Today is going to your first introduction to proper organization on your website. One thing that we always need to remember is that we are building our websites for PEOPLE, and our visitors and how someone would view our content and our navigation is what should dictate how we present our content.

In other words, if your website is difficult to navigate, people simply won't. The may read your content, and then just move onto another website. You can increase your website "page views" and overall website revenue if you understand proper navigiation

Introducing "Custom" Menus in Wordpress.

The default Wordpress menus work in very strange ways and can be quite awkward. Typically when you add a page, it automatically goes to the main menu. A post, will go to the homepage blog roll (not the main menu).

As a website owner, you want FULL control of your navigation as your theme by default won't do a very good job of this. Fortunately, it is quite straightforward to create Custom Menus.

Navigation is going to be a critical element to your user experience moving forward and will impact your rankings (as Google ranks sites with proper navigation better), so this is an important step here.

I have created a video walking you through the process of creating custom menus. You can check it out below.

DISCUSS VIDEO: Creating Custom Menus and Navigation

Task 1: Create a Menu

There are a few simple steps to creating a custom menu. The first thing you need to understand is where to find the Menu management section within your Wordpress admin area.

Under the Appearance, click the Menus sub heading.

This will take you to the custom menu creator.

Under the left tab, you are going to see a Posts section. Posts are not added to your navigation by default, so you are going to need to click the Posts tab and it will show a list of your Posts.

In this case, we have only create the About Me post. Click the check box associated with that, and then click the Add to Menu.

**Note: Most themes by default will add Pages to the top menu, but if you don't see your Privacy Policy within the Menu Structure section, you will need to add that.

Your About Me page has now been added to your menu structure (as shown below).

Once added to your Menu Structure, you can reorganize your menu in any way you like by dragging and dropping them. In this case, I am going to add my About Kyle post above the Privacy Policy, which is going to put it to the "left" of this within the live menu on my website. So in essence, I am ordering my pages here.

Under Menu Settings, I am also going to make the "Display" location, Main Menu. Check this box as this will put this menu as your main navigation at the top of your page.

Upon doing this, click the "Save Menu" button and you are set.

For example purposes, here is what my live website looks like with my newly updated menu.

You can see the order of the menu items and that my "About Kyle" post comes before the "Privacy Policy" post.

And we are done. It is as simple as that and as we continue to build out our website, we are going to be reorganizing our websites regularly, managing this menu and likely creating "sub menus" which we will be getting into later as we have more content on our websites.

Nice work thus far!

I have created the About Me and published as a post, all good. I have also created the Privacy page and saved it as a page BUT it is showing a comments box at the bottom of the page when I preview it. I'm sure I saved it as a Page and can't see how to get rid of the comment box. Any thoughts appreciated.

My niche i chose something important to me. Allergies. I am dividing them into the four seasons and focusing on that time of year along with tips to help ease symptoms. with the exception of seasonal foods, most foods are year round and I am including recipes, tips and reviews of products to help people cope with their allergies

That's a good idea to have the seasonal component in there. It seems like that will help keep your content fresh once you get a few months into writing content.

Hi guys! So I am transitioning out of the Marines here soon. Big things that have always engrained into me is staying physically fit and my love of sports. That’s what I excel in but they are both such huge topics. I’m having a hard time choosing between these two fields! Any advice would be awesome!!!

As a fellow Jarhead veteran I would focus on staying fit but putting your own personal brand to it because it's such a competitive niche. Maybe make a site that relates to a military type of bootcamp for beginners or something. Hope that helps. Semper Fi Mac Daddy

Great to have you here Joshua! :)

You can definitely head in staying fit or sports, but you will want to narrow down to a specific aspect of either when choosing your niche.

When deciding on a niche and trying to narrow down to a more specific niche, I recommend you ask yourself the following question:

I want to help people that ______________.

Fill in the blank and you are going to be much closer to a specific audience. After you do this and if you want to run any further ideas by me, let me know and I will give you a hand. :)

I've decided to use a family member's expertise for the niche. My cousin has a beauty salon. Figured there's a great market there and good scope for promoting products. She provides the content ideas and I do the work on here researching and implementing. Then hopefully we split the earnings.

