where will these keywords be seen and does the keywords you pick effect the amount of people who will see your site ? not alot of explaination on how these keywords directly affect your page.... when you have chosen keywords and saved them will people who search those keywords be able to see your website?

Hi - you will use a different keyword for each article you write for your website. Choose your first keyword, and use it in the title of your article, and mention it once in the first paragraph. When you are ready to write your next article, choose a different keyword, and repeat the process.

When people are searching for those keywords, Google will see that you have an article that will be useful to them, and will it place it higher in its search engine results page.

Hi. I have read your answer to @mindmaze. I am somewhat confused now. Is the first ever website that we did is not for product promotion of products in different sites like Amazon, Pinterest, etc? And so we cannot link products on our first website? Was it just for articles? Sorry, got confused. Newbie here also. Thank you so much. 🙏

Hi - your website should be a mix of purely informational articles that answer questions and help people who are interested in your niche subject. Plus, you should also have product review pages where you can suggest recommended products from the likes of Amazon.

Not every article should be just about products, otherwise, Google will see it as a "spammy" selling site.

So, for example, if your site was about travel for seniors, your first few articles might be about resorts that are ideal for those with mobility problems, or hotels that offer discount deals for seniors, or ways to make long journeys more comfortable. You could then do a review of products that might be useful, such as lightweight luggage, and add links for the readers to buy them on Amazon.

so where does the website transform from blogs, reviews and articles into making actually money? i guess im missing the correlation seeing as how i am not selling products or anything?
Reply
DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - you will be able to join affiliate programs such as Amazon. They will then supply you with special links to put on your website, for the products you are reviewing.

When a potential customer reads your review and decides to buy the product, the link on your website will take them to Amazon. You then get a percentage of the sale price.

So, I notice from your profile, you are interested in beard products. So, for example, you could do a review which compares 3 different beard grooming kits, and add a link to each of the products on Amazon. If somebody reads your review and clicks on one of your links and buys one of the kits you get paid a commission.

dont you have to sign up to be an affiliate? how does that work? or is it literally that simple? just by people clicking my links to products on amazon and purchasing will get me a commision?
Reply
DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - yes, you do have to apply to be an affiliate. The program will inspect your website to make sure it is suitable. They typically expect to see lots of written content, so that is what you need to concentrate on first.

Once the affiliate program has approved your website, you then get access to the special product links. The links will have your website ID embedded in them, so that the program can recognise that the customer came through your website and can pay you the commission.

So, you can't just have links to the products, until you have actually applied to the affiliate program and been approved.

ok thats what i figured, thanks for that info... so basically the written content has to be very good and you have to have alot of it before being approved? also do websites that sell beard products etc or anything else but are family companies etc and not associated with amazon or ebay etc do they have afilliate programs? is it a possibility to reach out to local companies etc and sell my traffic to them once i get it?

DianeScorpio Premium
Hi - well, the content has to be good to engage your visitors more than anything. Most programs expect to see around 15 articles. Amazon is the exception and will accept new sites with little content. However, you do have to make 3 sales in 180 days, which is not easy until you start getting traffic.

There are tens of thousands of independent affiliate programs. To search for ones you are interested in, type the following phrase in Google -

beard products + affiliate programs

There is training here in Wealthy Affiliate about local marketing, it's not a subject I know anything about.

I'm new here. I have a question, let's see if there is something possible. I have (at the moment nothing happening due to Covid 19) a business here in Penang, Malaysia. I do hiking tours, I have several half day tours (that's the max travelers - I do not focus on locals). Now, I had a website about it which didn't go anywhere. But, how about this. I have written a book with about 120 different trails in Penang. And I have 5-6 different tours available. Can I build a business online on this with additional affiliate links to supply good etc. on this tiny nice.

Here's why I ask. I seem not to be able to get this off the ground without spending lots of money on promoting online (Google/Facebook). But I can build an extensive site about hiking here. The problem is that when you search Google for hiking in Penang and whatever combination or alternate search terms, you come ALWAYS to the big sites, Amazon, Alltrails, heck even hotel sites. Additional, the sites offer focus solely on a few popular trails (and mostly not the most interesting ones). Would this be a sustainable niche where I can make about $1000 a month on additional affiliate links embedded or should I look elsewhere?

You need to understand SEO keywords first. Your content need to have the SEO checklist before it can be found in Google.

Your current website is build by WordPress?

Ha! Of course, but you come to the key problem. Not all niches have enough keywords. It's why I was very surprised by the football snack helmets niche. I've had 3 sites with plenty of excellent keywords, nicely optimized too and yet the sites were burned by the Google Penguin update some years back min favor of some sloppy non content websites. Keywords is just not enough. I know that now.

Hey there Psyclist,
My name is LaRue and I am new to this site but not so new at marketing and I believe you have a very solid foundation going on with your site from what I gather so far. I think you even have an advantage over the larger sites. You can concentrate on the smaller more intimate details of the off grid places that your target group is looking for and pull their interests away from the big sites and guide them to your site by offering them special deal or discounts and by doing that your target group feels more comfortable dealing with you as a smaller business that they can trust. Your niche just has so many different ways to promote products and services to the group. I think by doing this you will have customers coming to you from all directions, you just have to stay on top and follow their wants and needs to keep up with their demand and this will require dedication on your part to keep them coming back and plus the new targets you get from word of mouth and reputation. Sounds like lots of work but dont get discouraged before long you will have a great site that autopilots its way for you and soon you will be off enjoying your passions with a good stream of income coming in and its all making you money on a large well built platform that has the feeling of a very small town comfortable site that makes the customer feel at ease. Good luck. and I will watch you grow and hope to exchange knowledge on our way.... LaRue

Ideally my goal is to reach $2,000 CAD/month as quickly as possible. From what I'm reading it'll take 3-6 months which I'm hoping I'll be able to sustain it for but that would essentially provide a comfortable life style. After that I want to rise in the ranks so to speak over time in intervals.
