Lesson 1, Getting Rolling!

First off, we would like to personally welcome you to Wealthy Affiliate. I am Kyle, co-founder of Wealthy Affiliate and I am going to be the one walking you through the training and the process of building a successful business online.

Carson, the other co-founder works more with the technical team (close to 30 full-time employees) so you will see a bit less of him, although he is still very much active here within the community every day.

Here is a photo of us and our families below (me and my family on LEFT, Carson and family on RIGHT). :)

Our goal in the early stages here is EARN your trust and help you get moving in the right direction with your business. We realize that the industry is full of companies that are not all that trustworthy and it has been our mission over the past 15 years to do things differently. Wealthy Affiliate has been around since 2005, and during this 15 year period we have helped close to 2.3 MILLION people during this time!

The community here is full of amazing people, with a lot of expertise. I know you are going to quickly realize that. In fact, you are going to be able to tap into this knowledge an expertise at any point as you move forward in the training.

In the coming days and weeks we are going to be showing you how online success works and we will help you realize your own potential within the Internet space to earn revenue and leverage the internet to grow a business.

Before we continue, we want to point out a few important things:

(1) Anyone Can Accomplish Success Online. Members here at WA succeed at the highest rate out of any platform online!

(2) Anything NEW Can "Appear" to be Overwhelming at First. Like riding a bike, it is normal to feel overwhelmed and even "fall" a few times when getting rolling. Don't worry, you will quickly get the hang of things! Stick with Wealthy Affiliate and you will achieve, and far exceed your goals. We teach what works.

(3) No Technical or Prior Online Business Experience Required. If you have experience that is great, but it is definitely not a requirement here at Wealthy Affiliate. Everything related to online business can be learned here within your membership and you definitely do not need to be a "techie".

(4) Success is a Journey. Success is very cumulative by design. This means that everything you do now, and every step you take will contribute towards your personal success in the future. An exciting journey does lie ahead and the effort you put forth now will pay off later and often times forever!

A Quick Look at How YOU Will Be Creating Success.

Success online is very simple at it's core. There is a 4-step business building process that you are going to be learning here at Wealthy Affiliate. Here is a quick diagram breaking down the process.

Broken, down, the process looks like this:

Step 1: Choose an Interest. This can be anything at all, any interest, passion or even something you have no personal experience with.

Step 2: Build a Website. Your website is your foundation and we have the most sophisticated and feature rich website and hosting platform here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Step 3: Attract Visitors. You are going to be learning all about how to get traffic and visitors to your website. The first focus is FREE traffic and there is A LOT of it out there.

Step 4: Earn Revenue. Once you have people on your site and traffic, you can earn revenue. There are over 50 ways you can monetize traffic online, and over 550 MILLION products/services that you can promote as an affiliate.

As you go through the training, this is going to be covered in detail. As mentioned, absolutely EVERYTHING you need is here at WA to facilitate this process! It is a true "earn while you learn" environment.

Before we go any further...

We want to give you two simple pieces of advice within the Wealthy Affiliate community.

Piece of Advice #1: Do not be afraid to ask questions! There are 100,000's of people here within WA at any given moment and many, MANY experts. If you need help, please ask! Go to the dashboard and leave a question, or you can contact me directly here.

PS. Carson and I (Kyle) help people all day, don't be afraid to reach out to me even if it is to say "hi".

Piece of Advice #2: Take action on what you learn! Action leads to success. You could read and watch the training until you are blue in the face, but if you never take action on it you won't achieve any success.

We don’t want to put any pressure on you and definitely do not want to overwhelm you as you get started, so we are going to give you three simple tasks to perform (as noted below). Spend a few minutes today and complete these tasks! :)

You are currently reading lesson 1 of a 10 lesson Getting Started course. This course is going to step you through the process of getting started. It will answer all of the questions that you have about earning money on the Internet, and will reveal exactly how to do it.

If you ever need to get back to your training, simply click the Training tab in the upper menu. This "smart" button will always take you back to your last completed task and you will also see your progress through the training.

Click the "Continue Here" to get back into your training at any time.

Your Current Tasks :)

In this Lesson you will become involved and immersed within the awesome community here at Wealthy Affiliate. We are a community that cares about your success, and one where you will create wonderful relationships within the industry. You will soon learn that you can SUPERCHARGE your learning and ultimately, your success by being active in the community, and immersing yourself.

This starts with uploading a picture, adding a few words about yourself in your profile description, and getting involved in a live chat with others. These tiny steps are referred to as your "Account Setup" tasks which we will discuss below in a little more detail.