Hi guys looking for feedback on choosing my niche. As you might see by my profile pic I have and ride horses. I was thinking to target "new horse owners", but wondering if this is too broad? I know when I started out I was looking for all sorts of advice, products etc. across lots of different areas, can/should one website try and cover lots of areas but specifically for people who are new to horse ownership? Any thoughts most appreciated?
Reply
Zappades Premium
I don't know if the new horse owners is a great niche. You might know better, do horse owners buy a lot of things on the internet? I would imagine they rather go somewhere they can touch things and talk, isn't this more the people leaving the house?
Reply
I suppose I come at it from a different angle as I live in the country and we don't have any local stores to buy from pretty much all my stuff comes from online. I was more concerned about how broad this niche is - as a new owner you might need/want info and products on saddlery, health, fitness, grooming products, feed, etc Is that just too much to cover in one site?
Reply
I think "new horse owners is not too broad, I think it is a great starting point , and you can increase your audience from there.

Heidi, as a horse owner myself since I was 12 and I am in my 50s now, we also do not have any tack shops close to us. The Feed Stores have horse stuff I would not buy often, except for fly spray and dewormers. For myself, I like a huge selection to pick from, when it comes to an online store. However, if you are building a AFFILIATE site, you are not actually running a store. You would be writing information for horse owners, and putting affiliate links to horse supply stores in your posts and or pages. I think it's very doable, to build a site specifically for new horse owners, based on your own experience and from research you will have to do as well. Just think of the fun of researching horse products, getting affiliate connections for them and placing them in your site for other horse owners to shop from :) I did that with a dog site based on my experience and from research. Go for it :)

I like your idea. I think as a non-horse owner, but i would love to be where i could possibly have one someday, but I am terrified of the big animals, that maybe things like training people to be around a new horse, what it takes to house one, how to put on saddles, then maybe what kind of stuff it will require, maybe foods, then later each thing you write could have a sub category linked from it. there is a lot you can do with this subject. it will also give you a lot of options for affiliate links also. I think it is a great idea for the newby to get to know it takes before they just jump into it and leaves you lots of room for growth

Thanks for the input Maddy, I'm looking forward to building the site and have decided this is my niche market.

Hi, I read around the internet that you have to write a disclosure where you explain to your readers that you added affiliate links, so you will earn a commission if the visit o purchase via the link you posted. The example in the video doesn't show any disclosure. So here's the question: does one have to insert a disclosure? I joined shop style collective as an affiliate and they require #ad #commissionlink if you post on Instagram or Pinterest.
Can someone do a little clarity, please?
Reply
MsMerry Premium
Not sure on your second question but some do ask that you put a disclosure on your site. I did a short one as one company suggested this. You can put it in header or footer. It can be short and sweet like just two sentences. I have seen a few that were short and light-hearted. Hope that helps.
I am sure someone else will jump in and help on the 2nd part here. :)

Thank you @MsMerry, I opted for the footer, because it's not too invasive. I'm still working on my blog, it's not published yet... I'll take the whole course before launching it!

I would recommend that you publish content as you create it Arianna. There's no sense holding back content and the sooner you get it published, the sooner your website is going to start to get indexed and ranked into Google (and other search engines).

I had to put this on hold for the past two days as again I am always unsure of what I can do best or what interests me the most. I can think of many things and to be honest I am still not 100% sure. However I look at everything I do on a daily basis, what I touch on a daily basis and what i cannot go without (almost) on a daily basis and that is lipstick or lipgloss. I have a collection of almost 30 lipsticks and I love them! I think I will start with that and see where and how far I will evolve with my niche(s).

It doesn't even have to be waitress you most, if you are deciding between a few it is just a matter of choosing a starting point for your business.

Down the road, as you get a grasp of the formula for success, you are going to be able to tackle many different niches at once. That is the exciting part about this business.

Lips could be your niche, and you could cover everything related to Lipstick, application thereof, gloss, etc.

Does any of the other extensions like .net, .org, me (and many others) have and relevance when a website is launched in the search engines. Not sure if I am asking this question correctly. I was looking for a domain and .com was not available the the others were??? Thank you for helping me understand this.

