You have likely heard the term "keyword research". This is the act of finding keyword phrases that are relevant to your niche and deciding whether or not it is appropriate to build content around that particular keyword. This is going to be the “root” of all your search engine optimization success, so we are going to be tackling keywords here before we get into creating content.

First, WHAT is a KEYWORD?

A keyword is simply a word or phrase that people search for in the search engines. Every time you do a google search you are entering a "keyword" into the search box.

Ultimately, the goal of your keyword research is to find keywords that you can get rankings in Google, Yahoo, and Bing with, all while attracting a relevant audience. You will be using the keywords that you find in this lesson to build content around. This will lead you to search engine rankings and traffic to your website!

In this lesson you are going to be tasked to come up with a few "keywords" relevant to your website and your niche.

Each page you create will be targeting a keyword...

That is correct. Moving forward, you are going to be building content on your website. Each page/post that you create will target a brand new keyword (and we will be showing you how). This means that every page or post will have the opportunity to rank under that given keyword in Google and lead to you getting traffic.

100 pages targeted 100 keywords = 100 potential Google rankings.

This can and will lead to mass amounts of traffic and those that follow along with this training are going to see their traffic continue to go up with every "keyword targeted" page or post that they create on their website.

Remember, Google and other search engines are around because of CONTENT and if you can deliver quality content (that targets low competition keywords), you will be able to get great rankings!

I have created a video walk-through of this lesson and I suggest you watch this if you want to get a wonderful overview of what keywords are and how to apply them to your business.

DISCUSS THIS VIDEO HERE: Keyword Mastery - Keywords are the Foundation of Your Success

Task 1: Create a FREE Jaaxy Account (gives you 30 awesome searches)

To complete this lesson you must Register for a FREE Jaaxy Account!

Jaaxy.com is the most powerful keyword tool on the market and delivers accurate, real time data that is going to help you come up with SEO ready keywords. Jaaxy is a company that Carson and I own and founded and was built to fill the many gaps of every other keyword tool out there.

Going forward, Jaaxy is going to provide you with sophisticated keyword and research data (and will save you a TON of time). We offer 30 searches for free when you register which will get you up and running with your Niche & Keyword research.

Register for your free Jaaxy.com account here:

http://www.jaaxy.com/createaccount/

Again, this gives you access the trial plan, no credit cards required. I know you will love Jaaxy!

Task 2: Perform 10 different searches using Jaaxy.com

Your next task is going to be performing 10 full searches relevant to your niche using the Jaaxy.com Keyword tool. Jaaxy is the worlds BEST keyword research platform and there is a Free Trial account available that you need to sign-up for to complete this task.

My suggestion is to start broad with a few of your searches (ie. two or three word searches). For example if your niche was "how to lose belly fat", you might want to start with the search terms:

  • belly fat
  • how to lose belly fat
  • belly fat weight loss
  • stomach fat
  • remove belly fat
  • etc

Then refine your searches. As you see keywords, check the QSR (Quoted Search Result). If it is under 300 results (the lower the better), add to your "good" keyword list (which will be used towards your next task). Ideally you want to aim for keywords with at least 50 monthly searches.

Task 3: : Research and find at least 5 keywords related to your niche

Your final task today is to find 5 keywords that meet the following criteria.

(1) More than 50 monthly searches (sometimes ANY traffic is OK)
(2) Less than 200 QSR. (the lower the less competition).
(3) Keyword must make sense.

Here is an example search using Jaaxy:

As you can see, most of these keywords meet the traffic test (over 50 monthly searches). The last check is to click the "Get QSR" to see what the competition is. If you are on the Jaaxy trial, you will simply click "Get QSR" until I find a keyword with under 200 competition.

The keyword must make grammatical sense. If it doesn't and you want to use that keyword, do another search on the keyword that makes sense as the data will differ slightly. An example of this is "best tips lose belly fat" which doesn't make grammatical sense (it is missing the "to"). I would do another search on this but this time "best tips to lose belly fat".

