You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

There is a quick search feature available to you right within the Jaaxy menu. You simply click on the menu and it will pop up the submenu, with the search available right within it.

You can see I have entered "increase vertical jump" into the search (as shown below).

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

After performing the search, you will simply want to click the "magnifying glass" icon or press enter on your keyboard.

Here are how the search results look for the "increase vertical jump" search.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. Hi, I have some ideas concerning the niche. But to get started, I'd like to do one of these 2 options:
1- health and weight loss for moms and women over 40
2- Parenting: practical tips for busy moms to help them organize their family life
What do you think? is it too general?

Thank you all for your advice and suggestions.

Hi - health is one of the top three niches, and therefore very competitive. You would really need to have a very narrow niche to be seen as an authority in this subject, and preferably a related professional qualification.

Organizing for busy families is a great idea, particularly if you have experience in this, and the readers can relate to you.

These are both good niches, although very competitive ... are there specific topics within these you could focus on?

Rather than Health and Weight Loss you might consider ... 'Weight Loss for Mom's over 40' or 'Weight Loss for Diabetics over 40' ... something like that.

Parenting is a huge topic ... narrow it down ... Parenting of ADHD, Parenting Preschoolers, Teenagers, etc.

The most important thing to think of ... what would people type into Google search to access what I am offering ...

If they type parenting ... Google will return 388 Million sites (try it ... the number of sites appears at the top of the browser under the search bar) If you search Parenting ADHD Kids it returns 37 million (1//10 the number) ... this is your competition!

Those are both good. I'm not sure which would be better honestly. You could do some searches in Google and play around with Jaaxy for keywords and see what the competition looks like. But more than that, which one is something you could write about for months or years? Which are you passionate about?

Thank you Paula, I could write about both honestly because this has been my life for the past years.
I gained between 50 and 60 pounds for each of my 4 pregnancies and managed to lose them all after each so yes I can write about it.
with 4 kids, different ages, I had to improve my personal organization, so this one could help other Moms as well.
maybe I could combine both?

Hi,
I'm trying to choose my niche but I get about a thousand ideas and can't decide what to go for.
Is there any way I can search for a few different ideas and get a bit of insight on what might be more popular than the other?

I was thinking about choosing camera bags, do you think this would be a good choice?

Hi - the most popular niches are health, love/romance and money. However, that makes them more competitive. Any niche can be successful if you apply enough time and effort to it. Remember, you will be writing a lot of content on your chosen niche, so it should be something you are genuinely interested in.

Camera bags may be a bit narrow for a niche. But first, let me explain the main criteria that I look for in a niche:

1. It must not be too narrow but should be broad enough to enable the creation of enough content, at least a hundred posts before scaling up further.
2. The niche should be such that there are enough products to promote, preferably with prices above $50. Commissions are usually in percentages, as an example a %5 commission will give you $2.50 as commission per item sold. So it makes sense for product prices to be high but not so high that there are only a few sales.
3. Must not be extremely competitive. A general niche like finance will put your site up for stiff competition from the big authoritative sites.

Instead of only writing about camera bags, you could create a site about camera accessories. This will give you enough leverage to write about other topics when you have written enough about camera bags.

Not saying that you have to write only about camera bags, you can also write about lenses, filters, tripod stands...there will be so many interesting things to write about then and your readers will also enjoy visiting your site.

Hope that makes sense. If you have any more doubts please feel free to ask. :-)

Hi, I have a question regarding free domain- I was told that using .com domains is the best in terms of SEO. I always thought that any free domains with unusual suffixes (like siterubix.com, .coach, .zoom etc.) would automatically loose with .com, .net and .org domains in Google searches.

feigner Premium
there is a little advantage using a com but it is more about relevancy nowadays for google and getting the most relevant search results in front of the searcher.
so if your content is very relevant then you will still beat a com.
start your journey here with a siterubix ( you can move all of your cotent to a domain you host here at any time with the move button) and upgrade whenever you are ready.
FYI a siterubix is a subdomain rather than a domain.
and i have subdomains ranking on page 1 of google so again there are no problems with that - it is down to the content.
have fun Anna

Anna, if you have the option to get your own domain then do it.
If you want to build a siterubix.com blog for simply practicing your writing or working on your website creation skills then fine, but why build a website and have to move it.

I have been doing this for a number of years and one thing I know for certain. Problems can arise at a moments notice. Why even give trouble an invitation? If you don't have to do it then don't

Great content or not, a real domain name is most likely going to do better in the long run, maybe you can get traffic to a siterubix domain? I won't say that's not possible, but what site would you rather go to yourself?

mywebsite.com or siterubix.com Your website is your brand and the first thing that customers will see and make a mental impression of. Like the old saying, "First Impressions are lastiing"

Make a good first impression!

Hi, so I have ideas for two niches but not sure which one to start with as I'm equally passionate about both. The first one is about creating a passive income stream for working mums e.g. through affiliate marketing. The second is about healing your autoimmune condition with food. In both cases I was thinking of including a blog recording my journey to health/wealth (it rhymes!). I would also include affiliate links to programmes, courses, websites etc which I've used and which helped andd people I found inspirational. What do you think?

hey hi Anna & welcome to Wealthy Affiliate Premium!

Super question and all questions are good ones here!

Any niche can be a successful, it just depends upon you as the on-line biz owner of how you work with it to scale ... both topics sound fine and it's truly up to you as you're the one who would need to write in-depth about it extensively to get to success.