Yes, .org/.net are also good domain names if the .com is not available. .com websites are typically the best as they are the most brandable and they tend to rank the best.

If the others are the only ones available and there isn't an established brand already on the .com version of the domain. go for it.

And i dont have the headline bars like what Kyle is showing in the video for About me & Privacy Policy. Is it because of the theme that I have chosen? (Twenty Seventeen theme.)

Yeah, some themes by default don't show pages in the header menu.

You can add these custom menus to organize your top menu in any way in which you like, as well as create sub-menus (for themes that will support this). You can also use these custom menus to add within your side widgets on your website (within your sidebar).

Here is a tutorial on how to create custom menus: I use custom menus on all of my websites (over-ride that default menu). It allows much more control and organization....both good things!

I initially had a hard time coming up with a niche. Then i decided to take the training at it word. Don't make it rocket science. Don't think too hard about it. It's right there at the forefront of your mind. You just need to sit in a quiet place and think of what makes you happy. There is your niche. At least one of them. Could someone please read this and tell what they think, and tell me how I could fix the font size, and the line space between my name and website?

MY INTRODUCTION

Hey, welcome to My Hair Care Solution. Long story short, it has been an interest of mine to find an online business that will work for me, in the past, I have tried other online businesses but I haven’t had any luck. After looking around for a while, I came across a trustworthy online affiliate company, where I had the option of helping people find the best products available.

WHY I WANT TO HELP PEOPLE

I would like to help African American women who have experienced problems with finding the best hair care products and hair styles, to help with their hair breakage or thinning edges, because I myself have also struggled with it. Over the past few years, I have decided to use less heat to my hair and I have tried to find hairstyles and hair products that would help my hair, and help others. It is my mission to find the best natural hair care products for African women.

THE PURPOSE OF MY WEBSITE

The purpose of my website is to help African American women find the best hair care products, and to succeed and help those who are trying to start an online business.

That intro is fine, MarDaesha, except for one grammatical error. "will work for me, in the past," should be "will work for me. In the past,"

When you ask about font size and line spacing, I presume you mean on your website? Has that to do with your site header or content on a specific page?
Reply
Maddy55 Premium
We can't see any font issues here in your post, because it will look different on your website than it does here in the WA course. I would suggest that you take out the template titles like My Introduction, Why I want to help people and The purpose of my website... those are only meant as guidelines to write your about me page. I am confused as to what your niche is.. is it hair care for African American women or is it as a Referral site for WA? Since you are here in the niche Certification course, I assume your focus will be on hair? The Bootcamp course is to build a website that focuses on referrals to WA. Your readers will be confused as to why caring for African American women's hair is connected to building a website in WA. It sounds like your interest is hair, so I would stick to that. You could place WA ads on your site though and or devote a seperate page just for WA (that's what I did, just in case anyone was interested ). Hope this makes sense. You write well, so I have every confidence that you will succeed in building a beautiful website when you're done :)
Reply
My niche is about trying to find the best natural hair care products for African American women. In my introduction, I only brought the Affiliate website into it, because I didn’t know what else I could say to get into my niche. What do u suggest as to what my last sentence should be for the introduction, and if I get rid of the template titles it probably wouldn’t make sense.

Many themes do not allow for comments on pages, but all posts by default will allow for comments. My recommendation would be to create everything as a post moving forward as comments are ideal for engagement, trust and ranking on your website.

What you may want to do is copy this content into a post and publish it, then you can delete the page. That would be easiest.

Hope this helps you out here!

I just published my About Me page - that was empowering! Well it is when I can incorporate my WHY into it !!!
Question:
1. I've been writing for Social Media, notably facebook, for so long now and emoji use is common. I have a few ✅ in there to break up the black text - is this good or bad?
2. I know images come in later lessons, can I keep or remove the emoji's? and should I remove them, is it because that is the job of images?
3. I've toned it down compared to Facebook, this is the paragraph:
At the age of 40 something changed, I had a health wake-up call and changed my nutrition regime. I learned from elite athletes, what the best were doing, around performance, recovery and nutrition. I noticed more energy, better performance, better recovery and more enjoyment! ✅ Now in my late 40’s I am full of energy, relishing what I can still do and passionate about this, healthy living and helping others to achieve my same sense of energy and vitality✅. Hey, I even made a comeback to running events, achieving the same pace/kilometer!!✅ as I had when I retired from running at age 35. Wow! ✅ I was not expecting this!!

