Today is going to your first introduction to proper organization on your website. One thing that we always need to remember is that we are building our websites for PEOPLE, and our visitors and how someone would view our content and our navigation is what should dictate how we present our content.

In other words, if your website is difficult to navigate, people simply won't. The may read your content, and then just move onto another website. You can increase your website "page views" and overall website revenue if you understand proper navigiation

Introducing "Custom" Menus in Wordpress.

The default Wordpress menus work in very strange ways and can be quite awkward. Typically when you add a page, it automatically goes to the main menu. A post, will go to the homepage blog roll (not the main menu).

As a website owner, you want FULL control of your navigation as your theme by default won't do a very good job of this. Fortunately, it is quite straightforward to create Custom Menus.

Navigation is going to be a critical element to your user experience moving forward and will impact your rankings (as Google ranks sites with proper navigation better), so this is an important step here.

I have created a"Creating Custom Menus, Navigation, & Widgets" video walking you through the process of creating custom menus. You can check it out below.

Task 1: Create a Menu

There are a few simple steps to creating a custom menu. The first thing you need to understand is where to find the Menu management section within your Wordpress admin area.

Under the Appearance, click the Menus sub heading.

This will take you to the custom menu creator.

Under the left tab, you are going to see a Posts section. Posts are not added to your navigation by default, so you are going to need to click the Posts tab and it will show a list of your Posts.

In this case, we have only create the About Me post. Click the check box associated with that, and then click the Add to Menu.

**Note: Most themes by default will add Pages to the top menu, but if you don't see your Privacy Policy within the Menu Structure section, you will need to add that.

Your About Me page has now been added to your menu structure (as shown below).

Once added to your Menu Structure, you can reorganize your menu in any way you like by dragging and dropping them. In this case, I am going to add my About Kyle post above the Privacy Policy, which is going to put it to the "left" of this within the live menu on my website. So in essence, I am ordering my pages here.

Upon completing my menu order, click the "Create Menu" button and you will establish your new menu.

After you have done this, you are going to want to add your newly created menu to your website, to override the Main Menu on your site. You are going to see a new tab created after you have created your new menu called "Manage Locations".

You will want to click this tab, and then under the "Main Menu" item you are going to choose the menu you just created, in this case it is called "Main Menu". After doing that click Save Changes. You are set!

For example purposes, here is what my live website looks like with my newly updated menu.

You can see the order of the menu items and that my "About Kyle" post comes before the "Privacy Policy" post.

And we are done. It is as simple as that and as we continue to build out our website, we are going to be reorganizing our websites regularly, managing this menu and likely creating "sub menus" which we will be getting into later as we have more content on our websites.

Nice work thus far!

Okay, my idea is to have a website about knitting. Best needles to use, how to follow a pattern, how to substitute yarns, etc. I understand that by having a website I can send customers to Amazon or Etsy for supplies and earn a commission. Knitting is something I am very knowledgeable about and I have many years of experience doing. How do I use this as my niche?

Hi

You would have written 20 - 30 posts and have some traffic to be able apply for affiliate programs as typically they will check your site for relevance and traffic prior approval.

For Amazon it is 15 - 20 posts.

Once accepted, they've give you material and special tracking code links you can share on your site.

Essentially you are writing informational and review posts for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Once they do, and in accordance to your affiliation terms and conditions how commission payouts are tracked and paid.

I would always adhere to your affiliate program terms and conditions.

Further info and as stated below

hat's a great niche to be in however you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out.

You may consult with http://answersocrates.com/

Examples: crochet kit and yarn, crochet for babies, dog sweaters, doll clothes, knee warmers, pillows, lacy look cardigans, scarf oversized tees, crochet Christmas ornament patterns classes or groups for beginners etc

A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

One niche, a website.
When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?
Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience.

Really like you niche choice. It looks like you have already defined some post content you can include on your website: Best needles to use, how to follow a pattern, how to substitute yarns, Then you can write product reviews about the related products comparing them and recommending the best.

So you will write your posts and in them include related products links you receive when you get accepted into an affiliate program for which you register.

You will use Jaaxy to find the best keyword phrases to use average search volume >30 and QSR <100 and SEO >95 is best to start with.

We wish you much success.

Knitting is a great choice. Imagine passing on all your tips and tricks to help others on how to solve a problem. I, too, love knitting. I think you should do very well. It would be great if you were able to incorporate a video that shows people how to Knit.

Thanks Yvonne and everyone else for your replies!
I am finding it quite frustrating to try to narrow down my niche.

Maybe I am on the wrong track, about how to make this work for me. I need to take a break and think about all I have learned so far. It’s a lot of information to think about.

Slow and steady wins the race, isn't that a bit of time? A stitch in time also nine don't forget. Just be yourself and keep the ball rolling. Niche isn't something difficult or confusing. If perhaps you want to narrow down on your niche, just be You and enjoy

I love that idea for a niche website. I have no idea how to knit! I would be a frequent visitor to your site if I ever wanted to become more knowledgeable about knitting!