Do this exact process within your niche to come up with 5 Keywords.

WA PREMIUM INCLUDES: 1,000 Hand Picked Keywords and Unlimited Searches Using the WA Keyword Tool!

We have a Keyword Tool that you get unlimited access to as a Premium member here at Wealthy Affiliate. This is a different tool than Jaaxy but it will give you UNLIMITED keyword searches to reveal keywords for your niche! Included when you upgrade to Premium.

Tasks 0/4 completed
2. Sign-up to Jaaxy.com for Free
3. Perform 10 searches using Jaaxy
4. Find 3 Keywords that meet the keyword criteria (related to niche, 50 monthly, less than 300 competition)

Ok, so I'm a bit confused. I understood we were supposed to run 10 searches to come up with a list of viable keywords that meet the parameters indicated. Upon, rereading the instructions, it seems that we only need to come up with three total keywords? I come up with a total of 64 viable keywords. Do I need to narrow these down to three. If so, what criteria should I use?
Reply
BassetHub Premium
I think you need to pick the most 3 to 10 keywords that have the most important values :

Competition : { QSR } {better to be under 50 }

Traffic : { SEO } which will be better if it is higher and reach 100

64 Keywords are great as that is potentially 64 post you can write.

Just make sure the keywords are related to your niche

Ok, makes sense. Many of the keywords I came up with seem a little redundant anyway. A lot of them just have different modifiers.

What do you guys think about hyphenated domain names? My niche is in teaching people how to build and fix their own computers, and I've tried things like "buildapc . com" and most of these are all taken, but I can get something similar to "build-a-pc .com." Would this be detrimental to trying to market this website?

Good question, I'm interested too as I have had that happen with several domain names
Reply
cramervod Premium
they are hard to catch on. with word of mouth - is the problem.
Really hard for people to call it something and to remember it.
Reply

I own a site with a hyphenated domain name. Personally, I don't think it causes much of a problem. All that really matters is to choose a good and relevant domain name that can help with your branding. In your case, I actually think that build-a-pc is better than buildapc.
Reply
sofieanderin Premium
I agree with you @birdjack95...I have purchased a hyphenated domain name and I went back and forth about the hyphenated part. Actually, for my domain, I think it makes the name easier to read.
Reply
One of the things I have learned is to localize your .com
For example, I live in San Francisco. Buildapc. com might be taken but buildapcsf or buildapc-sf might not be taken. It ranks well in my local area and ranks well in general. So maybe you can consider localizing your .com and you will find it to be successful.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

So my niche is developing mental toughness. When I do the google search on the topic, there isn't seem to be any affiliate site around this. It's also not easy to find a product around this niche. What does this means? I start to feel like this is not a niche. Any idea?
Reply

Thanks :) that clarifies it.
Reply

You may need to break it down to find appropriate products.

So if your niche is "mental toughness", what does that mean? Holding your breath under water longer? Working longer hours? Stopping being suicidal?

It's easier to find a product for "how to sleep less and get more done" than "how to be mentally tough.

You can also use this idea to get a narrower audience. Someone looking to hold their breath long or hike in the mountains in winter is a different type of person than someone looking to overcome life hardship from family problems.

ok...hi everyone! I looked at all the pics (well, most of them) and all I see are for bloggers. I just wanted to be an affiliate for my product. So what kind of website do I choose? Do I still blog pages and pages of content? I don't know what ALL the cat toys do or don't do yet. Do you have to be a blogger to have a website? You don't have to blog hundreds of posts, but it is better to post articles on a regular basis so that you can rank your webpage higher in the search engines, like Google. If they see that your page isn't active, then they won't rank you as high in the search engine results pages.

To delete the home page you will need to:
1. go back to site manager.
2. log in
3. Go to pages section
4. Click on the page you no longer want
5. Delete or add to tash.

Hope that helped!

