You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

There is a quick search feature available to you right within the Jaaxy menu. You simply click on the menu and it will pop up the submenu, with the search available right within it.

You can see I have entered "increase vertical jump" into the search (as shown below).

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

After performing the search, you will simply want to click the "magnifying glass" icon or press enter on your keyboard.

Here are how the search results look for the "increase vertical jump" search.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Important Note: As a Premium member here you not only get access UNLIMITED keyword searches using Jaaxy, you get many more features that are available within Jaaxy. These include more SiteRank scans, faster results, domain search affiliate program search and much more. Jaaxy Lite is 100% Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/3 completed

I'm completely new to this online world and not so great at marketing is it better I start with a free account first and then upgraded to a premium account later after I've learned a few things? I don't want to overwhelm myself because if I do that I won't continue on because I'll be frustrated and overwhelmed

Hi - yes, of course, you can stay as a free starter member for as long as you want, but do be aware that after 7 days you lose all communication here, so you won't be able to ask questions if you get stuck.

The training is set up in a way that allows you to go at your own pace so you never need to feel overwhelmed. You can also go back to any lesson for review if need be.

If you ever feel like the training hasn't fully explained a subject, you can use the grey search bar at the top to look for more information and supplementary training.

Definitely ask questions when you have them! The community here is super helpful. Like Diane said though, you will lose the ability to communicate in 7 days if you have not yet upgraded to premium.

Good luck, Shannon

Yes I noticed that. I just have a tendency to jump to soon into things especially new things and things I don't know much about

Thank you. I'll probably end up upgrading before the day is over. LOL. I tend to also get nervous that I will miss some important information if I don't act now but in this case it would be beneficial to me and not just someone looking to get more money from me

I upgraded on my 7th day and I have never regretted it. I later went yearly so I wouldn't have to worry about that monthly payment.

They actually just started a deal on the yearly membership today! It runs through May 11th. If you upgrade to yearly premium before that day you will get the lowest possible membership fee locked in for life ;)

I just upgraded a few minutes ago. LOL. I knew I wasn't going to be able to leave any valuable information on table especially when it's being offered to me. I did monthly. I can't afford the yearly right now but I will in the near future

That is exactly what I did for about the first 9 months I was here. When their Black Friday deal came up I went with it :)

Yes, you can upgrade later, but if you take the current $299/year MAY special, you save significant money. upgrading later will cost you much more. Another thought is if you pay the $299/year now and lock that price in, you have an entire year to take your time learning at a cheaper rate without worrying about a monthly payment. Your average monthly payment will be only $25 and it will be already paid for the year.

just a question, if you are going to have more than one niche, does it need to be in one category? like for example my niche is a bracelet for women and I have a couple of other niche does it need to be other jewelry niche? or I have to build another one for a different category?

thank you.

Your niches can be totally separate or related. It's up to you. You should build a separate website for each niche. That's my take.

Hi Dianne,

Start with one narrow niche and develop it until it gets you good traffic. Then, if you are going to promote, let's say, earrings then you can add it to the same website (broaden your niche because these goods are related and the same targeted audience that is interested in the bracelets could be interested in earrings). You can assign earrings to a different category depending on your classification.

But, if you are going to a completely different niche, let's say, skincare, then create a second website for it.

Good luck,

~ Julia

Hi Dianne

Great question! If the second niche is related to womens bracelets and includes say scarves and womens clutch bags then the niche is actually as in womens fashion accessories.

If the second niche has no relation to womens bracelets, say bambillo pillows, then having a second niche website for that makes sence.

But it's better to stick with one niche website and put your effort into building that out first, and once you get some experience behind you then it's fine to scale up and consider a second niche website.

How is the training going? Let me know if you want help with that!

To edit your post, go to SiteContent. If you wrote your article there. So go to Websites (menu on the left) and you'll see SiteContent, then click on the post you want to edit and you'll see a button to edit here.

If you didn't use SiteContent, just go to the back office of your WordPress and click on posts on the left menu.

Is 'personal development' good as a niche or just way too broad? I would write on topics like productivity, mindset, habits, marriage, parenting, faith, finance. I'm confused by the advice to select a product as a niche, as I don't know what I'd narrow in on and how to write endlessly about a product? I love planners and pretty notebooks and any shabby chic home accessory or furniture items. And books. That's all I can think of when it comes to products. 🤔 I would love advice, I'm feeling stuck still!

