You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword.

Keywords are going to be the “root” of all your SEO success.

First Off, WHAT IS A KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

For example, here is an example search I did in Google.

This is a keyword. I searched for something that I was looking for and Google is going to provide me with the most relevant results (see below).

When I click on one of these results, I am taken to a website that has been "ranked" in Google. If I purchase something from that page or click an ad, that website owner will make money as a result.

With your SEO and your keyword research efforts, your goal is going to be to building a list of relevant keywords to your niche, and then working to rank them in Google just like this.

There are literally MILLIONS of keywords in every niche, leading to incredible potential. And by being a member at Wealthy Affiliate and what you are going to learn here about proper "ranking techniques", you are going to have the competitive edge over your competition.

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each Post You Create Will Be Targeting a Keyword...

Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page of content that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how).

This means that every page/post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 posts = 100 target keywords = 100+ potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines exist because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson called "Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success"and I suggest you watch on keyword mastery. It is going to increase your comfort level with keywords by 100 fold!

Task 1: Perform 5 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 5 searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy Keyword Tool.

There is a quick search feature available to you right within the Jaaxy menu. You simply click on the menu and it will pop up the submenu, with the search available right within it.

You can see I have entered "increase vertical jump" into the search (as shown below).

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "basketball skills & drills", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • basketball drills
  • basketball skills
  • increase vertical jump
  • dribbling drills
  • etc

After performing the search, you will simply want to click the "magnifying glass" icon or press enter on your keyboard.

Here are how the search results look for the "increase vertical jump" search.

As you can see there are several columns of "keyword data". These are all very important when it comes to choosing keywords that are going to be useful to you.

  • Keyword. This is the search phrase that the data to the right of it is representing.
  • Avg. This is the overall monthly traffic this search term gets, globally.
  • Traffic. This is the estimated amount of traffic you will get if you rank on the first page of Google under this term.
  • QSR. Known as Quoted Search Results, this is the exact number of results in Google that you are competing with under this search phrase. In other words, this is how much competition you have.
  • KQI (Keyword Quality Indicator)

If you do a search and you don't see the full data, you simply need to click the "Get QSR" link and it will fetch the data for you. You will see that if that particular keyword has never been searched before.

Next, I want to discuss how to "choose" appropriate keywords for your content. This is critical in terms of getting ranked in Google and being the most efficient with your time. Don't worry though, it isn't all that complex. :)

The Rules of a Quality Keyword

There are a few rules that you need to follow

Rule #1: More than 30 monthly searches. You want your far left "Avg" column to ideally be greater than 30. Sometimes it is OK to go with a search volume less than this, but over 30 searches per month is ideal.

Rule #2: Less than 100 QSR (Competition). You want to keep your competition below 100 pages in Google, the lower the better though obviously. You will likely come across many terms with less than 100 QSR when doing your research, and that is even better!

As you progress with your website, under 200 is perfectly fine as you will be gaining more authority and better ranks in search engines.

Rule #3: Keyword must make sense. This is critically important. If the keyword doesn't make grammatical sense, don't use it. Do another search on the keyword that makes sense as that will likely give you different data and that is the data you want to measure.

An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords. If you have any questions about the keyword research proces, please leave them in the comments below. :)

Great lesson on building your WP website here. Just a quick question... if I get my own domain and am not going with the siterubix.com platform, does it mean I have to get separate hosting outside or will I continue to get hosting support here at Wealthy Affiliate? Was not quite clear in the above video.

I'm currently on lesson 6 of the training concerning writing articles and producing content. I'm wondering about my ability to produce articles frequently. I'm a good writer and all but I don't know if I can write compelling articles with enough frequency. I can certainly make art regularly but can I make that my business? also I was thinking of selling my t-shirts through my site.

Hi .. Just to give you a friendly heads up, WA frowns on self promotion. Posting your links on the platform in any area besides the follow me on section of your profile can get your write access revoked. Here is Kyle's post regarding spam and self promotion: You can find more info on the follow me on section here: Good luck, Shannon

That is a challenge to continually pump out quality content on a consistent basis. Some folks say "published is better than perfect" and other people publish a few high quality articles per week. You will need to find a balance. Eventually you can hire a writer to help out, when you start making some $$.