Right now, there is no reason to delay your training, let's get started with your Tasks for today.

Task 1: Watch The Walk Through Video Below

Your first task today is to watch the "Wealthy Affiliate Walkthrough - How YOU Can Benefit From WA" video. This video will walk you through Wealthy Affiliate, show you how to find your way around, show you how to get help, and ultimately show you how WA will help you succeed within the online world.

Click the video below to start watching.

At any time if you have questions as you are watching the Wealthy Affiliate Walkthrough video, simply leave them in the comments section below the video and we will be more than happy to help you out. Remember, there is a TON of help available whenever you need it.

Task 2: Complete Your Account Set-up

Your next task is to set-up your Wealthy Affiliate account. Here is video walking you through the process it. It is fairly straightforward and only requires a few steps.

Setting up your Wealthy Affiliate profile only includes three items:

1. Adding a profile image (can be anything you want, including one of the default options)

2. Add a profile description. Again, you are in control. Share something about yourself, your interests, and perhaps why you are here at WA (and your goals online)

3. Set Goals. Set some "money" goals for yourself here at WA. This is going to be great for motivation moving forward, but also will naturally lead to much more achievement.

You can also edit your profile at any time, by going directly to your profile page.

This may seem very simple (and it is), but there are definite reasons that you are going to want to complete the account set-up process. Here are some benefits to setting up your account:

  • Leads to better networking within the community
  • Your “followers” within the community will go up at least 5x (in some cases)
  • People are more willing to help you if you have a profile
  • Adds a level of credibility within the community
  • Shows others that you are serious about SUCCESS

Immerse yourself within Wealthy Affiliate and you are going to experience a lot more success. It is a rare day within WA when you don’t get to brush shoulders with millionaire marketers hanging out within the community, so take this serious and make your profile (people’s first impression of you) a good one.

Goals are important for achievement and success, so we recommend that you set these early on. And don't worry, as time goes on you can and likely will be setting new goals as you make progress!

One More Thing...

We want you to make us a promise today. We want you to give Wealthy Affiliate a chance first and foremost. We know that you may have had bad experiences online in the past and we want you to allow us to prove ourselves to you.

We care about YOU and we care about YOUR personal success more than you think.

Do we have a deal? :)

Again, we want to personally welcome you to the community and we look forward to helping you achieve success online, and far exceeding your expectations :)

Your friends,

Kyle & Carson

PS. When you are done your tasks, simply check them off below and then move onto the next lesson. And if you have any questions at all, please leave them in the comments below.

In the next lesson we are going to be talking all about Making Money! :)

Tasks 0/3 completed
1. Watch the Walk-through Video of Wealthy Affiliate

Hi all, I haven't got a lot confidence in my niche for one reason or another, think it's too broad for starters. I have already set up a website and put on post about it. Done a lot of the training and gone back over most of it! Bit of a slow learner here.... Old age syndrome.

So I've decided to leave it there for now till I can get my head around it and try another niche. Any one got any thoughts on hoovers as a niche? May seem a bit strange, but being a cleaner for 15 years and cleaned hundreds of different houses, I know a lot about them, including repairing and servicing them. I could do reviews, tutorials, product comparisons......

Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi Jenny Hoover’s sound great. Also, some places refer to them as vacuum cleaners, your skills as a cleaner would gives you plenty of posts.

You could add cleaning products your your carpet, how to remove red wine for example. Hope this helps.

Fantastic! Thanks. Think I was over thinking my other niche. Yes I was going to search in keywords about vacuum and hoover, to see which is the best word to use. Already discovered organize is more popularly searched than organise! Learn something everyday....

Great idea about cleaning products too. I have an abundance of knowledge there too.

Thanks.

Hi - one thing to remember, is that Hoover is a brand name, it is not the name of the product. It has become common usage for everyone to call a vacuum cleaner a Hoover, but strictly speaking, that's not correct.

So, you couldn't use the name Hoover, in the domain name of your website.

Yah Jenny, I guess it's one of those habits that we need to work on them. Like calling all toothpaste brands Colgate. Thanx for reminding us.

This is an excellent niche idea. And you have a great asset - your knowledge and experience. You will be able really help people. The websites that do best as those that help people solve problems. The fact that you also fix vacuums is wonderful. We are so excited for you. On top of that it is hard to get along without one. So you have a big market.

Yes, you can do I can do reviews, tutorials, product comparisons. You can also do trouble shooting. WoW what a golden opportunity.

Here are some sites that may help you with your niche.

