Lesson 1, Getting Rolling!

First off, we would like to personally welcome you to Wealthy Affiliate. I am Kyle, co-founder of Wealthy Affiliate and I am going to be the one walking you through the training and the process of building a successful business online.

Carson, the other co-founder works more with the technical team (close to 30 full-time employees) so you will see a bit less of him, although he is still very much active here within the community every day.

Here is a photo of us and our families below (me and my family on LEFT, Carson and family on RIGHT). :)

Our goal in the early stages here is EARN your trust and help you get moving in the right direction with your business. We realize that the industry is full of companies that are not all that trustworthy and it has been our mission over the past 16 years to do things differently. Wealthy Affiliate has been around since 2005, and during this 16 year period we have helped close to 2.3 MILLION people during this time!

The community here is full of amazing people, with a lot of expertise. I know you are going to quickly realize that. In fact, you are going to be able to tap into this knowledge an expertise at any point as you move forward in the training.

I assure you that you have definitely made the right choice in joining the community here at Wealthy Affiliate, you are going to love it here and you are going to quickly realize we care about YOU and your success online!

In the coming days and weeks we are going to be showing you how online success works and we will help you realize your own potential within the Internet space to earn revenue and leverage the internet to grow a business.

Before we continue, we want to point out a few important things:

(1) Anyone Can Accomplish Success Online. There are now over 4.75 BILLION people using the Internet, regardless of the direction you head online there is a very large number of people there that you can connect with and leverage to create a business online. Members here at WA succeed at the highest rate out of any platform online!

(2) Anything NEW Can "Appear" to be Overwhelming at First. Like riding a bike, it is normal to feel overwhelmed and even "fall" a few times when getting rolling. Don't worry, you will quickly get the hang of things! Stick with Wealthy Affiliate and you will achieve, and far exceed your goals. We teach what works.

(3) No Technical or Prior Online Business Experience Required. If you have experience that is great, but it is definitely not a requirement here at Wealthy Affiliate. Everything related to online business can be learned here within your membership and you definitely do not need to be a "techie".

(4) Success is a Journey. Success is very cumulative by design. This means that everything you do now, and every step you take will contribute towards your personal success in the future. An exciting journey does lie ahead and the effort you put forth now will pay off later and often times forever!

A Quick Look at How YOU Will Be Creating Success.

Success online is very simple at it's core. There is a 4-step business building process that you are going to be learning here at Wealthy Affiliate. Here is a quick diagram breaking down the process.

Broken, down, the process looks like this:

Step 1: Choose an Interest. This can be anything at all, any interest, passion or even something you have no personal experience with.

Step 2: Build a Website. Your website is your foundation and we have the most sophisticated and feature rich website and hosting platform here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Step 3: Attract Visitors. You are going to be learning all about how to get traffic and visitors to your website. The first focus is FREE traffic and there is A LOT of it out there.

Step 4: Earn Revenue. Once you have people on your site and traffic, you can earn revenue. There are over 50 ways you can monetize traffic online, and over 550 MILLION products/services that you can promote as an affiliate.

As you go through the training, this is going to be covered in detail. As mentioned, absolutely EVERYTHING you need is here at WA to facilitate this process! It is a true "earn while you learn" environment.

Before we go any further...

We want to give you two simple pieces of advice within the Wealthy Affiliate community.

Piece of Advice #1: Do not be afraid to ask questions! There are 100,000's of people here within WA at any given moment and many, MANY experts. If you need help, please ask! Go to the dashboard and leave a question, or you can contact me directly here.

PS. Carson and I (Kyle) help people all day, so don't be afraid to reach out to me even if it is to say "hi".

Piece of Advice #2: Take action on what you learn! Action leads to success. You could read and watch the training until you are blue in the face, but if you never take action on it you won't achieve any success.

We don’t want to put any pressure on you and definitely do not want to overwhelm you as you get started, so we are going to give you three simple tasks to perform (as noted below). Spend a few minutes today and complete these tasks! :)

You are currently reading lesson 1 of a 10 lesson Getting Started course. This course is going to step you through the process of getting started. It will answer all of the questions that you have about earning money on the Internet, and will reveal exactly how to do it.

If you ever need to get back to your training, simply click the Training tab in the upper menu. This "smart" button will always take you back to your last completed task and you will also see your progress through the training.