Trying to find my niche... I am currently in charge of promoting our school district through social media, website, etc. I am not a marketing person, so I have had to do a lot of research to help me out. I'm not an expert, but could I take all of that research and use that as my niche? Basically, it would be using social media to promote your school district. If I am taking other people's research to create this website, wouldn't that be plagiarism? Just want to make sure I am thinking along the right lines.
Reply
AnthonyMLM Premium
Plagiarism, only happens when you copy the exact content of somebody work. Nothing wrong with providing a better solution to the school district. As long as it's your own methods and work.
Reply
Good point. There are several websites which contain the same basic information but aren't exactly the same. So, in your opinion, would a niche like this be worth pursuing?
Reply
AnthonyMLM Premium
If you have something you like to offer, and you can continue to provide valuable information to your readers, Why not? If you can't continue to write long term information for your readers then I wouldn't pursue it. Think about affiliate program links that are related to your niche. So you can earn income from your work your providing for business.

How important is it to come within/under the maximum recommended number of characters when writing your home title and home description.

I copied and pasted below what it said for the home description.
does it really matter if you go few characters over?

''Most search engines use a maximum of 160 chars for the home description''
Reply
cramervod Premium
anything over the 160 will not show up in the description so it's pointless to go over that number.
Reply
Pmcelroy Premium
Thanks for the info. I had no idea.
Reply
llj-tucson Premium
The 160 characters refer to the page description or snippet of information that Google displays on search results pages. If you perform a quick search in Google on any topic you choose and look at the results returned it will help. You'll see a list of relevant page titles and a brief description of the page underneath. Writing more doesn't hurt anything. It just gets chopped off due to space constraints.

Yes! I just created my first three pages! Gonna make this rock! Hope you guys are following along too and having success! Thanks for explaining everything clearly Kyle!

If I could just add one thing:
To organize the pages, you must go to: Appearance> Menus> Menu Structure. From there, you can adjust the pages you want on top or like 1,2,3. Just wanted to point that out if anyone else had that question because I didn't see it covered here but maybe I'm jumping-the-gun here! Hope that helps! :-)

You probably want to use custom menus, they are much easier to manage.

You can add these custom menus to organize your top menu in any way in which you like, as well as create sub-menus (for themes that will support this). You can also use these custom menus to add within your side widgets on your website (within your sidebar).

Here is a tutorial on how to create custom menus: I use custom menus on all of my websites (over-ride that default menu). It allows much more control and organization....both good things!

I would be happy earning 1k per week on a continous bases, from there I would be so excited earning 10k per month, this is about 2250 per week, now I understand that Inorder to move forward at least 60% of what I make will go back to the business. Having the proper equipment is a must inorder to move forward, now for the first year I will set my goal on a three month quarter, now once I can continue to earn 1k per week my wife is going to leave her job and will help to accomplish our goals, this will be done for several reasons, Money is at the top of the list but it is not the most important part of our plan, first we will make a continous steady income and both of us means two incomes, and it also means same agenda, same time frame, and we can work from anywhere, this means that our goal to bring our family together is at our reach, if Father deems it so. Now by both of us doing the same thing we can travel and never miss a beat. We also plan to increase the dollar amount by 2k per month everytime we hit our current goal. This will be done until we feel that the amount we are bring in is the amount that gives us the ability to do what we want when we want, and that will be the summit. However, I will always challenge myself or we tend to get confortable and that when we loose our way. I would also like to start something that will help those out there in need, One thing I have found out while I have been on this quest is that there are times I want to invest in higher membership, or I have been apporached several times and asked if I wanted to be a testominal type, nowthen, at first I would say yes, and then I learned that it would only happen if I would invest 1 or 2k or something like that, and I would set at the end of my chair and say hey I would love to do that, that means that your going to make sure I succeed and start making money right away, but the ugly truth is that if I had the 2k to invest that would be a no brainer. I have been on this quest for 10 months living off the money I had put away, been hit by several scam artist, and bought so many thing that were in no way needed for this endevor. So Here I am getting up at 3:00 in the morning inorder to try to beat the 7 day race and maybe be able to start gernerating some income inorder to move up my membership, and also be able to make the eary doctors app in Albuquerque, due to an accident my wife and I were Involved in on I-40 about 2 months ago. This was not said for any reason but to show that I am here for One reason and in my life I have always completed what I started, and I dont like to finish 2nd.

