Today is going to your first introduction to proper organization on your website. One thing that we always need to remember is that we are building our websites for PEOPLE, and our visitors and how someone would view our content and our navigation is what should dictate how we present our content.

In other words, if your website is difficult to navigate, people simply won't. The may read your content, and then just move onto another website. You can increase your website "page views" and overall website revenue if you understand proper navigiation

Introducing "Custom" Menus in Wordpress.

The default Wordpress menus work in very strange ways and can be quite awkward. Typically when you add a page, it automatically goes to the main menu. A post, will go to the homepage blog roll (not the main menu).

As a website owner, you want FULL control of your navigation as your theme by default won't do a very good job of this. Fortunately, it is quite straightforward to create Custom Menus.

Navigation is going to be a critical element to your user experience moving forward and will impact your rankings (as Google ranks sites with proper navigation better), so this is an important step here.

I have created a"Creating Custom Menus, Navigation, & Widgets" video walking you through the process of creating custom menus. You can check it out below.

Task 1: Create a Menu

There are a few simple steps to creating a custom menu. The first thing you need to understand is where to find the Menu management section within your Wordpress admin area.

Under the Appearance, click the Menus sub heading.

This will take you to the custom menu creator.

Under the left tab, you are going to see a Posts section. Posts are not added to your navigation by default, so you are going to need to click the Posts tab and it will show a list of your Posts.

In this case, we have only create the About Me post. Click the check box associated with that, and then click the Add to Menu.

**Note: Most themes by default will add Pages to the top menu, but if you don't see your Privacy Policy within the Menu Structure section, you will need to add that.

Your About Me page has now been added to your menu structure (as shown below).

Once added to your Menu Structure, you can reorganize your menu in any way you like by dragging and dropping them. In this case, I am going to add my About Kyle post above the Privacy Policy, which is going to put it to the "left" of this within the live menu on my website. So in essence, I am ordering my pages here.

Upon completing my menu order, click the "Create Menu" button and you will establish your new menu.

After you have done this, you are going to want to add your newly created menu to your website, to override the Main Menu on your site. You are going to see a new tab created after you have created your new menu called "Manage Locations".

You will want to click this tab, and then under the "Main Menu" item you are going to choose the menu you just created, in this case it is called "Main Menu". After doing that click Save Changes. You are set!

For example purposes, here is what my live website looks like with my newly updated menu.

You can see the order of the menu items and that my "About Kyle" post comes before the "Privacy Policy" post.

And we are done. It is as simple as that and as we continue to build out our website, we are going to be reorganizing our websites regularly, managing this menu and likely creating "sub menus" which we will be getting into later as we have more content on our websites.

Nice work thus far!

I notice these two features on Site Content "SEO analysis and checks" and "Content structure analysis" I have used Site Content as least half a dozen times and I have never noticed these features in use..

So,are they no longer extant or did I miss them somehow. If they are longer available maybe they should be removed from the list of features that Site Content provides.

Thanks

Hiya..That was such a great response to @LCrombie. I've learnt it's best to have different websites for different niches. Assuming my niche is mobile accessories& I intend to start with marketing security cameras, should my domain be something like "securitycamera" or "mobile accesories", or "esiezafmobileaccessories."? Do I need to have my name in the domain or not necessarily?

Hi Esiezaf - Domain names are important for sure, but the days of having a domain name that exactly matches your niche are long gone. If you can get a domain name with your exact niche it can't hurt, but don't sweat it if you can't find it available. It it more important that you domain name is short if possible - under 15 characters is great. Another thing to think about is could you build a strong brand around the domain name. Unless you are planning to brand yourself, and make yourself the focus in your marketing, I wouldn't use your name in the domain name. I hope this helps. You are off to a great start.

No the original message was in French. And I don't want to get into trouble. So, you might try a translator program to translate the original post. I sort of mentioned that in the post too. I hope I don't get into trouble for mentioning that?

Yea I can't understand a word of any of that. Why would you get in trouble? Is it something that I need to read? I mean like are they talking to me and if so is that something important?? Bc if not then I'm good and not worried about figuring it out. Unless it's something that could really help me. Then I guess I'll take the time out to try to figure out what their all saying. Just Saying Lol

Oh Ok, That's what is was wondering. It said Viola or something like that and that's why I thought they were trying to say something to me. Please just excuse me, I'm kind of ditsy or silly. I Don't really know how to say it.lol Well I'll just say I'll probably end up asking Alot of Dumb or Maybe even Questions with the Answer being Obvious throughout all these lessons. I swear it seems like I'm even getting more ditsy the older I get. Which is unfortunate for me..... But it's Hilarious To My Family. Just Saying. 😂🤷🤣

I am kinda confused about the keywords and writing articles.
when I pick up a phrase.

Does it have to be 100% accurate?
For example. if I fit in my title "Diapers FOR Babies"
it won't show in google if someone type "Diapers Babies"?

both words are inside of "Diapers for Babies".

B. about stuffing:

should I really be careful not to repeat any sentence or words that I write? aren't there some rules or something ? for example, Google will approve stuffing the same keyword up to 5 times?

I'd happy to have more clarification on that.

Thank you, good people

Good question Ido and a common one. When you choose your keywords to search, yes you want them to make sense. You'll get more accurate research results using 'diapers for babies' or best diapers for babies' instead of just diapers babies. For using the keywords in your article, you want to use it in your title, the first paragraph and maybe at the end of your article ie. in the conclusion or summary paragraph. Hope this answers your question and helps you.

Hello,
I'm stuck at Creating my Custom Menu
My page is bit different from Kyle's tutorial where I can only see Menu Name and below that (and add menu from the column on the left). I seem to be missing Home &
Privacy Policy.
When I check on left on Post, I have others and not the ones mentioned above.
For your information and help with thanks.

try click on view all on the pages in the menu - it may show more pages you should be able to find your privacy policy - assuming you have created one....( posts or pages whichever you have created)
for the home - choose a custom menu item and add your url address and description of home.
good luck
phil