Click the "Continue Here" to get back into your training at any time.

Your Current Tasks :)

In this Lesson you will become involved and immersed within the awesome community here at Wealthy Affiliate. We are a community that cares about your success, and one where you will create wonderful relationships within the industry. You will soon learn that you can SUPERCHARGE your learning and ultimately, your success by being active in the community, and immersing yourself.

This starts with uploading a picture, adding a few words about yourself in your profile description, and getting involved in a live chat with others. These tiny steps are referred to as your "Account Setup" tasks which we will discuss below in a little more detail.

Right now, there is no reason to delay your training, let's get started with your Tasks for today.

Task 1: Watch The Walk Through Video Below

Your first task today is to watch the "Wealthy Affiliate Walkthrough - How YOU Can Benefit From WA" video. This video will walk you through Wealthy Affiliate, show you how to find your way around, show you how to get help, and ultimately show you how WA will help you succeed within the online world.

Click the video below to start watching.

At any time if you have questions as you are watching the Wealthy Affiliate Walkthrough video, simply leave them in the comments section below the video and we will be more than happy to help you out. Remember, there is a TON of help available whenever you need it.

Task 2: Complete Your Account Set-up

Your next task is to set-up your Wealthy Affiliate account. Here is video walking you through the process it. It is fairly straightforward and only requires a few steps.

Setting up your Wealthy Affiliate profile only includes three items:

1. Adding a profile image (can be anything you want, including one of the default options)

2. Add a profile description. Again, you are in control. Share something about yourself, your interests, and perhaps why you are here at WA (and your goals online)

3. Set Goals. Set some "money" goals for yourself here at WA. This is going to be great for motivation moving forward, but also will naturally lead to much more achievement.

You can also edit your profile at any time, by going directly to your profile page.

This may seem very simple (and it is), but there are definite reasons that you are going to want to complete the account set-up process. Here are some benefits to setting up your account:

  • Leads to better networking within the community
  • Your “followers” within the community will go up at least 5x (in some cases)
  • People are more willing to help you if you have a profile
  • Adds a level of credibility within the community
  • Shows others that you are serious about SUCCESS

Immerse yourself within Wealthy Affiliate and you are going to experience a lot more success. It is a rare day within WA when you don’t get to brush shoulders with millionaire marketers hanging out within the community, so take this serious and make your profile (people’s first impression of you) a good one.

Goals are important for achievement and success, so we recommend that you set these early on. And don't worry, as time goes on you can and likely will be setting new goals as you make progress!

One More Thing...

We want you to make us a promise today. We want you to give Wealthy Affiliate a chance first and foremost. We know that you may have had bad experiences online in the past and we want you to allow us to prove ourselves to you.

We care about YOU and we care about YOUR personal success more than you think.

Do we have a deal? :)

Again, we want to personally welcome you to the community and we look forward to helping you achieve success online, and far exceeding your expectations :)

Your friends,

Kyle & Carson

PS. When you are done your tasks, simply check them off below and then move onto the next lesson. And if you have any questions at all, please leave them in the comments below.

In the next lesson we are going to be talking all about Making Money! :)

Tasks 0/3 completed
1. Watch the Walk-through Video of Wealthy Affiliate
2. Complete the Account Set-up Process on your profile (image, description, goals)

Hi everyone. I've been in the pest control industry for many years and was thinking of pet friendly pest solutions. Bedbugs would be my area of interest with room for expanding into other pests as well.Made some keyword searches and found some combinations ranked under 100. Seems like a feasible area to delve in. Thinking in just buying domain right away or should I finish all premium training before going live? Hmmmmm......

Hi

Awesome niche, however needing be refined a bit. I am sure you'd be able devise a plan moving forward. When needing a hand, or have further questions. kindly let us know.

You may start with a siterubix subdomain around a focused niche and build up content and until you are satisfied with your niche and name, down the line have your own dot com, as some affiliate programs do not work with a subdomain. Cost of which is $15 yearly each privacy included. You can then move your siterubix to your dot com applying the move feature found within the site manager which is an easy process.

Another reason is that if you made a mistake on a dot com domain, you won't be able to edit the URL, you'd have to purchase a new one.

I would use the free domain name first and do the first 10 lessons, because many times what happens is that people change their mind on the domain name they want and cannot change it but have to buy another domain name.. When you use the free siterugbix.com you can MOVE it to a purchased domain name - everything moves. As for your niche idea great opportunity. and its good to see you have the background knowledge of it. Terrific.