Hi,

When you are in your website back page, where the menu is on the left hand side of the screen, there should be a tab called MEDIA. Click on that. It will show you all of the media (pictures, videos) that you loaded up to your website. You can delete picture and video content there from your entire website.

Or, if you want to keep a picture but don't want it in your post any more you can delete it from the post:
when you are in your post or page you are creating, you can just click on the photo and hit the delete button, and it will remove it from your post.

Privacy page. You want to create a new page and title it your Privacy Policy. Then, just go online and find a privacy policy you can copy and past into the new page. You will need to update the name and information in the policy content to reflect your website.

You can find a Generic Privacy Policy here at this link provided by Kyle: These first few lessons can be confusing as you jump in and learn to navigate and do things on a website. It will get easier, much easier... push through. Ask questions.

Best of luck!

If you want to put your about page/post under a category, it's fine.
On my site, I have created it as a page and it has not any category at all.
Reply
Maddy55 Premium
I use the categories only for readers to be able to find my articles easier, especially for older posts or continued articles. There is a box beside your editing page that gives you the choice of adding categories. It will also have a uncategory choice that you will see has a check mark. Uncheck it and put in your own category. I found that category box very confusing at first. For instance, if you have written an article about fungus toe nails, you could add the title of your fungus toe article as a category and also add another one related like 'treat toe fungus' or the like, it's just to help your readers find subjects they are interested in. In my opinion, Your About Me should really be a Page instead of a Post, so it can go into your Menu. The majority of websites have their About Me as a page and sits in the Menu. Does this make sense? P.s- You will have to have a 'Category' widget on your landing page in order to benefit from even having categories, other wise your readers cannot access your categories. Some Themes put in the 'latest comments' or 'categories' widgets in by default, mine does.

You can add the posts on the menu as well.

In the beginning, I would create 3-4 main categories and create relevant posts.

It would be better for the structure of the site. As it gets bigger, you can add more categories and relevant content.

For example, my site promotes Wealthy Affiliate. I had 3 categories in the beginning.

Ways to make money online
Affiliate marketing
and Reviews

All the articles were under these categories. Now, I have 6-7 categories and 130 posts.

Do not worry so much about one post or page. The about me page can be under a category as a post or with no category as a page. Both of them are just fine.

The categories should help you to grow your site and your readers to understand the structure. Find a way to make it easy for you and them.

I hope it helps.

My posts are in the Menu but are in the menu under 'Home'. My Home is my landing page. I spoke from the stance of my own niche which is all things dog related. My posts are in such a variety of categories every week, that I couldn't possibly only have 6 or 7 categories. I put the categories in after I write my post. I have lost count how many categories I have. I do try to minimize them but my post subjects are so varied, it's impossible for my site. I think it really depends on what kind of site one has. Dogs are really complicated! LOL!

Yes, all of them have this category. It's fine to have many categories. I mentioned my site as an example. There are many ways to structure a site and yes, every site should be different.

If you can work with your site as you want, everything is fine.

I feel I'm missing something. I thought my most important pages should all be in my main menu on the top of my site. But maybe I should just write a post and create a category for it on my side bar? I'm a bit confused how should I do this and how to organise my site.

I am not sure why you do not add the important pages on the main menu.

Go to your dashboard -> appearance -> menus and add to the main menu the pages or the posts you want.

I prefer to keep it simple. I add on the menu and the sidebar only the really important articles of my site and help the visitors to find what they are looking for.

For example, on my site, the visitors look for a way to make money or start a business. This is exactly what they can find. Wealthy Affiliate will help them to get started and I show them how to find it.

G'day, I have watched all videos of your program up to this point. It would be kind of good to know what the end result of website would look like. I think in planning a website you should know what the end goal is. What is it that my final project will look like. This would help in what I should write in my Site content.

People share their websites as they wish, many people do and you will see them within their profiles while many people like to keep their content and activities private (in fear their ideas will get stolen).

