Today is going to your first introduction to proper organization on your website. One thing that we always need to remember is that we are building our websites for PEOPLE, and our visitors and how someone would view our content and our navigation is what should dictate how we present our content.

In other words, if your website is difficult to navigate, people simply won't. The may read your content, and then just move onto another website. You can increase your website "page views" and overall website revenue if you understand proper navigiation

Introducing "Custom" Menus in Wordpress.

The default Wordpress menus work in very strange ways and can be quite awkward. Typically when you add a page, it automatically goes to the main menu. A post, will go to the homepage blog roll (not the main menu).

As a website owner, you want FULL control of your navigation as your theme by default won't do a very good job of this. Fortunately, it is quite straightforward to create Custom Menus.

Navigation is going to be a critical element to your user experience moving forward and will impact your rankings (as Google ranks sites with proper navigation better), so this is an important step here.

I have created a"Creating Custom Menus, Navigation, & Widgets" video walking you through the process of creating custom menus. You can check it out below.

Task 1: Create a Menu

There are a few simple steps to creating a custom menu. The first thing you need to understand is where to find the Menu management section within your Wordpress admin area.

Under the Appearance, click the Menus sub heading.

This will take you to the custom menu creator.

Under the left tab, you are going to see a Posts section. Posts are not added to your navigation by default, so you are going to need to click the Posts tab and it will show a list of your Posts.

In this case, we have only create the About Me post. Click the check box associated with that, and then click the Add to Menu.

**Note: Most themes by default will add Pages to the top menu, but if you don't see your Privacy Policy within the Menu Structure section, you will need to add that.

Your About Me page has now been added to your menu structure (as shown below).

Once added to your Menu Structure, you can reorganize your menu in any way you like by dragging and dropping them. In this case, I am going to add my About Kyle post above the Privacy Policy, which is going to put it to the "left" of this within the live menu on my website. So in essence, I am ordering my pages here.

Upon completing my menu order, click the "Create Menu" button and you will establish your new menu.

After you have done this, you are going to want to add your newly created menu to your website, to override the Main Menu on your site. You are going to see a new tab created after you have created your new menu called "Manage Locations".

You will want to click this tab, and then under the "Main Menu" item you are going to choose the menu you just created, in this case it is called "Main Menu". After doing that click Save Changes. You are set!

For example purposes, here is what my live website looks like with my newly updated menu.

You can see the order of the menu items and that my "About Kyle" post comes before the "Privacy Policy" post.

And we are done. It is as simple as that and as we continue to build out our website, we are going to be reorganizing our websites regularly, managing this menu and likely creating "sub menus" which we will be getting into later as we have more content on our websites.

Nice work thus far!

Have you tried to log out ans sign in? Sometimes it's just a glitch. Otherwise you can try to create a new post from scratch, not from the template.

If it is published, you can edit any content directly within your website back office at any time.

To edit posts or pages on your website, you will need to log into the back office of your website. You can do this through the SiteManager (Websites => SiteManager).

https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/websites

Within your back office, you will have a tab for both Posts and Pages within your main menu. (see attached). You will simply want to click on either one of those, to see a full list and to manage your respective Posts and Pages associated with your website.

Upon going into the Posts or Pages manager, you will see a list of all of them. You can edit them by "hovering" over top of the post, and then you will click on the "Edit" button. (see attached)

You can Quick Edit, Trash or View them from this hover menu. You can also click the main post or page title if you want to go into the editor.

I hope this helps you out here!

Hi. If I already have a domain name. Can I connect via this platform and create my webpage, get the plugins, optimize for google etc (if I have Premium) and run my site as normal?

Then further down the road if I need to move my site out of this platform for some reason, is this possible?
Thank you for your help!

Yes you can. Just go to "websites", then select domains, go to your domain provider and add ns1.mywahosting.com and ns2.mywahosting.com to your DNS.
Personal I use Ecwid site builders as a plug in so I can place it wherever I want. Woocommerce is also a good choice

Thank you JGatlin3, seems easy enough.
But what happens if I sell my business in the future? Is it easy to "go back to" not being a part of WA?

Do I own my own domains in WA and have full access to them even if I am not part of WA in the future?

Kind regards!

Hi Susanna,

WA will only keep a backup of your website(s) for up to 60 days, so if you return within that time, they can be restored.

If you think you will be gone longer than 60 days, or if you want to keep your website online, you will want to take your own backup and maybe find another host for your website and move it before your Premium membership expired.

You can move your website to ANY host you want if you were to ever want to move or cancel here. If you don't pay for your domain on an annual basis (ie, let it lapse), it goes back into the domain pool with the rest of the available domains out there.

I'm wondering how I should move forward with my niche selection. I very much enjoy travel and wish to choose this niche but I think it may be extremely competitive for rankings/traffic. Is this a lot to tackle for a newbie?

Instead, would it be "easier" to go with something more simple such as a beauty niche like nails/hair/facials? I am not interested in this as much but it seems to be pinpointed somehow.

Thank you Kindly for any input anyone might have on this.

Hi - whatever you decide upon should be something you are genuinely interested in, as you will have to write a lot of content about it.

Travel is competitive, so you would need to narrow it down to have less competition, such as choosing a specific region, or concentrating on a type of vacation, such as cruises for seniors, or city breaks for foodies etc.

If you are not really interested in the beauty niche, then you will probably get bored with researching and writing about it every week for the forseeable future.

Hi, Katherine, I believe it is better to go with a niche you're passionate about. You may want to break travel into a sub category niche.

To put it in perspective would you be writing about it in five years time.

Here's a resource may be you'd like look at You can use Jaaxy to drill down keywords. Look for searches (avg.) above 30 and competition (qsr. ) lower than 100, the lower the qsr the better.

Also there is a place on my website that says 'just another WordPress site' please how do I change that and what sud I change that to?

you can create a home button in the menu section.
To remove the dummy text you need to login into your website back office and remove the texte manually. It is explained in the training videos.
Good luck

Newbie here, can this training help me launch another company that I am an ambassador for? It provides health/diet and weight-loss supplements as well as nutrition supplements for children too! The compensation plan is indeed a "pyramid" scheme, but if I can promote my ambassador website and generate sales there easily instead of bothering family/friends, that would be great! If not, it's okay, just would like to know where else this skill could take me!

You can promote anything you like on your website. If you want to promote a MLM that you are involved in, that is up to you. As you go through the training you will learn how to write content/articles about your "niche".

If these supplements fit within your niche, you can post articles about them and refer your readers to a link to a sales page or for more information. There is a world of possibilites, limited only by your imagination ;)

Thank you for the information and encouragement! I would definitely promote this company and their products because I've personally used them. I'd consider them a high-ticket product because they are a bit pricey, but I'm confident that those who are serious about getting healthy and living a stress-free lifestyle?-these products are the perfect tool! Again, Thank you!