I actually think it's a good niche. Plenty of room to write about and expand on. You have other good interests as well.

You will never find anything for personal development since people don't search for that.

Only bloggers search for that term. Real people have issues that are specific and those are the things to research...

General stuff like mindsets, habits, marriage, counseling will only cause you to struggle.

Think in terms of one issue at a time... What are the painful points of suffering for a segment of the market.

Then locate people who fit your demographics and focus on psychographics.

That group will hold the niche secret because you will learn from them what they have tried, what they know about, and what they would consider trying.

I have seen sites named "online therapy reviews" because the issue is finding the right therapy for a time period at night.

Hi Sue,

Personal development is not a niche it is actually a massive category that encompasses all kinds of topics and niches inside itself which makes it a bit more difficult to narrow.

So it is generally accepted there are 8 segments of personal development. You are going to find it difficult to cover one as I said before within one there can be several areas to cover and expand on within the one let alone the whole.

My 2 cents choose the one you are most interested in and even passionate about that you can write copious amounts on.

Do research with Google about competition in the different segments, searches and copious amounts of key words.

You will then have a much better handle on your direction.

Have fun;

Rami

Hi! Thanks for zoning in on an interest of mine, great thinking! but what on earth would I write about rage buggies? I just like riding them, I'm not at all interested in how they are made up or different models etc. I'm trying to think of the next 6 months writing about something that will engage me and I will be willing to persist at.

Hi Rami, this is interesting. What are the 8 segments please? Are you suggesting I should focus on one of the 8 segments and write about that?
Reply
Nloewen Premium
Hey Sundstorm..
I see it as an amazing niche..
But you could create a few websites from those ideas, you are having.. Dont make your website to huge of diffrent ideas.. When someone searches something in the internet..
People are looking for more detailed wisdom, wisdom is goold..

So i would suggest you take your time, and think about it a bit deeper which of those ideas that you are having you wanna focus on, with this Website..

for example= Marrige could be its own website .. But you could throw marrige and parenting together.. Which would make it a bigger niche.. And a lot more to write about..

Go details, but dont stress thinking about what to write..
Take your time, and make it simple as if you would talk to any other person..

Best of luck..

Hi Sue,

That is exactly what I am saying!!

1. Career/Business
2.Finances and Wealth
3 Friends and Family
4. Fun, Recreation and Entertainment
5. Health and Fitness
6. Love Life
7 Personal / Spiritual Development
8 Physical Environment

The strategy is to take one Segment as you can see there are at least three or 4 inner routes if not more in each segment. So you narrow further. Start with one of those inner and once comfortable with that, take on another as you move along the one segment.

Once you have come to the end of one segment you can move to encompass another segment...if you ever get there...ha ha ;

Hi Sue,

Your most welcome!! ;

That is what I meant in my first paragraph in my first reply to you.....

Personal development is not a niche it is actually a massive category that encompasses all kinds of topics and niches inside itself which makes it a bit more difficult to narrow.

Mindset and productivity can go under each one of them and actually do if you want them to. ;

Yes the most obvious for productivity (which can be a niche on its own) is Career/Business only are you not being productive in the least obvious Love life?.(you most certainly are) Mindset transcends over them all too.

I caught something when you were talking about products which you would do well to expunge from your thoughts.... at one stage in the past we differentiated between the two in the modern world there is no differentiation between a product and a service they are both now seen as the same.

Trust you are satisfied with answers!! ha ha ;

Have a good day!!

I will change my thinking on products and services thanks. So productivity could be my niche. How do you prevent boredom from writing about just 1 thing? I crave variety. Am I doomed by my need/desire to learn about different things/topics at once?
Reply
Ramco Premium
Free your mind up Sue,

Turn it on its head how about productivity but encompassing many or indeed over all segments will that not relieve the boredom and satisfy your desire to learn about many things?

It's more about what you can handle....haha ;

I was the same place you are at a week ago, I wanted to pick jewelry but it is such a wide catagory. So I am focusing on gemstones which is store pretty broad, but I intend on using keywords to drive traffic, which is the training I am doing today.
Hope this helps!