There are several ways you can make money online. What you will primarily learn here at WA is how to make money through affiliate marketing; which is the selling of other people's products in exchange for a commission.

It's kind of like when you join the gym and invite your friend. If they sign up, they'll give you a month off or something; but instead you make money.

So the websites we create here are used to sell other peoples products? Or do we learn how to create adds for social media like fb etc?

How do I link a product im promoting on my website to my audience if they come from different countries. For example I want to promote a specific product such as a helmet, but I have audience from the USA, Italy and India - how will they be directed to the product in their country when they want to make a purchase?
Reply
Stormshadow Premium
Hello Michalsbe, it is true that you will have people from other countries visiting your site but one thing you should understand is that you can't reach out to everyone. The fact that you are promoting a product that can only be gotten in the USA tells you that your target audience are those based in the USA. Visitors from other country will just have to miss the opportunity and so will you. But you can't change your promotional tactic because your target audience are not those of other countries. If they want your product really bad, they will still get it irrespective of where they are found.you need not worry yourself about it.
have in mind that you can't meet the needs of everyone and so you should focus on those whose needs you can meet.
Hope I have given you some insight and answered your question.

I would like to offer a suggestion to the people learning this new affiliate information.
We all learn by REPETITION. So it's not just enough to read through this info once. It would be wise to do it over and over a few times until you "GET IT". And then go on to the next section and having the previous section LEARNED in your mind, you will have a better base for the next item to learn.
A STABLE BASE IS HOW HOUSES AND BUILDINGS ARE BUILT. Your stable base here is knowledge and understanding.
We want to absorb this knowledge and by repetition you will develop a DEEPER understanding which will start to make it easier for you to grasp this entire course and become an expert.

Don't rush, take it slow but upbeat pace. It takes 3 months or more to build a skyscrapers foundation. but then the skyscraper goes up in 1/2 that time. almost over night.

At times we are told or made fun of because someone has to "read it over again". Yes some times we have to so we can grasp it and understand it. This is a scientific fact. The problem is that the "system" has brainwashed people to think that is silly to do. And then you go around the world and see very few experts at something earning LOTS of money for what they do. -- interesting isn't it.... ;) I hope this helps newbies here! cheers!

Here's a good trick that might help. Interview yourself. In other words, you become a reporter who is asking you questions about you. So you begin writing down 7-10 questions (as a reporter) that you would ask your guest (you).
This makes it fun and easy to come up with a "story" about you.
Hope this helps,
G.

I've known about targeting a specific niche for quite some time. I have tried my hand at internet marketing before but believe my selected interest has been way too broad. I will utilize this site to narrow down into a more specific niche and see how well I can do here.
Reply

I wonder if it's not your interest that's too broad but your ideal target audience member. I can think of some things for which I would want to get a lot of info on a single site. I can also think of plenty of instances where I just want a very specific thing and don't want to get bogged down in an ocean of other stuff. So maybe the question is, what is my ideal person coming here to get in this situation (or get information about)? And let that dictate how broad or narrow you go. I don't know. I'm still figuring this out too.

So in the previous lesson we went over the SEO and added the home description and home title. On this one we're discussing keywords. But from what i understood using the right keywords will get you ranked higher. But it says that it'll get your SEO ready keywords. If so, than why not search for keywords before doing the home description for the SEO?

Also i understand that i'll be making contents revolving around the keywords that i've found thats related to my niche. Is it one blog per keyword or a whole page per content or the whole of your website?

I hope i made sense. Please let me know.