Just in case you would find some general niche tips helpful, here they are.
A niche is something you feel super excited to write about, a skill you have attained, something that resonates with you. You will want to be focused on one niche. What is it that you want to help a group of people with or what problem do you want to help them solve (group could be age, gender, location, experience level, degree or type of need, etc.)

A niche is not a product, it's a subject that you can help a target audience with. Remember, you are not setting up a shop (store), you will be writing lots of articles about your niche to help your targeted audience.

The importance of a targeted audience is that It's always better to target a specific niche with a specific solution to problems.

Kyles asks us to complete this statement.
'i want to help ____(group) with ______(problem)'

For example. I like camping.
Camping is a very broad topic with a lot of competition so to eliminate some competition in the beginning and to give my website has a chance to rank and grow in traffic, the focus needs to be a smaller scope.

For example my initial narrow scope could be: essential camping equipment for beginners. I can talk about camping, my experiences, what I have learned about camping, and how I have discovered what is really needed. Since I am quality focused, I have found good equipment which I believe is the very best. I will share my review of the equipment I use and why it is the best. Once the website is established and has a good volume of traffic, its scope can be expanded to include other things camping related.

So with my initial narrow scope, after visiting my website, a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping is all about for a beginner and the equipment needed and the best brand products to buy. I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping.

I am passionate about camping and want my readers to get excited about it too and feel comfortable when going for the first time that they have the necessary equipment..

So my niche is camping with an initial narrow scope. My targeted group is beginning campers wondering what equipment is needed and what the best is.

I have had some disappointing experiences so I want to help them avoid the same mistakes I have made. I will help campers buy the right equipment to make their camping experience more pleasant and safe.

I will write many content posts about camping (the how to’s, what is, etc.). A beginner camper has no idea what kind of equipment is necessary. So I will write posts about the necessary equipment. I will choose products I can recommend. I will compare products and identify the best. So after visiting my website a beginning camper will have a good idea of what camping equipment is needed and the best brand products to buy. So I will have many products on my niche website, but they will all relate to camping equipment necessary for a pleasant and safe camping experience.

Why should you narrow your niche when first starting?
The key to getting started fast is to narrow your niche down to a specific topic. This way, you will eliminate a lot of competition and get results much faster. Once your site is established and you are getting traffic you can expand your niche scope.

Keep in mind it's important to choose a niche specific enough that way the target audience arrives at the website and finds exactly what they're looking for. When you go to broad, you lose that.

Health and Wellness would be a very, very broad niche, a little too broad.

If you choose a niche specific enough with plenty of room for scaling out later you are in good shape.

Here are a couple of blogs on narrowing and expanding a niche.

Hey people! I can’t decide which niche to start with. RV ideas and camping. They are similar in some ways, yet very different. But I think I can make it in one bundle? That way I can talk about things needed for both. Plus people are always wanting easy tips and tricks for cooking. Decorating, packing, organizing. Give me your input please!

Hi

I'd pick the one that's best resonates with me.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

In the first instance, I'd ask myself

Am I passionate and genuinely interested in my chosen niche, as I I'd be expected to write lots of content, it would motivate me to update blog with succinct original content worthy my visitors week in week out.

Would I be writing about it in a years time or two or more

Who would be my target audience, who would benefit most from what I have to offer.

The question is WHO would be your target audience vs Not what you are selling to an audience.

You need aim for ONE focused niche with a specific group of people, I'd go with what's best resonates with me.

The recommendation is to focus on ONE site starting out as it takes lots of effort and work get it going, however once you know what you are doing, then the learning curve would be less steeper to scale up.

That's a great niche to be in however broad you may want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites. Target audience is important too, who would you be writing to, once you are able to identify them, you are closer to finding a focused niche.

Once a site starts gaining traction, traffic and authority you can then scale to cover another subcategory.

See example blog post below A niche subject is something you are passionate and genuinely interested in could be a hobby or an interest, and know so well you can write plenty original content about.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in camping

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research which you'd fine in site content > templates:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Okay here's our thoughts.
You have some board ideas here and they are good and popular with an audience needing help. So it is important to define the audience you want to help and how you wish to help them. Even though RV and Camping as somewhat the same, the group of people will most likely be different. So it is important to decide which audience you wish to focus on.