Here are the sites I use within the training that are both very successful:

waystoavoidscamsonline.com
howtolosebellyfattoday.com

And here is one Jay is using within his Live Classes as a case study that is also very profitable:

footballsnackhelmets.com

The training here will walk you through the EXACT process of building a very successful site, with no experience. We walk you through the proper steps you should take, give you the tasks within the lesson that will lead to the creation of your business, and we provide you with all the tools, training, websites, hosting, support and networking here within WA to create, grow and manage your business online.

The only missing piece is you and your hard work. If you ever need any help as you move through the training, just ask. You have a ton of support here within the community, myself included.

Anywhere between $500 to 1000

How much would you be ecstatic earning?
$1500 or more

And how much TIME are you willing to invest to achieve these goals?
As much time as it takes because right now this is my main focus until it can run automatically.

HI everybody , I have never done this before so would rather ask questions and get it right, than ask none and get it wrong.

When setting up the website are you setting it up to make the sales, or is it just an informative website then sell through ads?

The demos I have watched are completely different to what I am doing? (I think)
Reply
Hammer11B Premium
The way you set it up is entirely up to you but the format that they teach here is that you aren't selling anything. The idea is to be a place where your readers can find help or information about your niche. You will learn how to monetize that content as you get further into thew lessons.

Helo Jcc I just started a few weeks ago. I think either way is the correct answer. My understanding is that we are 1) setting up sites that provide useful content that we will add to every week or so or however often you want to add info to. 2) You may want to setup a sight to capture mainly just sales, something like the "Football Snack Helmet" site that I saw demonstrated via this site.
My main focus is to find those Niche's that I an interested in and will provide content on on a weekly basis, as I try to create a following and drive people to my site.
Hope that helps.

Hi, there are multiple ways to make money through sites, one is by affiliate links, this is a link that you embed in your content that points to a production on a site like Amazon that you are associated with and when a visitor clicks on the link and buys something you get a commission. Another way is by hosting advertising, another is by click links that pay you per click on their site link on you page. You will learn all of this here and more. Hope you success here, Rick

Affiliate Marketing is basically connecting buyers to sellers. You are the middle man. The buyer is usually on the fence when they heard or saw a new product and they are typically interested to know more.

But, they won't trust the company immediately... and who do they trust? Affiliate marketers! People who actually tried and tested the products.

So, as affiliate marketers, we give quality information (like knowledge and experience about the product). You instill confidence in the buyer, and you eventually lead them to buy the products through your affiliate link.

I hope this will allow you to understand what affiliate marketing is all about and your responsibility as an affiliate marketer.

I am first writing the generic content for my site with the core ideas and concepts and when this is in place I will put specifics with links to affiliate products into the site. I am going to do research to include links to many sites that I have gathered information from and include them as the beginning of the ranked linking system that is what drives your site to the top of google which seems to be the standard measure of your success as an authoritative site.

I have been very busy writing and rewriting content for my new site. Because of the nature of my material I am not comfortable writing and rewriting online. I have always been a person with strong opinions of the law and on the opposite side of the law what is right and what is wrong. The two are seldom compatible. So I am tempering my knowledge and experience with a little bit of candor. I have never done anything I believed was wrong or would harm others. However what is legal and what is just, or right, are often two different things. I do not want to involuntarily say anything that might get myself or someone else in trouble.

Hi again, I may be being really stupid but exactly how do you get paid? if someone goes on my site and I talk about something they would like to buy off amazon say then how does amazon pay me? I haven't linked in my bank details or anything so unsure still how it works. Also how do I put in suggestions on what I think would benefit people? is it just by using the key words or do I have to put on links to their websites etc.
Reply

Keyword research will guide you as far as what you choose to write about. If you recommend something that is available on amazon you will send your visitors there with an affiliate link so are credited with any sales made from that visit.
amazon will tell you in their affiliate agreement exactly how you will get paid.
Reply

Don’t go calling yourself stupid! Lol that’s what all the training is for :)

As you continue through the training you’ll get a better understanding of how affiliate programs work. When you’re part of an affiliate program, say through amazon for example, and one of your readers clicks through one of your links taking them to amazon where they buy the product, that link of yours they clicked through is a specific affiliate link they’ve given you that tracks that purchase and that’s how amazon knows to pay you a commission.