As you move forward building content, each article you write will revolve around a specific keyword. Don't worry, trust in the system. Kyle is a great teacher and won't steer you wrong. :)

You do want your main "focus" keyword to be in the post or page title, as well as in the url, if at all possible. I would suggest you use Yoast SEO for WordPress - it coaches you, as you compose your content, on exactly where and how many times to use your keywords to get the maximum ranking.
Reply
what do you mean specific key word?
Reply
ericcantu Premium
A specific keyword is one you've researched with Jaaxy or the keyword tool to be one that is low competition and high traffic. Once you find one you like you'll write content around that keyword. Follow the training and you'll understand it. Kyle explains it all step by step on exactly how to find them according to your niche.

Sorry I didn't get back to you right away. I've been dealing with other things here.

Honestly, you can do it however you wish, but the point is to get your pages and blog ranked as highly as possible. So you want to use as many key words as you can (without sounding stupid) on your blog or page as you create it. The spiders will crawl all over your text and find all the keywords. Then when people search in your niche, your website gets added to their search because of all those keywords. Not everyone will search using the same keywords. But how high your site ranks on searches depends on how well you placed keywords in the title and text. Does that help clarify it for you?

I am having an issue seeing where the pages pop up after publishing them. Is there a reason why after hitting publish then going to view my site, that I wouldn't be able to see all three (about me, private policy, and my niche page) loaded on the page? Thank you!
Reply

Hello Sean, after publishing did you go to Menus under The appearance tab? If not you need to go there, and you should see the three pages under recent pages. Tick all threeand click on add to menu. Over on the right you need to name your menu at the top, scroll down and tick what you want in settings. Go back to the top and save menu. Click your site name at the top left and a tab should drop down to visit site, click on that and you should see the changes in your site. If not refresh.

I just want to say that I have came across alot of the "link posting" "free website" build's and all kind's of scams who just want to take peoples money, but I gotta tell you so far with all I have seen and heard today, these guy's really seem legit and actually care and want to help people like me. So I would like to thank Kyle and Carson, whom I'Ve never even talked to yet,for doing what you're doing here. But unfortunately $19.00, right now to me might as well be a million. Something that helps me is to imagine a tag line a phrase that can promote both your product and your website. Let me give you an example. I'm promoting WA and it is centered around trial offers. What are those 'try before you buy' right? Well I searched for that keyword and I found an awesome domain name. The name both promotes my pages by using 'try before you buy' phrase. Hope that helps. Remember the goal is to make is memorable.
You're doing great though.

There are videos so you may want to use earphones if you have other people in the house so you don't get distracted. I do it during the day when I have time and a little at night when I also have time not organised with a certain time just depends what you are like as a person day/night person with work. Test the water and see how you are working and what time of the day you are most productive then work with that and take breaks between any training you do and write everything down you might forget or dont understand then ask questions here also :)

I had chosen (natural healing) for my niche, and then found out it was much too broad. I've now decided on (natural healing for children), and I'd just like some opinions on whether I should narrow it down even more to : ( natural healing cough, cold, and flu for children)? Or would that be too narrow?

I would take some time and do research on the potential a sub-niche has. Too narrow and you may not be able to monetize the website, too broad and you can possibly, but cannot adequately cover the niche...

Good luck!

Hi Max,
I totally understand where you are coming from! I have ADHD so I can lose focus very quickly and sometimes have a million things going on at once! So for me there are a few "steps" I put in place for myself that I call my "focus list" ;-)
1. Everyday read my focus list
2. Remember what it is I want to achieve and why
3. Focus on what is important to me (this step is what helped me determine my niche ;-) )
4. Do what I need to help me with step 3, to me that is keeping up to date with what is going on within my niche
5. Work on my businesses, which includes WA

Hope this is of some help to you :-)

Hi Jason. It sounds like you are looking for suppliers of products instead of affiliate sources. If that is true then I would recommend using what I have successfully used for selling on eBay and my soon to be ecommerce website.