You have a head start on most people as you are already a good writer most of us are not good writers but as we go along with the training and writing posts or pages for our website we keep getting better and better along the way.

Make writing your articles steady but at your own pace, this is not a race so just pace yourself. You ca pick anything you like as your niche and that is all in the training and video's hope this helps.

Thinking about a niche - I have in mind “children’s mental health” as this is what I do for a living and could write helpful articles targeted at parents. However, is this too broad ? Would I be better off narrowing it down - maybe focussing on post pandemic mental health?

You're definitely on the right track in narrowing down children's mental health some. I think post pandemic mental health is an excellent idea.

Being in the health niche, it will definitely be helpful to include any certifications or diplomas you might have within your About Me page to show google and your audience that you are qualified to offer insights and suggestions regarding mental health.

Good luck, Shannon

Talking about niche, it is better to focus on one and differentiate yourself from your competitors. Think of it like being a big fish in a small pond.

When we target a specific target audience/target market, that means we'll have fewer competitions and can focus more of our efforts in building our business better. We won't waste time and energy rambling about so many different stuff that will confuse our readers that visit our site.

We need to build trust with both Google and our readers. We want to make sure Google see us as an authority in the chosen niche by consistently publishing fresh content (2-3 posts every week) that are helpful to your readers.

If you are following the Bootcamp Training (MMO Niche), then realistically, it will take about 400 posts to really make a serious amount of income from it. If you are publishing 2-3 posts per week, then you can expect to start appearing on Page 1 of Google around months 3-6. This can vary of course based on your keyword research and your content quality etc.

The MMO niche is very competitive so you may want to choose the OEC training, your choice. It will generally take 3-6 months before you see any real ranking/income though. It takes a lot of continuous hard work to get there either way.

Hi Kingsley, have you chosen a niche and choice of keywords

Perhaps you may like to continue building out your website and content, site will remain valid for six months.

You can also do Level One -- Affiliate Bootcamp Additionally, you may like to browse classrooms: Getting started, Affiliate Programs and the WA Affiliate Platform.

Please be aware after the seven days, your communication with the platform ceases to exist, so if you have other questions or something else on your mind, do ask.

We hope you'd be able to upgrade to Premium in the near future.

Hi there,

Great job for reaching Lesson 9.

You use the keywords you found in your posts. Keep publishing fresh content to your website consistently (2-3 posts a week). Then when you're ready, you can upgrade to Premium.

Assuming you find keywords in Jaaxy (under Research on left menu) with BOTH of this combination:
AVG > 100 (good amount of organic search per month)
QSR < 50 (fewer competitions)

For example "how to train a dog to sit"

Then you will incorporate that phrase in your title, first paragraph, and then once again near the end of your post.

Title: "3 Easy Steps: How To Train A Dog To Sit" - Always add to the title to make it enticing and reason why people should click on YOUR post on their results page.

First paragraph (within first 160 characters, this is called Meta Description):
"When first getting a new puppy, you will want to learn how to train a dog to sit when he or she is 2 - 4 months old.
I have 3 easy steps below that I'm going to go through with you so you can teach your new puppy...."

In the body of your post: anything you want.

Last section of post somewhere:
"If you have learned how to train your dog to sit, then please comment below and let me know of your results!" - or something else, anything that will bring that keyword back into your article.

When researching keywords you need to beware of Stop Words like "what is" "how to" and words like "in" "a" "on".

If you'd like to add pictures, the Site Content has integrated with sites like http://pixabay.com, http://pexels.com, http://unsplash.com where you can get royalty free images.
Once you're done writing in the Site Content, click on the ABC icon next to the Add Image icon to check for spelling, punctuation, grammar, etc.

It is also a good practice before publishing a content to check for plagiarism. You can use a free online plagiarism checker that I listed in my blog post here: You should have less than 5% duplicate content (I'd rather have 100% original content). If Google found you have duplicate content, your post won't be ranked.

Hope this helps,

Ferra