Which one of your ideas are you most passionate about, have the most experience with, know the problems and ways you can help people. That is how you will grow traffic to your website.

Here's an example and some general tips to help you refine one of your ideas. (Just one idea to start with on a website.)

Hi, Joy! What I'm seeing people say, with utter consistency, is that you should cover whatever you enjoy the most and that you're certain you can continue to write about without getting bored. So in other words, whatever you really love and are excited about is probably the best choice. If you love both RV ideas and camping equally, then toss a coin! The advice about a site is that you should continue to post on it for about six months and consider at least 20 posts to be your *minimum*, so keep that in mind, too.

Best of luck to you :-)

You could go for Camping in General; and then throw in RV's later. RV's to me are sort of included in Camping. So, you might just do Camping and throw in RV's later.

Hope this helps and encourages?

Depends on if you have a bigger interest and passion for the mechanical side of RVing or the nature side of camping.
Both would be good niches. They are very different.
I do both, I own a 29 foot RV and backpack tent camp. Not much is used from one to the other.

Well my friend, I have done what I call tent camping. My boys disagree. lol! They say I glamp. I bought a gutted 5th wheel. I now have the task of rebuilding it. I like projects. I will be hiring someone to do my wiring though. I love watching families living full time in an RV. Camping is so peaceful for me. Every time I go, I don’t want to come back. This is my dream life. I can pull it just fine. Backing, I need a lot of practice. My dogs love it too.

So, help me think if you don’t mind. I am rebuilding the camper. But I also enjoy simply tent camping. Just hanging out at the campsite playing games, cooking and meeting other campers. I love to kayak. I excited just talking about it.

Rebuilding the RV would give you a lots of content. Videos of each step with helpful hints, the things that went wrong for you, this would drive more traffic to your blog.
My RV sits on a pad at a lake, don't move it anymore. Backing is no problem for me, I drove big trucks for years.
You need to choose one or the other, after you have a lot of traffic, over 100 per day, you could add a tent camping sideline.
When starting a website, you need to have a narrow direction or traffic will be harder to get and keep.
Glamping is not bad, in the 70's I purchased a small refrigerator for my tent to keep food and milk. I still have it for drinks in my game room.
Pm me here at WA if you would like more detailed help with your content in either one of these niches.
I have been camping and tenting since the 60's. I am going on a 2 week backpack camping trip next summer.

Hello, for the past day or so I've been wracking my brain for a way to narrow down my niche (Nature), into something a little more specific and after browsing through Amazon for a while I came across the idea of Indoor Gardening.

I honestly know close to nothing on the subject, but I'm more than willing to put in the work and research to become good at it.

I would really appreciate any tips or ideas on this potential niche.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Simon
You've chosen quite a large subject matter there and you have quite a few more depths to plunge to find a niche such as:
> Vertical gardening
> Indoor herb gardening
> Balcony gardening
> Windowsill plants
> Plants that need no watering
> Container gardening
> Fruit and/or veg gardening
> You might have to get down to specific plant types/species to find a decent niche.

One starting point is to use Amazon's 'Look Inside' option on some of its books and take a look at a few table of contents to get an idea of either topics for content or for niche ideas.

I had an indoor herb garden. It was a DIY project and worked great. A 4 inch pvc cut to length of window. Cap the ends. Drill large holes a few inches apart in a row. About the size of a solo cup. Hang with a chain in the window and put plants in the holes.

Here are some niche tips you can apply to your niche idea.

You know what; it is okay to go for Nature in General. Then later; if you want to make specific posts; you can. So, I would highly suggest going for Nature. If you want?

I'm definitely going for that, thank you. Like you've mentioned, I can always make specific posts later on because right now I really want to make progress and get a feel for the whole experience first.

Hi everyone. So I have an idea on a Niche I want to focus on. I'm passionate about Hair, Beauty and Makeup. I'm a Graphic designer, and I have designed beauty pages for a magazine. Am I headed in the right direction? Another question i have is, Beauty is pretty much a broad spectrum, and includes makeup, hair, personal care products. So, yeah that's a bit tricky as I'm passionate about all of that.

If anyone has an idea of what i should do, I would so grateful.

Thank you :-)

Hi

I'd pick the one that's best resonates with me.