I use free wholesale suppliers that will also do drop shipping. It is very important to notice that I said "free" because there are a lot of fake wholesale and drop shipping companies online. If this is what you are looking for or have more questions, let me know.
Reply
I am interested in the drop sharing myself. I could use some pointers as well. I wasnt sure if i could do that here. If you have anything at all to help, i would really appreciate it thanx.
Reply
boomergp08 Premium
You can do drop shipping here because the type of website you build is totally up to you. But instead of an affiliate website you would have to make an ecommerce website.

So rather than using affiliate links to earn money you would create something like a store page and link to it from reviews and other relevant content elsewhere on your website.

I'm a little confused & overwhelmed by a couple of things

It seems a little counterintuitive to pick a niche & build a site PRIOR to key word research....? I thought I had a good niche idea, but I feel like I have to do KEYWORD research on my niche before choosing a domain and building the website.Because if I do the research after I pick a niche, what if the QSR & traffic don't work for my niche? I'd wind up with a domain & site that I can't use, right?

Anyway, my head is going in 10 different directions now b/c I also did a google search of the niche I was thinking of and while there is low competition, and low google results for the keywords, there were several REALLY GOOD blogs on the first page of results. a couple of the posts even had interviews w/ people who were tops in the industry. How does one compete with something like that!

If I choose a niche that meets criteria, I'm concerned about HOW to write good content - I understand keyword research's importance though. After doing keyword research & seeing what other articles are out there, is a beginner's content basically like how we did book reports in grammar school?

I know I'm probably jumping the gun with those concerns, & I should just take the plunge.....but I'm a huge analyst (bad habit!)

You actually have it right... The final objective is to get traffic to your website. With 2 billion plus buyers on the internet you have a pretty free reign on picking your niche.. But your niche will only win if you have the keywords to garner traffic.

For example you niche cannot be "fishing" because is too broad and your website will probably get zero traffic or just a few.

However, Let think about Alaska and one of the best thing fisherman from around the world will want to do is know where to go, and how to catch, and bring their fish home.

So your niche might be "Fishing in the great outdoor of Alaska"
(Just as an example because maybe you don't like fish)

Well, since you went to Alaska several times and know what needs to be done... Now you have meaning content for your website.

Now for the domain name,
http://www.greatalaskinfishing.com <-- available
http://www.letsgofishingalaska.com <-- available

You are right..

1. Niche (your passion, like to do, know alot about)
2. keywords / phrases
3. domain name
4. content
5. build your site
5. verify site with google
6. google analytics
7. add affiliate links (low content may impact you getting the approval to affiliate)

One website = one niche
With a premium account you can build 50 websites for $49 a month, such a deal

And more so, I believe that any idea you desire to sell there must be a keyword that will fit it with good QSR.

Slow down Jennifer, you are overthinking the process.

Picking a niche has to come before doing keyword research otherwise you will not have a grasp of what keywords to research.

Another thing to consider is that keyword research is an ongoing process that you will be doing every time you create new content on your website.

As for your domain you can make it whatever you want. It does not have to be a keyword because Google does not rank a website based on its domain name.

It is very much possible to compete with others in your niche who appear on Google page one. But in order to do so you need to be patient and write good content that is unique and offers value.

You can have the best keyword with a QSR of zero and still not make it on page one if your content isn't well written because you are ranked on your entire content and not just the keywords.

All of this knowledge will be better understood as you work your way through the training. Writing good content takes practice. The more you do it the better you will get at it.

Do not expect to be perfect or even close to perfect when starting out. If you try to be perfect in the beginning you will fail. Building a successful website takes a lot of time and persistent content writing.

Google will not even consider you for lasting high rankings until you have at least a dozen pages/posts on your website. You need to show Google that you are an authority in your niche before they take you seriously.

All of the above will eventually come to pass after a period of a couple of months. Remember, building a profitable online business takes time. Just follow Kyle's training step by step. Do not jump ahead. This training really workday!