You may get overwhelmed because your niche is so broad. It would be a good idea to narrow it down by starting with a specific audience with a problem such as vacuum cleaners for pet owners. That's just an idea.

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Hi

Vacuums are the products you would be promoting on your site vs a niche subject however it may need narrowed down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in vacuum cleaning

https://vacuumspecialists.com/blog/

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Possible programs

Or

You can do a google search

Welcome.
Yes, WA teaches you that you must have 15 - 20 content blogs on your website before applying to affiliate programs. Also you will learn how to optimize your site for search engines plus a lot lot more.

Here's some help for choosing a niche.

A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping and what to help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning so the website has a chance to grow, the focus needs to be a smaller scope. For example essential camping equipment for beginners. Once the website is established and has a good volume, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related. This is just an example.

I had the same issue. What I did was finish ALL the training, making notes along the way. Then signing up for random affiliate sites (I mostly concentrated on Amazon and Link Share). After I finished all the training, I started watching some of the random classes. Long story short, I found some products on Amazon that I really liked and realized that nobody else was really focusing on them, even tho they are used every day by many, and BAM!! Made my first site.

One important thing to remember tho, do not just fly thru, post, page, and affiliate links. Even though I knew the whole process, I put about 24 hours between each step, and I went back through some of the lessons to make sure I didn't miss anything. It was about 2 days before my site was indexed, and then I threw in a couple links and a banner ad at the top. Now I will concentrate on traffic and my 2nd site.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below You can do a google search
Your niche + affiliate programs
Your niche + affiliate programs + location
and see what results you get

Onward next step in the process.

You site need be ready before you apply for affiliate programs

You would have written 20 - 30 posts and have some traffic to be able apply for affiliate programs as typically they will check your site for relevance and traffic prior approval.

For Amazon it is 10 - 15 posts. You also would have to make 3 sales in your first 180 days.

Lucrative programs - 40 posts +

Once accepted, they've given you material and special tracking code links you can share on your site.

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Once they do, and in accordance with your affiliation terms and conditions, how commission payouts are tracked and paid. You need to read up how payments are made because different programs follow different rules; some pay by check others via PayPal or straight to your check account.

In the first instance, Please follow the training and apply what is taught all is explained within the lessons. How to make money by Kyle I would always adhere to your affiliate program terms and conditions.

Meanwhile I'd ask as many questions as I want to get clarifications,

Welcome to WA and our community.

My problem is that I don't know if I am to choose a niche to make it a business in a place where I currently reside or if I can choose a niche and sell it to any market in the world. A niche is something you choose to be the subject of your website. All of your website content blogs will be about your niche.

We see that you have listed some niche ideas. Each niche should have its own website And it is important to choose only one niche at a time.

Each of your niche ideas is too broad. To start you need to marrow the one for your first website down.

How to narrow a niche down How To Expand Your niche later Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

A niche needs a target audience. Let's say you choose fitness. So your audience and starting niche idea could be loosing belly fat men over 50. Strength training for women over 40. I help women over 50 lose weight with yoga, help new Moms find the most important baby gear to cope with their first year as a parent. or something like that.

Who do you want to help. When you write your content blogs you will keep this group of people in mind.

Kyle always asks us to complete the following statement.

For and foremost, your niche need be focused to ONE niche subject. Otherwise it would confuse Google and your visitors.

Personally the concept of building a niche website is that you must have a passion for your niche and its best to know something about it. WA members have their own specific interests so it is highly unlikely someone would do what you have in mind much less even want to.

Sure, there are millions upon millions of similar niches on the web But first and foremost what differentiates you from the rest, is your own spin on your blog.

Your own original written content, your vibe how you research and convey the message to your visitors, understanding your audience really well and acknowledging their issues in your own posts. Each of us unique and do things differently.

So there you have it. Pure and simple.

Thanks again. Yes I do realise it will not look the same, it was a bit of an impulse based on the background colour more so than content, it was like looking at a postage stamp, but good to know I can enlarge for a better view

Hi Cwizden
Thanks for the info, at least I now have another option to change the theme. Hope you finally settle your choice

Yes, you can find some themes and do a browser search. Find the names first in WordPress back Office -> appearance -> themes.

Example Astra Wordpress theme demo
Most themes allow you to see a demo online so you have some idea what it looks like in detail.

Also if your free siterubix.com website available you can try different themes.

Hi

Absolutely.

You may do in Appearance > Themes and add new. Input keywords find what you are looking for. Install and activate.

You may loose out on some CSS styles however content will be left intact, a bit of tweaking and you are done.

We also recommend that you keep a back up theme, you can do with the TwentyTwentyOne.