You can cover as much of the topic as you want in time. What we are all trying to say when we suggest narrowing your niche is to find a segment that is smaller so you can cover it extensively and then expand. This way you will get visitors that are really interested in what you have to say because they are looking for something specific. When visitors don't find something specific they will leave the site. your goal is to capture a specific group so they become your followers for the topic.

After you take a break, how about doing a google search on knitting and crocheting. You will find several auto suggested segments. maybe one of those will be just the place to start. And then remember you can expand to cover more later.

Here's to your success.

I saw that Premium Plus was only $30 a month and will that stay or will it change to $49 a month. The regular Premium starts out just for the month as $19 and than changes to $49. Do you have a discounted price for a yearly premium instead of month to month? Just curious to know.

Hi
The first 7 days are free
After which you pay a discount for the Premium of $19 and then $49 monthly.

The Premium plus is $49 for the month initially and then $99 monthly

We have a yearly discount in November, which is our regularly Black Friday special

I also believe that there will be a yearly special next month, however, you need to listen for that announcement.
I hope this helps

Hi, discounted prices may happen later in the year however as of now nothing is announced.

For the first seven days you can test drive platform full premium access to see if it fits with your business needs and objectives.

As and when you decide to become a Premium, your first month would be $19 then $49 monthly afterwards until you cancel

Or $49 first month then $99 monthly afterwards for premium plus + tier subscribers.

Premium is $19 for the first month and then it changes to $49 per month.

There's no discount on Premium or Premium Plus yearly subscription yet. However, there should be a promotion maybe next month (according to Kyle). Once it starts, Premium and Premium Plus yearly options will be probably 30 - 50 % cheaper!

Hi! I think I'm having technical problems with my site or something...
- I tried to upload a picture with the "About Me" post and I don't
see it anywhere.
- I also created the "Privacy Policy" page but I just change the
design theme of the site and now I don't see the Privacy Policy
page.

So I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or is it a technical problem.

Can somebody help me? :(

HI is it in your media library?

If you edited a document in site content and published it, future edits has to be done in WordPress. Site content and WordPress work independently.

I'd place my images in a document in site content and publish it to my site. it will be added to my WordPress media library.

If you published your 'about me' post in site content and then tried to add the picture there, it won't work. Any edits/additions after publishing would have to be done in wordpress directly.
As for your privacy policy, try rebooting and go back in again or clearing your browser cache and look again.

Is not on my media library. Actually I don't see anywhere now, not even in the dashboard.

I'll try to do that next time. Thank you

Hello, so I started today with what I thought was a niche in mind, but now it looks too broad. I'm thinking about narrowing it down. What my idea was initially was making a site that talked about being the best dad you can be. I have a lot of experience with this with 7 kids. And so I was thinking of going through tons of different topics/products, but I now see that this might be too broad. What I'm trying to say is, how should I narrow this?

Hi, that's great so it is parenting, you're wanting discuss one subcategory of parenting you can consult with http://answersocrates.com/ starting out.

For example
Styles, Causes, clashes, associations, love and logic, struggles, love and limits, intent, depression, attachement, child development, school achievement - Also what age of children you niche subject belongs to.

Once site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to discuss another subcategory. A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

One niche, a website.
When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So, maybe going in on something like writing about cribs/cradles, which could tie in with sleeping and training the baby to sleep. Then, later when I do make the Dynamic Dad's blog, I could reference the crib/cradle site when I talk about that stuff.

Yes, you certainly do have the experience behind you. What a neat education. So is there something in particular that seems easiest and most interesting of your experiences.

When starting out it is easiest to creates 100 + blogs when the content is your experience.

You are right, parenting is such a broad topic.

soolve.com is another tool you could use. to help narrow your niche.

I think it's always a good idea to narrow things down, but I think it is always good to not narrow things down too much. I don't know how many people are going to be looking for products to become the best father they can be, and I think that description is a little vague and utterly depends on the customer's own standards on what a good father is.

I think for your case it will definitely help to narrow this down a little, but I'm just starting out with the program so I might not have the best advice. But also, kudos to raising 7 kids, my father had enough trouble raising me let alone 7 :)

These are the products you would be promoting vs a niche subject, perhaps you are wanting discuss a safety concern with specific types, where are they sourced, maintenance etc, who is going to benefit most from what you have to offer, it is still broad and need be narrowed down further.

That is a great niche and it's one that you use your personal experience with. Though it seems like its broad what you share will be unique. What is key to remember is finding the keywords to write your articles around.

Many parent bloggers will not have the experience that you have here. You are in a great place to learn and have success.

A few ideas to ponder - travelling with teen, toddlers, etc
- activities
- meditation
- healthy food
- education
- bonding with kids

There are so many sub niches and you can start with one and add categories to your website. You'll learn all that here too :)