I'd want to narrow it down to a subcategory starting out, otherwise you will find it very hard to get noticed by the search engines and to compete with big authority sites.

ONE niche, a website. Products and programs can be varied however all must be relevant to the niche.

You may consult with https://answersocrates.com/ for further research into finding a subcategory starting out. You can search what real people are asking as in Questions, Prepositions, Comparisons, in the past, letters and query. It is also great if someone wants to write a thorough research based article.

For example if you are in makeup

You may like review below resource for more ideas

https://blog.feedspot.com/makeup_blogs/
https://blog.feedspot.com/beauty_blogs/

When deciding on a niche try narrow it down to a more specific niche, you can ask yourself the following question:

So I want to help people with ____________________ ?

Fill in the blank and you are going to get closer to a specific audience. Your niche research which you'd fine in site content > templates:-

Questions People are Asking
How to Solutions
Resources Within the Niche
Products You Can Promote/Review
Affiliate Programs
Products
Top Authority Sites/Competitors
Low Competition Keywords
Popular Magazines / Papers / Periodicals
Advertisement Ideas / Headline Ideas

Essentially you are writing more informational posts so that you do not sound so salesy to Google and if there’s a solution, a detailed analysis review post for your visitors to let them make an informed decision whether to go click your links and go purchase the focused item you proposed to solve their issue.

Great general area to focus on...Billions of dollars are being spent by everyone from a teeny all the way to Grandma (and Grandpa?). That brings me to my thoughts...

I would narrow the niche somewhat as it is such a broad sector...So many potential niches to pursue, and a lot of them have multi- multi-millions of dollars trading hands...

Maybe pick the favorite of the possible sub-niches, and start there to see if still too broad, and again niche down if needed...Keep in mind what your passion is and what would keep you excited 2 years from now...

Cheers and best of luck!

You would receive email notifications of payment and access.

Your profile would also change, purple diamond if premium or yellow crowned if premium plus.

As and when you decide to become a Wealthy Affiliate Premium, your first month would be $19 then $49 monthly afterwards until you cancel. Premiums can host up to 10 sites (mix of siterubix subdomains and premiums however 9totalling 10)

Or $49 first month then $99 monthly afterwards for premium plus + tier subscribers. Premium plus can also host up to 50 premium sites.

However hosting is included in a premium subscription to the Wealthy Affiliate platform.

Another reason is that if you made a mistake on a dot com domain, you won't be able to edit the URL, you'd have to purchase a new one.

You will be writing to an audience. Who do you envision that to be? What specific group of people who need help and who you can help solve problems for. You will want a targeted topic and targeted audience so you build a following. Establish your purpose of existing.. Once you have traffic, you can expand your scope.

It can be easy to take on too broad a niche and wonder why getting any traction is difficult...

Do you think its better for me to continue with the training after I have paid for my Premium membership, because I can only do so on the 26th, this coming Monday. The reason for this is, I don't want to start my website on a free domain so to speak.

I noticed you had a thought on starting your website with a purchased dot com.

Just a thought, you may want to start it with the free domain because too often we see people thinking of a better domain name after they start doing dome content. Here's the thing. You can use your free domain site and MOVE it all to a domain you buy later. Everything you do on the free domain (pages, posts, theme, .settings, plugins ) they all move with the click the Move button and your website is on your domain name and you proceed from there. Just a thought.

Hey there Lebo
When you were at Caxton's and you were creating your design - which part of the model's photo did you find yourself looking at the most - was it the hair, the make-up, the clothes, the way she/he carried/posed themselves.
I appreciate that the emphasis probably changed with every design you did but from a personal view, where was your attention grabbed? That focus could be your 'niche' within the whole H,B+M arena.

Hello there.

Wow, just read this twice. this just gave me more perspective. I couldn't have thought about it that way.

So whenever I did Layout Designs for Beauty, the first thing that captured me was whether or not the makeup matched the models natural skin tone, so I could properly color correct for a specific tone, so definitely the face of the model, cheekbones, eyes and lips and how light fell on faces.

But now that I think more about this, what naturally captures me to the image, are definitely the eyes of the models, IF I had to really break it down.

This is insane, you have actually helped me narrow my Niche down to the T!! I look forward to chatting to you soon.

Thank you so much,. I really appreciate your help. Happy holidays to you sir. Be safe and God Bless! :-)