When you become an affiliate through whichever merchants you choose, you set up your PayPal info for example and as your commissions add up the merchants sends them to your PayPal account :)

Thanks Eric that's great! I've just finished the part on training about key words. Don’t worry. Kyle gives you everything you need when you need it. There’s no point yet in connecting to an affiliate program when you’re just learning about how to research content the right way :) content is king, and as you start learning how to research and structure your reviews and posts, you’ll be introduced into finding affiliate programs for your niche. you’ll get there. One step at a time.

You will get your affiliate links from the affiliate program you join. They'll just give you a page where you can find your link(s), and possibly even customize them for tracking!

The courses have you create a website with content and traffic before doing any affiliate stuff. This is so you can build a strong foundation to your business before trying to make money from the site. A site with affiliate links and no content will have a hard time ranking, but a website with traffic coming in already can be monetized pretty well in just a few days.

I hope someone can clarify something for me. After watching the examples given on the "How to Make Money Online" video, I understand completely how you would profit from the NFL snack helmets, seeing as the website focuses solely on that product. However, in the example of the supplements, if your website sent them to bodybuilders and they went off on miscellaneous shopping (say they bought weight loss products instead), is there still a commission to be made? Or, say they bought a supplement but it was different than the one they clicked on your website in the first place? I may be over thinking things, but thanks in advance!

I personally think that anything related to fashion (shoes, clothing, and accessories) as you mentioned is a great niche and topic to talk about. New fashion trends are always popular especially among young adults/teens I believe! If you can keep up with fashion trends and what is modern I think it is definitely a great idea!

But most importantly, find something that you really enjoy so its fun for you to promote and talk about!

I'm with you in the niche of healthy eating. My reasoning is due to many health problems, I had a friend that referred me to watch a documentary and when I did, it literally changed my life forever! It was one about clean eating and what the foods we eat do to our bodies, it really opened my eyes and gave me the hope of a longer life. Whole food plant based eating, and avoiding animal products and byproducts, processed food and how our bodies react to different foods. If you haven't already watched these I'd def recommend watching them especially with it regarding the niche you're watching to dive into! 'What the Health', 'Cowspiricy' and 'Sick, fat and nearly dead' all are very good, if you'd like I can send you the link to the trailer, I actually just posted it on my fb page so my friends could watch it, bc it's just mind blowing. Much appreciated. Thank you.

I have been eating a lot healthier for the past 8 years. Primarily due to my family being genetically inclined to be obese. Secondarily due to having kids and wanting to be in the best health for them and hubby.

I love how good food makes you feel. Your body actually craves it (crazy huh).

I have been able to help others do the same for free but interested in earning from it too. (Ha)

Absolutely❣ It is crazy how your body begins craving something that once tasted awful, but bc of the body's benefit it got from that food it then begins to be a wonderful taste. That alone excites me in beginning my journey with becoming vegan, it's incredible when we truly think of the power of our minds, and the power we have simply by rewarding our bodies, minds, spirit and souls. When we put it that way we then allow ourselves to soak up incredible knowledge and perform immense personal growth

LOL, that is the proper "english" pronunciation.

Southern America does pronounce things differently sometimes.

Program = PRO gram (not prawgram)
Process = PRO cess (not prawcess)

Quiche = KEESH (not kitch)
Niche = NEESH (not nitch)

You will find that most of the world outside of the US will pronounce these words in their correct manner. :)

Lol, that makes me laugh, bc during a vaca in Vegas I was sitting next to an Englishman and told him how much I love the accent in the UK, and he replied without missing a beat, "Yes, it is the proper English tongue, but you Americans went and f'd it all up."

LOL I completely understand what you mean. "niche" has 3 pronunciations.

Merriam-Webster: nich also ˈnēsh or ˈnish
2a : a place, employment, status, or activity for which a person or thing is best fitted finally found her niche
and
2d : a specialized market
would seem to apply.

I prefer the nich (nitch) pronunciation. The neesh sound really bothers me.

As for "process", pro·cess \ ˈprä-ˌses , ˈprō- , -səs \
Merriam-Webster shows that too. It doesn't bother me either way.