A suggestion might be to consider your intended audience and look at it from their points of view in terms of what they would find the most helpful ....

All the very best to you for every Success, cheerio ... :)

Someone be completely honest with me, is this just a huge waste of my time?
I'm not being rude, I just want an honest answer and proof its legitimate and I'm not taking time from my family for nothing or just a few cents!
Proof as in screen shots of your progress or something along that lines. I'm not going to continue this if it's not going to help me take care of my family financially!
Not anyone that works for or is just commenting to get people to go through this....thanks, Cris 😁

I'll be completely honest with you! I haven't made any money yet! Mind you, I've only been here a week!
I reckon it's going to take: time, dedication, a lot of work, a lot of learning, tons of patience, a warrior spirit and complete belief that we can do it!
But I totally believe we can. I'm personally EXTREMELY excited to have found WA. The training is such high quality and the people are all LOVELY! There are just so many helpful people here, all wanting to assist in our success! How can you not be excited by that?!
I reckon we're extremely fortunate to be here, and I'm definitely going to do the training, stay involved with this amazing community, and see what happens. And I bet what happens will be awesome!
Wishing you the greatest happiness!

Hey, I have been here one month and three days. This is not a get rich quick scheme so if you are not in for the long run you will not see the rewards. You will not start making money instantly.....you have to follow the training exactly and build your website, learn to monetize it and give it at least six months to see some results. see my blog from yesterday on some of my accomplishments so far: Also the following is the website I am still in the process of building. It is by no means completed but so far I have made 4 sales on Amazon as the blog says:

https://besthumanhairweavesandwigs.com

I understand that you have concerns, I did too but at this point I know that I am in the best place to make money online.

I hope you stay, finish your training and get started at a real chance to make an income online. My long-term goal here is to buy or build a house for my family. If you have any other concerns do not hesitate to let me know.

Hi - yes, this is a legitimate program, but it is not a get rich quick scheme and takes months of hard work. If you intend staying as a starter member, you will only have access to the first 10 lessons. This is enough to teach you to build a website but does not go in-depth into how to drive traffic or join affiliate programs.

Even if you were to upgrade to premium, you would be unlikely to see any income for at least 3 months, and more realistically 6 months. There is a lot of writing involved, which is the reason you are encouraged to pick a topic for your website you are genuinely interested in.

Having said that, if you take the attitude of realising this is a long-term commitment to building a genuine online business, then there is money to be made. I have added a link to some success stories for you to read, but do be aware that most people prefer to keep details to themselves. After all, would you announce to complete strangers what your earnings are?

Your success will be directly linked to your effort ... this is not a get rich quick scheme, it takes time, patience, perseverance to be successful.

Affiliate marketing is not a scam ... once you have your membership paid for, you are free to use the vast resources on Wealthy Affiliate to learn and implement your online business.

All the tools are provided along with rich educational materials and a community of thousands of members willing to help.

The beauty of Affiliate Marketing is that it runs in the background for you 24/7 and can generate revenues for years with little or no effort.

Selecting a niche and developing your website will take you weeks ... gaining traffic on Google and Yahoo etcl will take weeks to months ... revenue may not be generated for a month or so ... it really depends on so many factors.

Other people's success or lack of success has no bearing on your potential ... there are far too many variables to be comparative!

This is a business ... only you can make it successful!

You're not being rude. This is a common question. And, yes, this is legit. There are many members who are successful here; just do a search for success stories. But... there are also many who are not successful. And that's to be expected. It's normal.

You must remember that this is a business like any other. It's going to take time, effort, and even some financial investment. It is most certainly not a scam, but it is definitely not Get-Rich-Quick either. It's straight-up hard work, plain and simple.

The only real difference between an online business and starting a traditional brick and mortar store on the streetcorner is the overhead involved. For example, I run my entire business out of an office in my home. I don't have to pay for a building, and my morning "commute" is basically from the bedroom to the bottom of the stairs. But how you run a business is pretty much the same.

At the end of the day, the question isn't does it work. Many of us are living proof that it does. The real question is, will it work... for you. And only you can answer that.

Just to clarify, Ambassador's do not receive payment for their efforts ... they are volunteers just like all other members. There are opportunities for Site Reviews that may generate some credits but there is no payment for being an ambassador.

If you're willing to put in the time and energy to do the work, then yes it's worth it. This isn't a get rich quick deal, and it's going to take time.

As for my proof, I work slowly and I didn't start with affiliate bootcamp (I put mine affiliate site up about 2 weeks ago and only have a WA review on it w/ the legal pages). I have my main site that I work on, and I'm not in a rush - which breaks down to, I haven't made anything w/ it bc I haven't made the effort to full on promote it.

Hi Cris. Nothing is a waste of time here and this process definitely takes time. Noting worthy comes without the time, effort, and dedication, and passion. Trust yourself, trust all the wonderful people here who are proving you every day that they can be trusted , as they are proving it to all of us.
You can trust them. You can trust the process. You can take the action to achieve all that you want to achieve. And I hope that this makes sense. Have a nice day/night!

Hi! I just joined yesterday. :) I think that like many businesses you don't really see returns until after a year. I've been in business before and attracting customers is one of the key considerations. I think it will take some time. I have family and friends that shop regularly online through places like Walmart and Amazon. I think through word of mouth, blogs and searches we may be get some kind of ROI.

Hi - do be aware that you cannot purchase anything through your own links, or ask friends or family to do so. This will get you banned from Amazon's program.
